The situation of the use of Pashto language is really deplorable in Pashto speaking areas of Pakistan. In both Khyber Pashtunkhwah and Balochistan Pashto writing and reading is almost extinct. Only you hear Pashtuns speaking Pashto.

In schools only one subject is Pashto but Pashto is not the medium of instruction even not in Bacha Khan Schools. I could not find Pashto even in the syllabus of Bacha Khan schools system run by ANP. I visited the Pashto department in Peshawar university, Pashto Academy, Jahanzeb college swat, Mardan college and they are doing better in literature but Pashto language and linguistics are completely ignored. Emphasis is on poetry and even not on prose in writing.

I did not find a single good Pashto newspaper of international standard neither in Pakistan nor in Afghanistan.

I met a great Pashto scholar Parvez Shaheen who is really an inspiring personality and has complete knowledge of Pashto language, history and is also a Buddhism expert. He written a lot of books but unfortunately no body reads Pashto books in Pakistan.

In Afghanistan especially in Pashtun parts the situation is better. Although Pashto is second to Dari in importance and prestige but in Pashtun areas still Pashto is the medium of instruction and official language. I could not attend any parliament session in Afghansitan so far but on media the dominant language is Dari and not Pashto. On mobile telephone networks you hear messages mainly in Dari.

Realistically speaking the only hope for Pashto as a langauge is Afghansitan.

                major props^^

How are you able to cross the Zero line so frequently? One day, your having conversations with the Taliban in Afghanistan, and then another day, you are speaking with KP politicians. Maybe you should run for a position?

Which provinces of Afghanistan did you visit?

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I had to rush back because of some urgencies related to my job and studies. I am planning to go back soon to have a thorough study of the Pashtun affairs in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Here I shall continue sharing my first hand experiences with friends which are not necessarily in chronological order.

In Kabul I had the luck to meet Ashraf Ghani one of my ideal Afghan Pashtun personality, the man who is PhD and with 5 Master degrees and who was candidate for UN Secretary General and Afghan presidency.A great man with great vision. He is now a days head of the Transition process. When I paid my appreciation , he responded in pure Pashto that he is just a Kochey(nomad). He told me that the greatest happiness in the world is to serve his land. His ideas on the themes like development, democracy, education and transition of Afghanistan into a strong sovereign state were highly inspiring. I learnt a lot in my brief meeting with him. Somewhere I shall be writing an article on my such meetings with great personalities in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Beside many other important Afghan personalities I also met Javed Ludin , the deputy Afghan Foreign Minister and found him a young energetic dynamic and knowledgable Afghan leader. He can be a model for young Afghan politicians and government officers.

My favorite path to enter Afghanistan and especially Kunarh is the Nawapass dara in Bajaurh. There I had some nights and saw with my own eyes how the two families are divided between the two countries. I saw one brother living in Pakistan while the other living in Afghanistan. Still they have frequent contacts and many Pashtuns are unaware of the existence of any border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Afghan Pashtuns usually attend the jergas in Pakistan and the same is true for Pakistani Pashtuns.

I learnt a totally new thing about the institution of Jergas. The equality and egalitarian aspect of this institution of Pashtunwali. Every Pashtun can knock the door of the elders of the Jerga and every Pashtun is equal in the eyes of the jerga whether he or she is poor or rich , makes no difference. People dont have to pay the huge fee of lawyers and dont have to go and bribe police and judges.Almost all the disputes and issues are decided amicably. On the Pakistani side however the office of political agent the levy forces make this process cumbersome and expensive. Some elders are also corrupt and women have no representation the the main body of jergas.

During my visit to Afghanistan I mainly stayed in Kunarh and briefly visited Kabul and Jalalabad,In Pakistan I visited Peshawar, Dir, Swat, Kohat, Mardan and few other areas.I am planning to have a complete tour of all Pashtun areas to have first hand experience and observation of Pashtun affairs.

During receptions I met some US Army officers, diplomats and FBI officials and I suggested them the following to which they agreed.

                          1. America is fighting a just war in Afghanistan. They have the support of the Afghan people, parliament, government, judiciary, civil society and the whole world including Russia, China and European Union. Thus they should feel confident and carry the war to its logical conclusion which is the complete elimination of Alqaida, Taliban and all violent extremists. Their style and expression should not be apologetic. Now after so many sacrifices they should not retreat. Otherwise the world will not be a safe place and they will be responsible for this. This is in the benefit of Afghanistan too otherwise history will be repeated and Afghanistan will be worse as we saw in the case of the withdrawal of former USSR.

2.America should concentrate on public diplomacy. They should convince the people that they are not occupiers like Alexander the Great or British or others.they are just helpers of Afghans and will be liberating them from the scourge of violent extremism. If Afghanistan is free from this evil then the whole world will be free including the US. People confuse them with the occupiers and conquerers of the past. People should know that both Afghans and US have the same enemy. America should use both print and electronic media. Religious extremists have a strong propaganda mechanism and USA should counteract that. America with the help of Afghan government should train and prepare Imams of mosques to talk in favor of the liberating forces.Main problem is in Pashtun areas so good quality Pashto newspapers may be issued and circulated in Pashtun areas free of cost or on nominal prices.

                          3. People should know that USA is spending huge amount of money on the development and uplift programs both in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is very strange that in spite of such huge spending USA is not having that good image as it should be. People enjoy their aid but still hate USA.

                          4. America should support TV channels like Khyber and Shamshad by giving them ads and can have their own publicity and discussions which can be used in favor of what USA is doing in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I have observed that these channels are now being occupied by religious elements.

5.Such favorable propaganda in favor of America will create such an environment that the people will be themselves fighting against the Taliban and violent extremists and they will have no place to hide or to live. This way they will be completely wiped out. The same technique was used by Pakistani forces in places like Swat and now you will not find a single terrorist in that area.

6.America should sponsor a network of schools and hospitals on sustainable bases. This network should have a proper name and may be coordinated with the Ministries of Education and Health. USA should establish good universities in all important cities in the form of joint ventures with government and private sector. Along with spending on bullets , we should also spend on books.Taliban have support only in poor and uneducated masses and the more they have education and health facilities the modern and developed they will feel and the less they will support the wild extremists.

7.America should extend its support in industrialization of Pashtun areas in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.I did not see a single big industry or factory in the Pashtun areas of both Afghanistan and Pakistan.More industrial and commercial activities will make the Pashtuns busy in constructive activities and they will have no time for terrorism and violent religious extremism.

8.Roads construction is going on in Afghanistan but it needs to be extended to the rural areas. Motorways, high ways and expressways may be constructed as we see in Pakistan. Pakistan has done tremendous progress in the past few years in this sector.Thats why extremism is only restricted now only to the mountainous or tribal areas or southern Punjab with weak communication networks.
