  • Yes, the chaderi !

Mine was Olive Green, I still remember the exact shade of it.

I want to mention that it's not well suited for walking over boulders in the mountains which is how the fighters travel. They did not and do not have Superhighways to Gardez and Khost from the border.

There are few paved roads: one stumbles around over jagged rocks that slide under your feet.

[ This is a side point but speaking about purported gains from the American era, there is a distinct lack of improvement in this dept, I suspect, in rural Pashtun areas.

One must ask where are those benefits that were supposedly to be gained for the average people ?

It is as easy as pie for American construction companies to come in and pave nice roads for local residents. How many completed roads in the border provinces have appeared? I bet it's not much different were I to walk the same paths in my olive green chaderi today!]

I would like you to show us those pictures (which btw your likes oppose). I am sure you can dig up those old pics for all of us to share...

I have answered your questions but as a challenge I would like to know how much YOU respect your women (forget respecting other women, we both know its in the extent of words only). Is your religion only to the extent that benefits you, like DENYING the other rights of respect towards women... like say inheritance... or their right to REFUSE a marriage, or their rights to a proper education, the same happiness that is brought about when you give birth of a son(still ashamed for a daughter right?).... I am sure that Islam you don't like but when it comes to issues like that you like to hide behind the burqa of tradition.... I am sure you respect your women soo much that you don't even let them touch a computer,in case they go "astray" and most of the women here on this forum live far from the ignorance of your "tradition/so-called religion(not Islam, but what the likes of you think is Islam)" of our mother-land... remember this is NOT a party line BUT a religious line I am stating..... what you call "ghairath" against dishonor for not following your rules of tradition is all forbidden in Islam... I just hope and pray your religion does not extend only to the burqa and you follow the rest too, however against it maybe towards your personal interests.....

All yours my friend, feel free to answer any of those objections any time...

I don't see how my questions are answered when the answers given have little to nothing to do with the questions I asked.

Save the "fatwa" and "Moulwi Sahib" diversions for someone else; that tactic won't work on me. I have not made any religious pronouncements on the legitimacy or necessity of the Burqaa. Try again.

Your claim that the Burqa was not Afghan, yet I don't see Burqas worn anywhere outside of the Afghan and/or Afghan connected communities. Even in Saudi Arabia where women generally cover from head to toe I don't see Burqa, I see Naqab. The reason I even bother asking is because you're being intellectually dishonest for your cause. This is why I say you're merely towing the partyline, regurgitating whatever slogan that's being told. Rather than addressing the claim itself.

As for your "baiting questions" I would answer them, but I won't in this context, not out of fear but because You're trying to smokescreen and divert focus away from the Questions I asked you. When you can effectively and relevantly answer my questions. Then I will answer yours accordingly. But your attempt at trying to pigeonhole as aligned with certain cliches and stereotypes you have built up in your head only reveals further intellectual dishonesty on your part. I will however entertain your questions after mine are done as well.

and As another poster here said in Afghanistan, it's not traditionally called burqa anyways, it's called Chaddari. the Chaddar that South Asians usually identify with is called Poranai in Pashto

          • Im sure Mariam was posting these for amusement, maybe.

But the two DO look ridiculous!
            Especially the American flag one.
WHO ON EARTH WOULD WEAR THAT?
Not even the most pro-Karzai regime woman would be likely to
appear in that in public !

            Are these actually for sale?

Has anyone bought them? For some real purpose, not American jokesters thinking they are being so funny doing a parody of "oppressed women" of "the Orient", which is how they might term it ---
Barely able to differentiate between Afghanistan and Iraq or any other country.
            As GYE suggested too.

            The camouflage one is absurd.
I was there when the Soviets were bombing constantly from the skies and the tiniest bit of white or color would be detected by them.
I had to keep my hair covered when traveling with fighters because they felt Soviet pilots could catch a glint of it in the sunlight.

But believe me, I never saw a single Pashtun woman wearing anything so dumb as the Camouflage Chaderi ! So if they didn't THEN, they certainly wouldn't now, when there are less bombardments from above.

The Soviets used that as intimidation and punishment.

I have the impression the American military saw the huge wastage of ammunition, deaths of pilots, capture and awful fate of aircrew, and decided to employ more ground tactics - OR drones.

Certainly this outfit would never stop a drone from attacking one's area as it's all pre-programmed of course. No need for the camouflage.

One of the few people that particular color combination may have helped was ...me!
            Too late now, though!

I believe it is very inspiring for other members and various readers worldwide
to see with their own eyes.
Maybe they will feel like trying to wear something modest in whatever way they can that fits with their lives.

I'll run a few by you first, however, to make sure I have the right style.

                          • I do understand why it might be good for some women in war torn countries like afghanistan to wear one.

You'll have some men, perhaps a small minority of thugs, who can act with impunity due to there being no functioning police force.

I think the mystery that it could be the thug's sister etc, is enough to keep them from committing crime.

But i do long for the days when Afghan women dispose of the Burkha and dress as they once used to many centuries ago.

there is no shortage of sexual assaults and rape in societies where there are functioning police forces.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

sir a burkha or hijab is a matter of faith & not circumstances burkha is a respectful & dignified way of dress code one should be at least respected for wearing it but not forced to wear it secondly it is not a cultural phenomenon if that would be the case then tell me what is the cultural similarities between morocco & malaysia or indonesia or for that matter egypt & brunei they have different culture's in all aspect but then why do we have ladies wearing it in quiet a good number in almost all the muslim countries or countries that have a relatively large number of muslims . Having said that a lady must be free to decide whether to wear it or not if she wear's it one should respect her decision & the lady that does not wear's it one should respect her decision as well it has to go both ways as there is no compulsion in islam like the sister who does not wears it nothing wrong in it same way the sister who wears the burkha or hijab there nothing wrong in it either so like any other dressings the burkha or hijab must also be respected & NOT looked down upon or wished to be disposed of no sir that is not fair either, so burkha or hijab jeans or skirt both should be treated with respect & NOT looked down upon
