This class/caste stuff seems like strong Indo-Pak influence. I guess perhaps it exists to a certain degree in Afghanistan too; like Mashar and sons of the Mashar in a village gets a lot of respect. Kuchi Mashran get lot of reverence. Other than that I don't see much of it with Afghan Pakhtuns. We're somewhat more egalitarian.

We're from a subclan of Hotaks known as Sakzai, but sometimes we're called "Sahak" , my Family use the name "Sahak" more than Sakzai, but it's the same.

The name Hotak having a lot of repute; get's us a lot of respect on account of certain historical events, but we're not from that branch of Hotakan.

Malakand division has primarily Yousafzai Pashtuns and then some others like Salarzai I believe and Tarkanr Pashtuns. The others are not castes per say but other communities that are not considered Pashtuns. Like Ddam, jolaa, etc. In those areas the khans and landowners are Pashtuns and everyone else isn't. I am not sure about indo-pak influence.

Yousafzais are originally from Kandahar and Kabul (I believe). We then moved eastwards and northwards to areas in Malakand division, Mardan, Swabaii, other areas of Afghanistan, Thor ghar, etc. We are split into two sub-sections -Mandanr and Yousaf. The uncle of Babur killed many Yousafzai elders in Kabul and all but one was left alive, who led the migration to other parts of Pashtunkhwa. Again this is a rough bit of information. Toranama knows a lot more than me.

That many of them stick within their own circles even in the West is true for many, many of them here where I live as well. It can be so pathetic that they'll even refuse to attend the wedding of a Pukhtun family who belongs to a "lower" caste than they! I've seen this happening, and it was such a shame because one would hope and expect and think that since there aren't many Pukhtuns here, they'd support each other by sharing each other's happiness and miseries. But clearly, the happiness of someone who belongs to a lower caste than you isn't "true" happiness and doesn't need to be shared by the upper caste. It disgusts me. Or then they might be good for interacting, since there aren't enough of them here for us to pick and choose which ones to interact with, but they're certainly not worthy of having our daughters marry into them! Like, what the hell?

But I've heard that during the recent Taliban era in Swat, this division didn't exist, and everyone cooperated with each other regardless of their caste. If you needed bread and your neighbor needed tomatoes, you didn't look at their caste; you simply looked at their needs and yours, and traded. I'm not sure if this cooperated managed to last long after conditions improved a wee bit.

I attended it, but stopped going. The links in my sig are of my cousin. I work with him in setting up his blog, work on YouTube videos. He's a writer/Publisher/ and to an extent so am I.

What's up with Stony Brook? It's a lovely campus, we still go and work in their library.

                              the yousufzai area

                              roshina khor and other members,

I welcome members for the interest in pashtun tribes.
It is important for us to know our origin and tribe.

The vast majority of yousuzais are living in swabi, mardan distt and they are mandarn yousufzai.
In swat the yousufzais are in good numbers but stil there is strong minority of non yousufzais. The kalam area of swat is majority kohistanis and they are not yousufzais.Few Safi famlies are also there. There are many ,,gujars,,in swat followed by parachas and other ,,kasabgar type of people such as tarkan, nayee, dum etc.Thats the reason many non yousufzais do,nt know their tribes there.
Malakand distt is divided in tow parts the upper malakand (batkhela, thana, totakan etc) is known as ,,swat ranezai,,This part of malakand is part of swat region. Many of the people in Swat ranezai are belong to the yousufzai sub-tribe of ranezai. In swat ranezai you will also find non yousufzais such as parachas, malezais, bajoris, gujars, kasabgars etc.
The people of lower malakand Teh Dargai (also known as a ,,sama ranezai,,) are belong to the ,,shalmani, ranezai, khatak,,pashtun tribes.
The town of ,,sakhaakot,,and sarounding are belong to the ,,shalmani,,pashtun tribe. Many of the Teh Dargai people are also belong to the the Ranezai sub-tribe of yousufzai.Khataks and Uthmankhel are also in good number.
                              The yousufzais of Bunir
They are majority in Bunir followed by gujars etc.
                              Shangla distt
Many of them are yousufzasi with a small minority of gujars.

                              dir distt
                              malezais ,kohistani,gujars(malezais majority)

                              The yousufzai of Tor Ghar

Tor Ghar or kala dhaka is new distt of pashtunkhwa bordering bunir, mansehra, batagram and swat.It was a trible area with no govt influence but now it is declared as a distt. The hasanzais, madakhels, nasrat khel, akazais are living in Tor Ghar(100% yousufzais majority). The yousufzais of Tor Ghar are the brave people and good looking.Their women still wear the afghani style of ,,khatt partog,,very geratmand and the most hospitable people among yousuzais.

                              The yousufzais of Thakot
Thakot town and few villages around in Batagram distt are also yousufzais. However most people of Batagram are swati pashtuns not yousufzais.

Minority yousufzasi are also living in haripore, charsada, ogy area etc.

In afghanistan yousufzais are in turkistan region, jalal abad, kunduz and some in kandaar.

There are salarzais in Buner as well. At least I am pretty sure so.
Rohsina, the thing is that if they are considered gujjar, ddam, etc they are not considered Pashtuns. So I don't remember anyone calling them a lower caste of pashtuns, just not Pashtuns period.
