    SHARPEN YOUR AXE

Jo John, a woodcutter, worked for a company for five years but never got a raise. The
company hired Bill and within a year he got a raise.

This caused resentment in John and he went to his boss to talk about it. The boss said, "You are still cutting the same number of trees you were cutting five years ago.

We are a result-oriented company and would be happy to give you a raise if your productivity goes up." John went back, started hitting harder and putting in longer hours but he still wasn't able to cut more trees.

    He went back
to his boss and told him his dilemma. The boss told John to go talk to Bill. "Maybe there is something Bill knows that you and l don't."

John asked Bill how he managed to cut more trees. Bill answered, "After every tree l cut, l take a break for two minutes and sharpen my axe. When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" This question hit him like a bullet and John got his answer.

hence the question is here , when was the last time you sharpened your axe?

Past glory and education don't do it. We have to continuously sharpen the axe.

What do you mean by SHARPEN YOUR AXE.....

We have to keep on upgrading ourselves in terms of qualification....as we can never call ourselves completely learned individuals.... if we call ourselves completely learned or perfect no matter how much ever knowledge we have regarding all the matters or subjects in the world it means that we are perfect and anything that is perfect has no further scope for development.....

and if there is no scope for development then we remain stagnant....and we cant remain stagnant for long...either we go up the ladder or go down....

there should be hunger for knowledge...which very few have....

Past glory and education don't do it......

no matter whatever or however great our achievements in the past... the world too expects more from us....we cant be just happy and content with what we achieved in the past....

over a period we will be forgotten for what we achieved... and others will overtake us...so keep sharpening your axe....keep up with the pace of advancement....

Anyone familiar with Edward De Bono? He's got some really good books on positive thinking, thinking in general, success, creativity, etc. A list of his books can be found here.

          Manana Qrratugai....

Afganlady manana to you toooo.....you can contribute here about what you think and experiences in your life as well...

Aseer Jaan... positivity is a state of mind......your success is in your hands and nobody elses...rather i would say in your mind, in your thoughts and once you have it in your thoughts nobody, not even you can stop it from coming in to your life....

just telling your self one thing that "i can do it" will really make you do whatever you want to in this world...belive in yourself that you can do it..of course within the limits of your present capabalities and limitations....does this sound negative????? not to me .... its sounds like a wise statement... as i said present limitation which may not be your limitation in future....you can always work on it and make it ur capability....

but presently i can be confident and positive about the virtues i have.....

some have a lot of capabilities which we are not aware of or even if we aware, we are not confident about them.....

Aseer Jaan....if you think you can do it... you have done it and if you thinkyou cant...you will never....

its just the matter of can and cant....

            Feed Your Mind

Just like our bodies need good food every day, our minds need good thoughts every day.
The key words in the preceding sentence are good food and good thoughts.

If we feed our body with junk food and our mind with bad thoughts, we will have both a sick body
            and mind.

We need to feed our mind with the pure and the positive to stay on track.

Through constant practice and exposure, we can learn the principles that make a person
successful just like we learn to play basketball or any other sport....

              Knowledge is Power

We hear every day that knowledge is power. Not really. Knowledge is information. It is
potential power and it becomes power only when it is acted upon.

What is the difference between a person who cannot read and a person who can but
does not read? Not a whole lot.

Learning is like eating food. It is not how much you eat that matters, what counts is how
              much you digest.

Knowledge is potential power, wisdom is real power.
Education takes many forms, it is not just grades and a degree. It is

              - cultivating your strength
              - learning self-discipline

              - listening
              - desiring to learn

Our minds, like muscles, stretch or shrink depending on how much or how little we

              exercise them.

If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.
              --Derek Bok

Continuous positive education leads to positive thinking.

                  True to the core......

i write here only things which i not only agree too but also things that i have practiced whatever i read and also beacuse they have brought a lot of positive change in my attitude towards a lot of aspects in my life whether big or small...my view towards people and thingshave changed.... i have learned and realised that positive attitude makes a lot of difference...and i dont preach what i dont practice at all...

