Step 6: Stay Away from Negative Influences

Today's teenagers learn from adult behavior and the media. They face peer pressure.
Peer pressure is not just limited to teenagers, it is also prevalent in adults.

It shows a lack of self-esteem when people do not have the courage to say "No, thank you," and stay away from negative influences: What are the negative influences?

Attitude is contagious whther positive or negative....we tend to get influenced fast by what is around us......get influenced by something positive, great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

getting influenced by negative attitude due to peer pressure........ we most often give in to negative attitude and accept to follow what they follow....reason???? for the fear of rejection....what if i wont be accepted when i disagree to them????

rather we take a stand and be firm about what we want....we just cant flow as people want us to......take a stand.....dont accept negativity...... spread your positivity to negative people rather accepting their negative attitude........

          1. Negative People

An eagle's egg was placed in the nest of a prairie chicken. The egg hatched and the little
eagle grew up thinking it was a prairie chicken. The eagle did what the prairie chickens
did. It scratched in the dirt for seeds. It clucked and cackled. It never flew more than a
few feet because that is what the prairie chickens did.

One day he saw an eagle flying gracefully and majestically in the open sky. He asked the prairie chickens: "What is that beautiful bird?" The chickens replied, "That is an eagle. He is an outstanding bird, but
you cannot fly like him because you are just a prairie chicken."

So the eagle never gave it a second thought, believing that to be the truth. He lived the life of and died a prairie chicken, depriving himself of his heritage because of his lack of vision. What a waste! He
was born to win, but was conditioned to lose.

            Spogmai khore,
wai, khar dha kheed pa khurak sa pooheegee.

what you are saying requires a certain peace of mind, that our troubled and traumatized folk cannot comprehend. Forget positive thinking, they cant even think, positive or negative. Their thinking pattern shifts from one frame to another based on the pain or satisfaction a short present moment provides, the same way an animal moves around in its ecosystem.

Positive thinking requires a presence of a longer horizon in one's head. With imagination, insight and in the presence of role models of such success. Such models in a society afflicted with post traumatic stress disorder with active flashbacks cosntantly flared up by mullah and society, is hardly possible.

Baygham....we need to start sometime...somewhere...with some hope.....

and it depends how u define success...may not always be only in Professional life....every aspect of ur life whther professional or personal.....no matter how big and small...requires us to be positive....

coming out from a truma also need positivity.....also its hardly possible as u said..which means the battle isnt lost... there is still some possibility.... a faint light of hope at the end of the dark tunnelll....

dont you feel our young members here who are our future would do wonders with instilled positivity in them?????

there are tremendous advances in the field. Just us talking on a pashtoon forum about it is a miracle. Positivity needs some prerequisites, some are born with such patterns and some develop them randomly and they do well. Others, the majority, need some quidance - I agree.

To me treatment of cultural PTSD is essential in those cases. Just showing the possibility of such, is enough for some, others have to be walked through, some will never change.

Another problem is what constitutes positive. This can be culturally modified and peaple exploited that way. Like religious fervor. To some it is very positive to spend 5 years and memorise the Quran. Others can be coaxed by painting a positive aura around certian sect etc. Without a stable, humanistic surrounding, the exploitation of msiguided positive thinking is just as much as no thinking.

i absolutely agree to whatu said Baygham........

Prerequisites of Positivity.....some are born with this quality....i dont agree muchto this.....morover it depends on our environment, surrounding, attitude of people around us and people who have reared us.....growing in an atmosphere full of negativity cant make one positive.....but positivity can be developed as we move in a large circle, beyond family......

what constitutes positive....i completely agree to this point of yours.....i cant tell u much about cultural modification or religious fervor.........

but yes...what i am talking abouthere is away from these two....my statements are always generalized....

and we can guide, inspire people........they have to motivate themselves to bring the change in their attitude and hence their whole life......

My target group are the members here in PF...who definitely have a Humistic and stable surrounding hence sound thinking tooooo.......

Baygham....its so nice to have u here and to have this discussion toooo.....please contribute more with a lot of positivity......

Dear Jasmine ...i consider it as my duty.....

If you want to soar like an eagle, you have to learn the ways of an eagle. If you associate with achievers, you will become one.

If you associate with thinkers, you will become one.

If you associate with givers, you will become one. If you associate with complainers, you will become one.

Whenever people succeed in life, petty people will take cracks at them and try to pull
them down. When you refuse to fight petty people, you win.

In martial arts, they teach that when someone takes a crack at you, instead of blocking you should step away. Why? Even to block you require energy. Why not use it more productively?

Similarly, in order to fight petty people, you have to come down to their level. This is what they want, because now you are one of them.

Don't let negative people drag you down.

Remember, a person's character is not only judged by the company he or she keeps but also by the company he or she avoids.

Also over a period We Resemble the ones whom we Assemble with....

A friend of mine is into this. She insists that I attend the avatar course and read these authors, I have been successful to date in staying away. The message however is very benign and similar to what you are saying, the skills developed in the course are good for controlling and mastering beliefs and emotions.

i am just helping myself and people here to realize their potential and work towards them....in order to be successful... i dont refer in context to any religion or culture......

                              • 2. Smoking, Drugs and Alcohol

One reason that I don't drink is that I want to know when I am having a good time.
                                --Lady Astor

Drinking makes a person lose his inhibitions and give exhibitions.

In some countries drinking has become a national pastime. If you don't drink, they look at you as if there is something wrong.

                                Their motto is:
"It doesn't matter how bad your English is, as long as your Scotch is good."

If a banker asked them what their liquid assets are, they would bring two bottles of Scotch.

Drinking and smoking are glamorized today. It all starts with the first time. If you ask people why they consume alcohol or take drugs, they will give you a host of reasons, such as: to celebrate; to have fun; to forget problems; to relax; to experiment; to impress (it is cool to drink); to be fashionable; to mingle; for business purposes.

People want to conform to peer pressure. I am amazed at the way peer pressure compels with phrases such as: "Aren't you my friend?"; "One for the road"; "One for my health."

The following poem from an unknown author explains the dilemma of a social drinker well

                                I've drunk to your
                                Health in taverns,

                                I've drunk to your
                                Health in my home,

                                I've drunk to your
                                Health so damn
                                many times,
                                That I've almost
                                ruined my own!
