Saudi diplomat ‘made two women work like slaves in London home’

    BENEDICT MOORE-BRIDGER

    Published: 13 November 2013 Updated: 11:30, 13 November 2013

A Saudi diplomat and his wife allegedly forced two trafficked women to work in slave-like conditions at their London home.

The envoy kept the women as virtual prisoners, confiscated their passports, prevented them from contacting their families, forbade them from leaving the property on their own and racially harassed them, legal papers claim.

But Jarallah Al-Malki and his wife have won an appeal to allow them to claim diplomatic immunity, meaning they may not have to answer the claims made in an employment tribunal document seen by the Evening Standard.

The allegations of mistreatment have not yet been examined in court as the hearings have so far only been to decide whether the couple can claim immunity. Papers state that Filipino Cherrylyn Reyes and Indonesian Titin Rohaetin Suryadi were employed as “domestic workers”.

Ms Reyes claims she was made to work more than 17 hours a day, seven days a week, with no pay. She alleges her passport was taken, that she was not allowed to contact her family, and was not allowed out of the house except with Al-Malki or his family.

She fled after contacting police on March 14, 2011, the documents state.

Ms Suryadi, who was employed two months later, claims she was made to work similar hours and was given only two sums of £195 and £238 in a payment direct to her family. She claims she could not leave the house except to take rubbish to the garden.

Ms Suryadi managed to escape on September 19, 2011, when Al-Malki was away and his wife was asleep in bed.

An employment tribunal was told the pair each had letters from the UK Border Agency which stated: “The competent authority has... concluded that there are reasonable grounds to believe that you have been trafficked.”

But it was ruled that to establish whether the pair had been trafficked was beyond the scope of the tribunal.

The women are bringing claims for unfair dismissal, racial discrimination and harassment, failure to pay the minimum wage and breach of working time regulations.

A judge had said if the claims were proved, their treatment would mean that granting diplomatic immunity would amount to a breach under Human Rights law — the right to a fair trial.

But the decision was overturned on appeal last month and the diplomat can claim immunity.

The appeal judge allowed lawyers for the women to ask the Court of Appeal to decide whether diplomatic immunity unfairly interferes with human rights, which could ultimately see all domestic workers equally protected and mean the pair’s case would be heard.

Charities have warned hundreds of domestic workers employed by diplomats are potentially trafficked, with 500 visas granted to such staff annually.

Solicitors from firm Reynolds Porter Chamberlain, representing the Al-Malkis, did not respond to a request for comment.

*Saudi savages practising inhumane and unIslamic de facto slavery in the relatively civilized west i.e. UK.

This "diplomat" was presumably an educated person and was meant to represent his country in a positive light, he has done the opposite.

However this behaviour is standard in Saudi Arabia.

Here are some reader's comments from the "Saudi Gazette", a propaganda outlet owned by the Al-Saud tribe.

Saudis drove away illegal workers. Now let them do the work!

The article "Housewives: Fill vacuum left by illegals" (Nov. 14) reports that Saudi housewives are demanding that the authorities provide substitutes to fill the vacuum left by their illegal domestic workers who have been forced to leave the country.

It's funny how some Saudis blame expatriates for all their miseries like unemployment and crime. Who brought these foreign workers to Saudi Arabia in the first place? They certainly would not enter your country without a sponsor.

And now, after getting rid of them, you ask: "Who is going to fill the vacuum left by the illegal workers?" I have the answer: "You drove them away. Now, you yourselves should fill the vacuum. You do the work!"

        Joey, Online response

Brave words are being spoken, such as "we can manage without illegal workers". I will give you three months and you will run out of steam. The only problem is that hiring new labor will cost you a lot more. It's the law of supply and demand. Who would want come here and risk deportation?

Saudi Gazette - Saudis drove away illegal workers. Now let them do the work!

There was another post there which I can't find now but which says Saudis will not be able to fill in the gap created by the expelled workers, they are just not used to working hard, and are lazy and argumentative.

If for the next few months aspects of Saudi life are dysfunctional it will have taught the fools in Riyadh that they did not handle this mass expulsion of workers properly. They are indeed fools. They should take notice of these riots and flooding and repent for their sins and evil.