Osho.. if u have read all thepost right from post one.. youmust haverealised that there no great preachings going in any of the post... its just things of our day to day life which we know but fail to realise.....

its only helping people to realise...and hence a bring a chnage in their attitude...right from learning to being content....or accepting your limitations or broad based education....as many feel that we have to be the masters of everything in this world and in doing so we lose the specialization of our field....or whether you talk about the upgrading your qualification or commmon sense, etc..

i havent read bundles of books on this topic but quite a few.... a lot of books like THE MONK WHO SOLD HIS FERRARI, FAMILY WISDOM by Robin Sharma... which according to me talks too much abt wisdom....which is very hard for me to digest and all that he has been mentioned in his books seems very difficult to follow (not impossible though)....

also books by Paulo Coehlo..like THE ALCHEMIST....good to read... hard to follow...DARE TO WIN... the author of this book i dont remember right now....

we might personally not agree to a lot of things in these book...

and true that these are hard to practice but sounds good in theory.......as its said "God has promised success, but not easy pathway to success"...so if we wish to succeed we need to think out of the box, be different....as winners dont do different things but they do things differently......if one wishes to succeed then follow the path if one doesnt leave it...

i talk about these things to my students too... as a part of HRM.....basic thing that is required is to improve the Human Resource which would lead to the success of any organization and hence a nation as a whole...full exploitation of the human resource at hand...exploitation here i mean making themaximum of it which is possible only when right human resource would be used at the right place...
and whther you believe or not i have many of my students coming back and giving me feedback about the change that come in their attitude and their thinking...

also all the post are not from the book ... many are my personal viewpoints too...

                    Education is a Reservoir

Positive thinkers are like athletes who, through practice, build an inner reservoir of stamina that they draw on in competition. If they don't practice, they have nothing to draw on.

Similarly, positive thinkers regularly build a reserve of positive attitude by constantly feeding their mind on the pure, the powerful and the positive on a daily basis.

They realize that we are all going to be faced with the negative and if we have the reserve of positive attitude we will be able to overcome; otherwise the negative will prevail.

Positive thinkers are not fools and they are not going through life with blinders. They are winners who recognize their limitations, but focus on their strengths.

Losers, on the other hand, recognize their strengths but focus on their weaknesses.

Man is full weakness....there is no person on earth without any weakness...inspite of these weaknessess there are leaders and winners.......how do they win or how do they succeed?

we think too much and always about the wrong things.....we think and talk a lot about things that we cannot do... rather than things that we can do....

If we really focus on our strengths we master in them.....we are full of weakness we have strengths too......let us be master sof few rather than being jack of all (As mentioned in previous posts too)

our weakness can be filled by somebody else who has our wekaness as their strength and vice versa....so we complement each other..this is how work is done in any workplace... all cantbe good at everything... so the strengths of all is combined to be successfullll

for instance..if i am good at writing speeches but i dont have communication or Public speaking skills at all.....but you on the other hand are poor at writing but excellent in effective communication......we will be undoubtedly successful......combination of our strengths....

we have to understand and accept our weaknessess too...if i try to deliver that excellent speech written by me (with my poor communication skill) then i can create blunders becuase i havent accepted my weakness and other's strength....

accepting our weaknessess is very important as much as realizing our strengths.....

                        Step 5: Build a Positive Self-Esteem

                        What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is the way we feel about ourselves. When we feel good within, our
performance goes up, our relationships improve both at home and at work. The world
looks nicer. What is the reason? There is a direct correlation between feeling and
                        behaviour.

when do we feel good from within????? when do something good for ourself and for others.... especially i feel when they never find out that we have done it for them....

How Do We Build Positive Self-Esteem?

If you want to build positive self-esteem quickly, one of the fastest ways is to do
something for others who cannot repay you in cash or kind.

                          Shlombay, lie?????????

depends on our values or moral principles.....

we wil rise very high with lie and we will also come down at a faster pace than with what what had risen....

lie has many faces......to hide a lie, we say one more lie, to hide that, one more and on and on we go... in the the longer run we tend to forget where, when and what we had lied about and end up embarrasing ourselves.....a lie wont be hidden for long...it will reveal itself somewhere in future and at a time when you will want to hide it the most.....so why do we lie in the first place and create so many complications for ourselves?????

