  • I am visiting Afghanistan and Pakistan

After many years I am these days visiting Afghanistan and Pakistan. Its a wonderful and sometimes flabbergasting experience. I started my tour from Kunarh, the center of N2KL reg and visited few places like Asadabad, Manogai and Dangam. I first went to Bajaur Agency in Pakistan from Temergara to Munda and then by Nawa-pass Road I reached in four hours to Asadabad.

Second time I went to Khaskunarh from Samarbagh to Shahi, Binshahi, all very beautiful and enchanting places. I also briefly visited Jalalabad and Kabul as well as Peshawar and Islamabad. I will repeat my visits to all these places.

I will be sharing my experiences and observations during my tour(if I have internet) and friends share their own experiences and may ask questions or can have their comments.
Following are the few salient and striking observations.

    1. Pashto writing and reading is completely dead in Pakistan. You wont see a single Pashto sign board in the whole so called Pashtunkhwah.
    2. Pashto numbers are considered a shame in Pashtun areas in Pakistan. Every Pashtun is counting in Urdu numbers.
    3. Even in remote villages like Maskinai, Samarbagh, Mayar, Temergara, Chakdara. Takhtbhai, Shahi , you will see all writing only and only in Urdu. Not a single word is written in Pashto.
    4. Pashto is written in Kunarh and Jalalabad. I love to see sign boards in Pashto.
    5. Kunarh is a scene of perfect natural beauty but also a disaster because of the war on terror.
    6. Kunarh is the home of Taliban but very interestingly also the home of staunch Pashtun nationalists and secular people.
    7. I love the lush green valleys full of pine trees and running transparent water but deforestation is going on without any mercy and this may become an environmental catastrophe.
    8. Because of Taliban , Pashtun culture and music is almost wiped out. In villages you wont see the traditional musical evenings instead people get together and have political discussions.
    9. I attended few marriages but all marriages are like mourning events. No music, no dance, no jubilation,,just few people come together and take the bride and have some food for the guests. This is all because of Taliban who ask for austerity and try to kill any happy moment.
    10. Poverty is rampant. People dont have basic amenities. Economic and commercial activities are very slow.Roads construction is going on and I listened that government in Kunarh is starting few mega developmental projects.

Rural pashtuns on both sides speak very good pashto and are exactly the same. Its usually the cities which have been influenced.
Its funny how urban Pashtuns, are influenced by Dari numbers in Afghanistan, as well as Urdu in Pakistan.

I never heard the case of a Parsiwaan, count Pashto numbers because of "Bad habit" or Pakistani count Pashto numbers because of "bad habit"

Thats because historically pashto has been used as a local language rather than national language in both countries. most non pashtuns don't even know one sentence in pashto. Thats because most pashtuns are billingual so non pashtuns have never needed to learn pashto.
Don't you think its time to develop our own nation? I mean 50 million Pashtun, and not a real nation? With Pashto as the national language, should be in process. That's if Pashtuns care about their own survival.

Osho your description of people of Kunar is utter non sense and through the glasses of an "interventionalist"(someone who justifies killing of little children in Kunar).

                  Osho,
                  Are the children attending school?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

You constantly wanna prove that all KP pashtoons (at least majority) are sell out pashtoons, have completely sold out their identity and ghairath to panjabis there, prefer living under pakistan's sold out government, who is involved in torturing and killing of pashtoons on both side of the border, and responsible for unstability of pashtoon regions..., and no one here is even offended.. hahaha... i find it humerous. basically you are spitting in the air, it will fall down on ur face.

I mean if ur presence in PF is merely to show pashtoons in KP are sell outs, then... OK.