On defence.pk there is a Saudi regime thug called Yzd Khalifa, who has mocked Bangladesh including war crimes and also threatened Russia with terrorism (he alluded to Saudi-backed "Jihadists" in the Caucasus). He also lavishes extravagant praise for Pakistan and his undying love for that country. However even the Pakistanis took part in the Riyadh intifada. I support those Pakistanis who did that because they took part in a protest against tyranny and oppression and stood up for human dignity.

20 expats face probe over Jeddah rioting

Last updated: Saturday, November 16, 2013 9:11 PM

          Saudi Gazette report

JEDDAH — Police are investigating 20 Ethiopian and Pakistani expatriates accused of taking part in riots and shutting down King Fahd (Sitteen) Road in Jeddah on Thursday.

The rioters used wood and rocks to set up roadblocks on one of the city's main arteries, eyewitnesses said. The rioters also trashed car windows and terrorized motorists at the location.

The accused face charges of breaking the Kingdom's rules and regulations. They will also face charges of disturbing public peace, carrying light weapons and blocking the road.

Police are currently completing their files in order to transfer the cases over to the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution for further investigation.

Several legal Ethiopian residents in the Kingdom were angered at the actions of the accused and criticized them for disturbing public peace and security.

"We are shocked at the acts committed by the accused. The Kingdom hosted these people and their families and provided them with a good living. They should respect the law of the country and not the other way around. They had been living here in the Kingdom for many years and they should have known the rules and regulations by now. Every country has rules that organize the existence of foreign labor. The Kingdom, like any other country in the world, has the right to organize its market,” said Yusuf Bajazi, an Ethiopian expatriate.

Mosa Dardeer, another Ethiopian resident, said the Kingdom had given ample time for violators of residency laws to take advantage of an amnesty granted by the government earlier this year and rectify their legal statuses.

Okaz/Saudi Gazette met with a number of violators who expressed remorse for their actions and what happened. Muhammad Hasan, one of the accused, said, "We thought by doing this they will speed up the deportation process. We committed a big mistake and these actions were irresponsible,” he said while urging others to respect the rules of the country.

Ishteyaq Hussein, one of the detained Pakistanis, said he saw a group of Ethiopians carrying knives and wooden planks blocking the road. They claimed they were doing this because they wanted the government to speed up their deportation process.

"I joined them because I want to be deported soon. Now I regret what I did," he added.
Saudi Gazette - 20 expats face probe over Jeddah rioting

This is a sanitized article by a regime controlled propaganda organ, "Saudi Gazette", however even Pakistanis took part in the Riyadh intifada and I support the bravery and courage of these Pakistanis who did so. Though they will suffer personal loss, they will be remembered in history as people who contributed to an event that the entire world saw and shook one of the most backwards and oppressive regimes on earth.

0.3m Pakistanis facing deportation from Saudi Arabia

            Noor Aftab

            Thursday, November 07, 2013
            From Print Edition

ISLAMABAD: As many as 0.3 million Pakistanis who have failed to legalise their status in Saudi Arabia till November 3, the deadline given for this purpose, now face risk being fined, jailed or deported from the Kingdom, the sources told The News here on Wednesday.

According to official statistics, 0.8 million Pakistanis have legal status in Saudi Arabia but 0.3 million Pakistanis are yet to legalise their status. Now those Pakistanis who have failed to legalise their status may face action by the Saudi authorities, the official documents revealed.

Muhammad Naeem Khan, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, pointed out that a total of 729,932 Pakistani workers have so far benefited from the amnesty deadline as 396,152 nationals have changed their sponsorships and 333,780 workers their professions to legalise their status in the Kingdom.

The official figures of the Saudi Arab ministry stated that the Kingdom hosts eight million foreign workers, mostly in very low-paid jobs, and there are another two million unregistered non-Saudi workers who must legalise their status or face action.

It is pertinent to mention here that expatriates living and working in Saudi Arabia, had been given until November 3 to set their papers in order or risk severe punishment and deportation. An earlier three-month amnesty deadline, which ended on July 3, was extended to November 3.

When contacted, Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said that the Pakistan Embassy in Saudi Arabia is in touch with the Saudi authorities and Pakistani people as well and “we are putting in our best efforts to help resolve the issues of all the Pakistani people working in Saudi Arabia.”

