Who said norms were determined by age rather than other indicators of sexual maturity?
"Ayesha (ra) said: I was a young girl, when verse 46 of Surah Al-Qamar, [the 54th chapter of the Qur'an], was revealed. (Sahih Bukhari, kitabu'l-tafsir, Arabic, Bab Qaulihi Bal al-sa`atu Maw`iduhum wa'l-sa`atu adha' wa amarr)
The 54th surah of the Qur'an was revealed nine years before Hijrah. According to this, Ayesha had not only been born before the revelation of the referred surah, but was actually a young girl, not an infant at that time. This would make her much older than 9 at marriage and she was married on 2 AH.

Also there was the battle of Badr and Uhud where it is also reported in hadith and history that no one under the age of 15 years was allowed to take part in the battle of Uhud. Ayesha's participation in the battle of Badr and Uhud indicates that she was older than 9 when she married and the battle of Badr was 2 AH and the battle of Uhud was fought in 3 AH.

No one is claiming that norms were determined by age, my point was if she was not of age then why did none of his critics question this marriage.

    • Lot of that seems to be interpolatiion and ambiguity. Also revelations were not all done Surah by Surah but often verse by verse then affixed to their suwar as they were recited.Where does it actually say she was older?

And if you agree age itself wasn't the deciding factor then it shouldn't matter if she was 9 or 99.

I am quoting the Hadith exactly. There is nothing ambiguous about it. It says she was older because math does not lie. Just do the math.

Are you disagreeing with the Hadith?

This is Arrogance at its best. These people are complete jahils. They have no logic.
Challenging Prophet's pbuh marriage when he was alive is another thing, these staunch enemies could not challenge a single verse of the holy Quran in the last 1500 years. Holy Quran is a living miracle. not a single verse of the holy quran can be proved wrong. But these deaf, dumb and blind atheists will never understand unless Allah wants them to.

The ambiguous part is how it is associated with her age. More details in this please. Also consider thus does not in anyway conflict with my post. I do feel certain leaps are being made but if the time line is accurate that might be valid.

Addendum: I just did some background reading Aisha was married in Makkah to Prophet Muhammad(saw) but the revelation of Al-Qamar is said to have been 5 years not 9 years before Hijrah, so this would actually coincide with the Hadith that she was 9 years at the consummation of her marriage.

            Period of Revelation

The incident of the shaqq-al-Qamar (splitting of the moon) that has been mentioned in it, determines its period of revelation precisely. The traditionists and commentators are agreed that this incident took place at Mina in Makkah about five years before the Holy Prophet's hijrah to Madinah.
I hate to quote Mawdudi, but this is the only online resource I can find that affirms this

            • I don't why you people are trying to debunk Aisha's actual age.
It's commonly accepted by Islamic scholars that she was 6 years old at the time of marriage and she was 9 years old when she was deflowered.

You people must know more than Islamic scholars & historians.

The Nikkah took place in Makkah but the consummation took place in Madinah. M.M. Khatib puts Al-Qamar at 8-9 years before Hijrah.

I'll concur to your position on this though.

Either way, Hijrah was about 622 so if consummation happened in Madinah. It still puts her at 9. But.ok since we concur on this now. I guess that's that.

Since they were not the norm, then why did none of the prophets critics(and there were many) criticize this marriage?
But the hadiths that say she is older are they authentic?

Do you have a problem with a 55 year old man sleeping with a 9 year old?

                      This is a sophistic question.

Let's be honest. If we are discussing this, it is because we do have a problem with it.
Muhammad did a lot questionable things.

No we're discussing this because we're projecting a problem onto it. And it's more because OTHER's have projected a problem on to it

Whether Muhammad did questionable things is up for debate. But from a vantage point of Anthropology, there was nothing questionable about what he did outside of people's cultural sensitivities.

Muhammad married his son's wife after he saw her half naked. Marrying a son's wife was taboo at the time.
Luckily Muhammad revealed a surah permitting it.
Muhammad does what he wants with the will of "God"

This is all interpolation that's been spin doctored to be depicted that way. If you read the actual background information it's doesn't have the same depiction of the events.

NOT EVEN Secular Western Hisorians like Albert Harouni or Sir John Glubb explain those events that way, so I'm not just pushing a sanitized doctrinal version.

Even the wikipedia link highlights this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaynab_bint_Jahsh

In your mind, Muhammad can't do no wrong. As a consequence, you will continue to sugarcoat Muhammad actions.

                                Here is another one,

Muhammad marries 11 wives, he then receives a message from "God" that decrees the maximum number of wives is 4.