Truth on the other hand remains the same forever......we wont forget it ever and we will not have to make up stories which we would otherwise make if we lie....

No matter whther one lie or many lies.. whether once or always wil definitely make us successfull but we wont remain that way for long....

and also if we have lied and the deserving person doesnt get what he/she desrerves and we (who dont deserve) get what we dont deserve....our conscious wont let us live in peace (if we have one).....this guilt will eat us up from inside and we will find it very difficult to confront too..

then its left to us to decide what do we want... an easy success with future embarrasment and guilt or a slow pathway to success with no guilt and embarrasment.....

its better to be at a lower level with dignity but absolutely bad to be at a higher level with embarrasment......

A few years ago l started volunteering my time to teach attitude and self-esteem programs to jail inmates. In just a few weeks, I learned more than l had learned in years .

After attending my program for two weeks ;one of the inmates stopped me and said, " l want to talk to you. I'm going to be released from prison in a couple of weeks."
l asked him what he learned through the attitude development program. He thought for a while and then said that he felt good about himself. l said, "Good doesn't tell me anything. Tell me specifically what behavior has changed?"

l believe that learning has not taken place unless behavior changes. He told me he read his Bible every day since l started the program. l then asked him what reading the Bible did to him.

He replied that he felt comfortable with himself and others which he hadn't felt before. l said, "That is nice, but the bottom line is, what are you going to do when you leave jail?"

He told me he was going to try to be a contributing member of society. Then l asked him the same question again and he gave me the same answer.

For the third time l asked him the same question What are you going to do when you leave jail?" Obviously, l was looking for a different answer. At this point, in an angry tone, he said, l am going to be a contributing
                            member of society."

l pointed out to him that there was a world of difference in what he
said then and what he said now.

Earlier he had said, l am going to try to be" and now he said "I am going to be." The difference is the word "try." He got rid of the word trying and
                            that made sense.

Either we do it or we don't. The word "trying" keeps the door open for
him to come back to jail.

Another inmate, who was listening in on our conversation, asked, "what do you get paid to do all this?" l told him that the feeling that l just experienced was worth more than all the money in the world.

He then asked, "Why do you come here?" l said, l come here
for my own selfish reason, and my selfish reason is that l want to make this world a better place to live." This kind of selfishness is healthy.

In a nutshell, what you put into the system, you always get back, and most times more than you can ever put in. But you don't put it in with the desire to get something back.

Another inmate said, "What anybody does is their business. When people take drugs, it is none of your business. Why don't you leave them alone?"

l replied, "My friend, even though l disapprove, l will compromise and accept what you are saying that it is none of my business. If you can guarantee that when someone takes drugs, and when they get behind the wheel of a car and have an accident, the only thing they will ever hit is a tree, l
will compromise. But if you cannot guarantee that when they take drugs and have an accident, then you or your kids or l or my kids could be dead under the wheels, you better believe it is my business. l have to get this person off the road."

This one phrase, "It is my life, I will do what I want," has done more damage than good.

People choose to ignore the spirit and derive the meaning that is convenient to them.
Such people have tied this phrase to selfishness and I'm sure that was not the intent.
These people forget that we don't live in isolation.

What you do affects me and what I do affects you. We are connected. We have to realize that we are sharing this planet and we must learn to behave responsibly.

There are two kinds of people in this world--takers and givers.

Takers eat well and givers sleep well.

Givers have high self-esteem, a positive attitude, and they serve society. By
serving society, It does not mean a run-of-the-mill pseudo leader-turned-politician who serves himself by pretending to serve others.

As human beings, we all have the need to receive and take. But a healthy personality with high self-esteem is one that not only has its need to take but also to give.

A man was washing his new car when his neighbor asked him, "When did you get the car?" He replied "My brother gave it to me." The neighbor's response was, "I wish l had a car like that." The man replied, "You should wish to have a brother like that." The neighbor's wife was listening to the conversation and she interrupted, "I wish I was a brother like that."

                                What a way to go.....