“Our Ambassador and Consulate General in Jeddah are in complete touch with the Saudi officials and also making efforts to help Pakistanis rectify their documents for attainment of legal status in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

            Saudi Arabia deports 54,000 Pakistanis

            November 15, 2013 RECORDER REPORT

Pakistan's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Muhammad Naeem Khan said from May to November 3 at least 0.8 million Pakistanis legalise their status to work in Saudi Arabia for which Pakistan embassy worked day and night for the past six months. Ambassador Muhammad Naeem Khan told BBC that there are 1.5 Pakistanis in Saudi Arabia out of which 54,000 were deported after they failed to legalise their status in Saudi Arabia till November 3.

"There is a fear of imprisonment and deporting of thousands of Pakistanis in the Kingdom," Naeem said. These Pakistanis have been facing difficulties after the start of a drive against illegal immigrants in the Kingdom. Saudi authorities have sent tens of thousands of illegal residents from Asian and African countries to their homes. The drive was started after an Amnesty Scheme for the immigrants to get the legalised status in the Kingdom.

However, most of the Pakistanis, about 800,000, got the benefit of the scheme and got themselves registered legally there. Meanwhile, Makkah police have detained 4,060 illegal workers following the government crackdown on visa and residency violators over the past 10 days. Spokesman Colonel Abdulmohsin Al-Maiman told Arab News that the illegal workers were handed over to the deportation center for their final exit to their home countries.

Some of these Pakistanis will no doubt include Pashtuns. Pashtun families may now have lost breadwinners who were sending them money to survive.

              2. Since the independence of Bangladesh they have always supported pro-Pakistani, anti-Bangladeshi groups in Bangladesh such as Jamaat.

They punish Bangladesh in order to please Pakistan.

              3. However they only target Bangladesh as they are bullies, they respect India and have very good relations with it to the extent that it angers Pakistani nationalists. India occupies Kashmir, is a Hindu country whereas Bangladesh is a Muslim country and occupies nobody but it is Bangladesh which is targeted by the Saudi regime.

The Saudis will pay for their crimes.

The only major Muslim country which displayed any sort of support for Bengalis in 1971 was Turkey. Not in an official capacity but their influential newspapers talking against the war by the Pakistan army. Anyway Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, America they were all on the losing side as Bengalis won.

Heavy rainfall flooded Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh late Saturday, disrupting road traffic and prompting authorities to close schools.

Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense urged people in Riyadh to remain indoors until the floodwater subsides.

Pictures and videos circulated on social media showed the streets of Riyadh, a city of about 5 million people, flooded.

Road traffic and normal life was brought to a near halt in the usually bustling capital, Al Arabiya television reported.

The correspondent said security and civil defense forces were heavily mobilized in the capital to deal with any emergencies that may arise

Ethiopian men were chased and stabbed, while women were raped to death by 6-9 Saudi men in-front of their children, friends, brothers and sisters. How would you feel if this happen to your family?

Saudis in Mecca protest in solidarity with Saudis arrested in Qaseem (central Saudi, conservative heartland of the Najd).

At 0.40 means the speaker talks of the arrest of 12 women with their children and asks the Saudi regime. Where is your Islam? Where is your brotherhood? Where is your manliness? These are our sisters. These are our mothers. These are our daughters.

The poster reads "Itlaqoo nisaa" (free the women).

The following video is from Riyadh:

= "We are the mothers, women, daughters and sisters of those remaining in the prisons of the house of Sau'd".

They ask for the release of their loved ones. At 2.36 you can see children protesting.

The above video says that the House of Saud are the doers of corruption on the land.

The Saudi regime need to stop oppressing their citizens and considering the country as their personal property.

Saudis themselves are getting sick and tired of this stupid family and their evil regime.

This video is a good summary in the English language of most of the previous videos. However the first few videos are in Arabic and even for those who don't speak Arabic they can capture the intensity of the emotion felt by the women relatives of the arrested and others. People in Saudi Arabia do not want a revolution and instability, they want a peaceful and gradual change to a society which gives individual citizens more respect and basic rights e.g. freedom from arbitrary arrest and indefinite detention.

The following video is from the beginning of last year and shows the Shias in Qatif, eastern Saudi Arabia protesting and burning pictures of "Prince" Nayef who had died.

"Saudi" Arabia is no longer the same country it was in the best as citizens having watched Al-Jazeera for years and hearing about democracy and citizens rights, having seen the Arab spring e.g. fall of Mubarak, Qadafi and also aware of the power of social media are more willing to speak out.
