The concept of grammatical gender is difficult to explain because neither Dari nor English distinguish between masculine and feminine nouns.
It is just an attribute that nouns have. It is independent from natural gender, and sadly, you will just have to know which words are masculine and which are feminine as there are no rules you can follow. Yet another reason why Pashto is so difficult.
But then again, Russian has five noun classes (masculine, feminine, neuter, common and reciprocal) and Arabic distinguishes between masculine and feminine in the single and masculine and feminine in the dual and masculine and feminine in the plural and human and non-human plurals. lol enough of a tangent.. but you get the point, this is yet again another thing that you will learn by speaking Pashto more, inshallah.
