  • This Moharram 'tragedy' was essentially a part of an Arab struggle for power. It would've been funny if it wasn't so tragic how Pakistanis are killing each other over it even today. Yazeed wanted to ensure that he would have no rivals to his rule. Hussain's followers wanted to see Ali's kin on the throne because they felt that their right had been stolen by Abu Bakr and Omar, in the first place, and then the Banu Ummaya (Usman, Muwaiya, Yazeed) in the second.

The death of Hussain has been transformed from an historic event to a Greek tragedy with raw Bollywood emotions thrown in just to spice things up a bit. It's a travesty.

And the greatest tragedy in the history of Islam was, in fact, the Mongol invasion that destroyed Islam's greatest cities and reduced the most advanced civilization in the world to nothing. The Islamic civilization is yet to recover from it.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

    • Us Muslims are worried too much about figures and icons from history rather than the problems we face now, we worry about who did what in histories past than following religion. If our religion is simply a fuss regarding history than it provides no answers on what to do. If Islam is a way of life, then start living it anjd God will take care of who was right on Muharram. Islam is not supposed to be a cult of personality but a way to approach and solve problems.

1.You are right. However, a greater tragedy for Islam and destruction for the Muslims began with the British manipulation in the heart of Islam and enthroning their lackeys, the House of Saud. Thereon, next was the desecration of Jerusalem by Gen Allenby followed by the desecration of Salahuddin Ayub's mousoleum by the French Ge Gouraud. This was followed by the scrapping of the last Caliphate of Islam cusing the removal of a single symbol of obeisance. The destruction and looting of Baghdad followed next blotting the Mongol destruction. Now the destruction of Aleppo is complete. Destruction of Damuscus is the next major objective.

        2. The Crusades continue. You can call this the Tenth if other ones in between are not numbered. The present and numbered Tenth Crusade is being fought without frontlines, without dimension, in no laid down time scale or even location.

        • The brutal and inhuman murder of the grandson of the Prophet of Islam may not be taken lightly. Imam Hussain was not struggling for power or trying to regain what was lost by his family but was against a cruel dictator of that time. The same Imam might had not fought this way if there were a better person than Yazeed. This was a fight between the forces of light and the forces of darkness.

My question is that how come Sunnis ignore this very important day but on the other hand Shias commemorate it with such a vigour!

I think Imam Hussain being grandson of Muhammad should be similarly remembered by both followers of the prophet Sunnis as well as Shias.

          • I disagree, I think Lewanaye Zalmaye had it right, this is a distortion and misrepresentation made by people who want to represent Islamic history in the favor of some ideological agenda.

The truth is , Hussain and Yazeed were all hungry for power; it was about who maintained control. Hussain wanted a dynastic rule which centered on Ahl Al Bayt, and Yazeed a dynastic rule that centered on Banu Ummayah.

It doesn't matter why Shi'a celebrate it or why Sunni don't; what matters is we need to grow out of this immature mentality and focus on how to solve our problems .....Neither Hussain or Yazeed are helping us or hurting us today. Leave these men in the past, focus on our future.

I also agree it was the Mongol destruction of the intellectual legacy of the Muslims for which we are suffering today.

I thought it was just me thinking that. I can't get my head around this Member.

He scolds the Quran Hijab everything to do with Islam, yet all of a sudden Muharrem is important?

              I don't get it?

              • Dr. Israr Ahmad once said:

We cannot doubt the intention of the Sahaba RA. Ameer Mo'ayva RA thought that at that time Yazeed his son was the only one who had the ability to lead Muslims and he appointed Yazeed as his successor. On the other hand Imam Hussein RA thought that this may start dictatorship within the Ummah and the Caliphate will become the property of the son after the father.

                _

So, I will go with this view on the issue I can't doubt any Sahaabi's intention. Who am I to do so? And the people who invited Imam Hussein RA there played a very confusing role. Well all this didn't need to be done. There must have been a way to solve this political problem.

                _

Moreover, the difference of opinion between Sahabaa RA don't give us the right to disgrace any group of Sahabaa RA.

                • Proposition is that the Quran is known as the last, definitive book revealed, the ahadith the final examples given how to conduct oneself in this life, and Mohammad (s) the last nabi.

I have heard it was all politics, and politics is steeped in policies and manipulations, rhetoric and lies colluding together to push the ego in search of power, so are dynasties.

The legacy is interesting; a camp of khulfat wishing allegiance through loyalty versus a camp wishing to inherit by right of blood, plus a few tiny factions here and there.

Unresolved is what happened to the original proposition. last nabi, last kitab, last sunna.

What is clear, partisan I am, sajad on a stone from Karbala, changing the azan, keeping forbidden practices such as mutah, self-flagellation, disrespecting ayesha(r) and the discrepancies in more fundamental aspects of belief are, for me, unbelievable.

                  • Once again I feel shocked to see that Sunni Muslims are not that much observing the Muharam and Ashura day/month as Shia Muslims do!

Imam Husain was the grandson of the Prophet of both Sunnis and Shias but I dont see the zeal among Sunnis to commemorate this great tragedy of the history of Islam. Only Shia remember this day, mourn and express their religious sentiments while Sunnis almost remain almost silent or lukewarm.

Once again I am compelled to ask that does it mean that Sunnis agree with what Yazid committed or their inertia on this matter has some other connotation?

Apart from the sectarian differences between Shiites and Sunnis, what is your take on the issue that Sunnis do not observe the Muharram as Shiites do while Imam Hussain is the grandson of the same prophet for both the sects.

Ali ibn Abi Taalib radiallahu anhu was a khalifah, the husband of Prophet sal allahu alayhi wasalams daughter, and also his cousin. He was murdered, yet filthy rafidhis don't mourn.

But when his son is murdered suddenly we all have to mourn?

May I remind you that it was the Shi'ites themselves who murdered Husain Ibn Ali radiallahu anhu.

You can go and administer hadd punishment on yourself like your fellow kafir shiites for slandering Sahaba on Ashura. Be my guest.

Do you mean that this whole history of animosity of Yazeed and Hussian and the battle of Karbala between the two opponent forces is totally false.

You are giving advantage to Yazeed being Sunni! But can you share please what to do you think about the personality of Yazeed?

I am really astonished that millions of Shiites mourn this day with full zeal and zest but Sunnis are totally silent and instead observe it as Ashura day and totally ignore the Karbala event.
