You should not be concerned with Afghan women. Watch my video.

You know what as much as I WANT to rebut you, you actually make valid points in this video. I don't necessarily agree with the idea that a valid alternative to the Afghan ways is the western ways which you seem to endorse in other pieces you create. Somethings regarding the social regulations on female behavior is evolutionary rather than insecurity. But the extremes Afghans go is definitely a sign of insufficient manhood.

In Islamabad, there is a street crossing called "Peshawar Mor". Just across it are some newly established tikka shops probably by guys from KPK. One of them has the name "Khyber Shinwari Tikka Karahi". Every evening, there gather tens of dozens of Afghan women mostly Pashtun to collect alms (few loafs of bread) from visitors to feed their kids.

It can be a real embarrassment for any Pashtun passing that street and seeing his/her people in such a bad condition especially the women folk (Pashtun sense of ghairath). In the neighboring villages, you see Afghan Pashtun women almost routinely picking woods from fields for fuel and exposed to taunts /ridicule from the locals.

And it is not limited just to this. Most of the scavengers not to mention garbage collectors (the lowest menial job by Pakistani standards) ) in Islamabad, Pindi, Lahore, etc. are Pashtuns from Afghanistan and now increasingly internally displaced KPKians. It seems Pashtuns have have won their ghairath(Pashtunwali)/religion but lost a dignified way of living.

That was my street and I saw those women. What you have said here is true.

what is so wrong about this video that everyone is offended? the only reasons i can think of are guilt and shame. except for wawrina's case. i don't know what her point is. maybe she is ashamed of or angry by being reminded of something about which she had convinced herself otherwise.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

this is a good video. Violence against women can never be justified, doesn't matter what mullahs are preaching

Not distracted by the miswak/toothbrush comment, I think some very important points are made in this video. I've long been a supporter of AfghanAid and some years ago at a conference a point was made that the average life expectancy of an Afghan women was 41 years and by the time she died she was a grandmother multiple times over.

It's a massive issue, and not just exclusive to Afghanistan. The struggle for women across the developing (and developed) world to gain more control over their own lives is a 2015 United Nations Millennium Development goal. It's a slow (global) process that the UN is unlikely to meet. However, if there is economic and political stability all the UN indications are that a girl with a Grade 5 education is more likely to have surviving daughters when she, herself, is a mother and they are more likely to get beyond Grade 5, thus leading to upwards mobility and independence. Other interventions are needed, of course, but education is a good way to start.

Are the children dying very young counted ?

I mean, if there is a lot of kids dying before 1 year old because of the nonexistant healthcare, then this "average" isn't really the average life expectancy for the grown up people who survived after 5 years old.

Because the dead children are lowering the "average".

I've always been wondering this because I see many pictures of old Afghans, and they seem to clearly be more than 50 years old.

Good point Al Hanif. To be honest, I wasn't sure how the statistics were put together in a war torn country. Like I say (re-read my post) I was at a seminar/conference and the point of average life expectancy was mooted.

It's a hard life, let's not forget and for those of us with access to functioning governance, health care, infrastructure and education, we often forget the hardships that people elsewhere have to endure. That was the key point that I was making.
