Tajikistan Moves To Ban Arabic Names, Marriages Between First Cousins

awmakers in Tajikistan have voted to ban Arabic-sounding “foreign” names as well as marriages between first cousins, approving legislation to restrict two common practices that have irked the government of the predominantly Muslim country.

Reading out proposed amendments to the country's Family and Civil Registration laws ahead of the vote in the lower house of parliament on January 13, Justice Minister Rustam Shohmurod said that "foreign" names have caused divisions in Tajik society.

The restriction on names is clearly aimed to combat a growing trend in the Central Asian nation, where parents now frequently choose Arabic and traditional Islamic names for their newborn babies.
It is expected to win approval in the upper house and to be signed into law by President Emomali Rahmon, who has taken steps to promote secularism and discourage beliefs and practices that he sees as foreign or as a threat to stability in the former Soviet republic.

Names derived from prominent figures in Islam, such as Sumayah, Aisha, and Asiya, were once almost nonexistent in Tajikistan but have become the most popular names for girls in recent years. Muhammad, Yusuf, and Abubakr are among the most popular names for boys.

The amendments also counter the trend of adding Islamic and Arabic suffixes and prefixes -- such as mullah, khalifa, shaikh, amir, and sufi -- to men’s names.

The state Committee for Language and Terminology recently announced that it has prepared a list of some 4,000 recommended names for newborns.

It said the list consists mostly of "pure" Tajik or Persian names and has been distributed to registry offices across the country to help parents to choose names for their babies.

During the parliamentary debate, lower house speaker Shukurjon Zuhurov said that picking the names from the official list is not compulsory. But he said parents must choose names that are “compatible with Tajik culture.”
The language committee has said the amendments apply to ethnic Tajiks only and would not be extended to ethnic minorities. Tajikistan has a large ethnic Uzbek minority, as well as smaller groups of Kyrgyz, Russians, and others.

The proposed ban on marriages between first cousins, which is also expected to win approval from the upper house and Rahmon, has prompted heated debate in a country where the practice is fairly common.

Supporters of the ban say that children of parents who are blood relatives run a higher risk of birth defects and genetic illnesses. Opponents say they want more evidence of that link.

The Health Ministry says it has registered more than 25,300 disabled children, 30-35 percent of whom were born to consanguineous marriages.

Health Minister Nusratullo Salimzoda told parliament the legislation would also require couples to undergo medical tests before registering a marriage.

The results would not legally bar people from tying the knot. But lawmaker Gulbahor Ashurova said mandatory medical tests would help make them “aware of any medical conditions" of their potential husband or wife and enable them to make "informed decisions.”

Very Good Idea, while people in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, are still worshiping arabs, and are basically dogs of arabs licking their feets. There is no dignity in a people who worships others, might as well kill themselves

I definitely do not agree with this move and regard it as anti-democratic.

Though I don't like Salafis I do not like militant neo-communist Islamophobes either.

IF you give a choice between choosing Salafis or Communists, I will choose Communists. I would have given you a different, prior my visit to Cuba, but I have seen that Communism isn't half as bad as West has said it is, I am not a commie at all, nor do I support it, but there is huge amounts of propaganda against communism by the capitalistic west and of course Wahabhi/Salafis are a huge part of the alliance of Capitalism against Communism

I always value first hand real experience to those of people that just read stuff. so you personally having been to Cuba carries great weight.

I think left-wing movements have played their part in creating a better world and forcing the ruling elite to cater for the interests of the working class.

However what is wrong is state-imposed ideologically based forced policies on a people's culture or religion.

If Tajiks themselves organically preferred "Tajik", "Farsi" names e.g. Pervez, Rustem etc to Arabic names that's totally fine, but to forbid a person from calling his son Hasan, Kamal, Ali is fascistic.

Extreme secularists and extreme fundamentalists are both threats to the Muslim world.

I agree with you 100%, of course I would not support anything forced by the government on to it's people. I am a logical person. However, then I think about the millions of arab/salafi wanabees in our part of the world, who actually want to force arab/salafi culture on to the locals, to counter that we need something. We need to go back to our roots. I was reading an article how places like Kerala and even Maldives, the Salafis have brainwashed the muslims in to thinking they are arabs. It's a campain that is happening through out south asia and africa, they love to target the poor people for their agendas

In Arakan, Pakistani and Arab "Islamists" told Rohingyas not to speak Bengali as it is a "Hindu" language (nonsense, Bengali survived due to Muslims whilst Hindus preferred Sanskrit).

In Bangladesh and in Pakhtunkhwa, Bengalis and Pakhtuns are taught to prefer Urdu and Pakistaniyat by Jamaatis and others in order to be "good Muslims". Many Jamaatis in Bangladesh are self-haters who hate the Bengali race and culture and want to be Pakistanis or Urdu-walas.

As for Arabic, I am opposed to forcible Arabization and have supported Kurds on this forum as well as Amazigh ("Berber"), but I am also opposed to oppression of Arabs or forced de-Arabization e.g. in Iranian-occupied Ahwaz where the Persian-nationalist Shia regime discourages use of the Arabic language, the language of the Quran.

Many "Islamists" think that anyone who claims to be a defender of Islam is automatically an angel, hence you have fools on this forum who revere Erdogan.

The Iranians, Erdogan, Saudis, Pakistani military all exploit Islam for their benefit and pretend to be "champions of Islam".

Re Tajikistan: The Tajik regime is very Islamophobic.

Tajikistan is debating legislation to ban Arabic names as part of an ongoing campaign against Islam that has seen men being forced to shave their beards and women in hijab being labelled prostitutes.
Authorities prepare list of acceptable alternatives for parents amid warning that ‘unsuitable’ names will not be registered. Eurasianet.org reports

No one should be supporting these neo-communist fascists in their war against Islam.

              Islamophobic dictator of Tajikistan, Rakhmanov.

This is a threat to stability itself since it is limiting peoples choice. Those who seek to over throw the gov will use this to convince people that the gov is tyrannical and is limiting people the right to choose. They are adding fuel to the fire.

arabic name trend is also in full boom in pakistan too, every blockhead see it a shortest path to heaven. banning seems like a quick fix which is not, a conservative society is always skeptic about religious issues and possibly backlash. another methods should be adopted.

an incompetent government will always go for quick patch, they can't bother themselves with tedious tasks of spreading awareness among people about their culture and telling them that choosing arabic names for all of your children will actually add zero sawab into your amalnama.

Honestly getting rid of Islam will not solve your problems. Tajikistan is unislamic anyway if such proposals can be passed in parliament. Tajikistan have failed because of their own incompetence.
