  • Pashto for dummies

I know there is already 100 threads on learn pashto...but they are too advanced for me. I tried saying some of what I read on the other threads to my pashto speaking friends and they just looked at me like I am speaking some african language ...I tried saying rayghla? ..didn't work.

so I want to learn simple phrases with proper pronounciation ...here is what they've taught me so far:

    Sengay?
    Joray?
    Pakhaira?
    Takrai?
    Tazaya?

Kaymanacho? (i screw this one up sometimes)

If someone says to me, manana ..which means thank you, i think...how do I say you are welcomed. What is the proper response?

Forgive me brothers and sisters for sounding like a hick and for being insensitive but I am very amaturish and too direct and terse for my own good....which brings me to the second question: how do you say "I am sorry?" ..this one is important lol

    Alchemist,

All the words you have listed, are questions, made up of two words. Below are some slight corrections.

Tsenga ye (for both male and female)
    Jorh ye/Jorha ye (male/female respectively)
Pe khair ye (for both male and female)
Takrha ye (for both male and female)
Taaza ye (for both male and female)

I am unsure of the word you're asking - Are you asking about the word Raghla (which means she came)?

There are various ways in which you can respond to a thank you. Some are listed below:

    Har kela - anytime
Khwahish kawoma - I am requesting (a phrase used to say you're requesting them not to use formalities)
De manene qaabel nedai - It is not worth a thank you

    And sorry would be:

Bakhena ghwarhema - I ask for forgiveness
    Wo bakha - forgive me

And, lastly, you don't need to be apologetic or put yourself down to request help. =)

I hope you don't mind me dumping in on your thread alchemist bro.

Since pakhtuns are taking over my town, I've got a lot more teachers haha.

Finally got an opportunity to speak some of our beloved pakhto.

I just need to get corrected and get the proper meanings of these following words:

      da hagha/dagha
      raka/rata(im not sure)
      walwalaira
      weena/meena

how would you say" i have to go home now"
"i've got a lot of work to do"
      "what you been up to"
      "how is your business"
      "how much is that(item/product)"
      "I've been busy"

      Can someone help me please?

manana sister (what's sister in pashto?)
and how do you say, thank you VERY MUCH?

Bakhena ghwarhema - I ask for forgiveness

This is too difficult to pronounce "ghwar-hema" ?

Wa Bakho, ... this I can do.

              kel-a means time?

kawohma means request? or is it like mekonom in dari (I am doing)?
              and is it spelled ka-woh-ma?

ok I am going to say some of this to my father, who knows pashto, and see if he can tell I am speaking it too.

Is pashto like arabic when it comes to feminine and masculine objects?

like kitab is muhanas and mastara (ruler) is muzakar

                  manena khorey (khor means sister)
bakhena ghwarema literlly means i ask you for forgiveness but here it means excuse me.
there is not an answer to this in pashto so they dont say wo bakho as you said.
but jokingly they say allah dey wubakha.

                  Kela means when

kawoma means im doingin my eastern dialect we say koma,ze ta sara khaberey kawema/koma(im talking to you)
                  kar kawema/koma(im working)
                  intezaar kawoma/koma(im waiting)
                  etebaar kawema/koma(im trusting you)

                    I am so silly

The first pm I got when I joined the forum was titled Pa khair raghley

                    I assumed raghley meant guy

now I know Pa khair raghlay means welcome ...or dari's equivalent of ba khair raseedee.
