    Ash'ariyyah: Spotlight Overview

    source: troid.org
    Ash’ariyyah: An astray sect that claims to follow Abul-Hasan al-Ash’aree, they deny all of Allaah’s Attributes except seven: [1] Life, [2] Knowledge, [3] Capability, [4] Speech, [5] Wanting, [6] Hearing, and [7] Seeing

    The Ashaa’irah were founded by Abul-Hasan al-Ash’aree in the first part of his affair. Afterwards, he differed with the Mu’tazilah, not to mention that he recanted from that and came to the madhhab of the Salaf. Their basic reference point is the intellect, and they reject some of the Attributes and perform ta‘weel (figurative explanation) for some of them. Refer to al-Ajwibatus-Sadeedah (4/53) of al-’Allaamah Zayd Ibn Muhammad al-Madkhalee.

    Concerning the 'Aqeedah of Abul-Hasan al-Ash'aree and that which he died upon:
    The Scholars of the Salaf have exhibited an outstanding role in foiling the plans of the enemies of Islaam - in all their different sects, and the varying doubts they propagate. And that, by which the Islaamic Aqeedah was put to trial with in its very first period was but the various madhaahib and new ideas which entered it by way of philosophy and theological rhetoric...
    And Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree in the first part of his life, used to be a Mu'tazilee since he was brought up at the hands of Abu Alee al-Jubaa'ee, the Shaikh of the Mu'tazilah of Basrah in his time.
    And Allaah willed goodness for Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree and granted him success in taking from the Book and the Sunnah and abandoning the madhhab of the Mu'tazilah. Then he refuted the sophistry of the Mu'tazilah, exposed their falsehood, rendered futile their arguments with both textual evidence and by way of reason. His books testify to that. He then remained, for a period, speaking in certain matters of belief, with the saying of Ibn Kullaab. However, in the final stage of his life he was upon the aqeedah of the Salaf and he spoke with whatever Imaam Ahmad spoke with - may Allaah have mercy upon him - with respect to all the Attributes of Allaah. So he affirmed for Allaah whatever Allaah affirmed for himself and whatever His Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) affirmed for Him in his Sunnah.
    The Book 'al-Ibaanah' - Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree's Last Book
    And this has been recorded in his book called Al-Ibaanah 'an Usool id-Diyaanah. However, those who ascribed themselves to the madhhab of Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree continued taking from the madhhab of Ibn Kullaab and passed it on to those who ascribed themselves to Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree, generation after generation. The truth, however, is what the scholars testify to, those in whose honesty, integrity and impartiality there is no doubt, that the aqeedah which Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariee held and worshipped Allaah with, is the aqeedah which he has affirmed in his book Al-Ibaanah and that this was the last of his books in which the matter of his aqeedah was settled.
    In the present time, many ascribe themselves to Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree and call themselves Ash'ariyyah, claiming that they are holding fast to the aqeedah he was upon, especially in the matters of the Attributes of Allaah. However, the truth is that they have not taken the aqeedah that he embraced at the end of his life and which is propounded in his two books al-Ibaanah 'an Usool id-Diyaanah and al-Maqaalaat ul-Islaamiyyeen.
    What is more strange, however is their claim that Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree wrote his book al-Ibaanah out of taqiyyah (deception) and as an attempt to outwit the Hanbalees, fearing them, for his life. It is well known that taqiyah is but nifaaq (hypocrisy) and this blameworthy characteristic is something the common Muslim seeks to be free from, then how about a Muslim scholar?
    And since this slander was an oppression against him and a clear forgery against him, a number of scholars, known to be possessors of knowledge and piety embarked upon explaining the truth. So they exposed the falsehood of those lies and slanders against this esteemed scholar and explained that taqiyah and nifaaq are not the characteristics of the scholars and that Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree is far removed from that.

    And everything that has come in his books al-Ibaanah and al-Maqaalaat is what he believes and worships Allaah with. He said, in al-Maqaalaat: "And with everything that they [i.e. the Ahl ul-Hadeeth] spoke with, we speak with and go towards it."

    He also said in al-Maqaalaat: "The summarisation of that which the People of Hadeeth and Sunnah are upon..." and then he lists that which they were upon including therein:

    "And that Allaah the Sublime and Exalted is upon His Throne just as He has said:
    "Ar-Rahmaan has ascended (istawaa) the Throne" [Soorah Taa Haa 20:5]

    "And that He has two Hands, without asking how, just as He has said:
    "I created you with My (Two) Hands" [Soorah Taa Haa 20:75]

    and as He has said:
    But [both] His Hands are outstretched" [Soorah Maa'idah 5:64]

    "And they affirm both Hearing and Seeing for Him and they do not negate that from Allaah as the Mu'tazilah have negated it."

    As for those who have ascribed the book al-Ibaanah to Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree and have testified that it was his last book concerning aqeedah then they are numerous and amongst them:
    • al-Haafidh Ibn Asaakir in Tabyeenul Kadhabul-Muftaree (p.152) which is a refutation of al-Ahwaazee,
    • al-Bayhaqee in al-I'tiqaad (p.31),
    • Imaam adh-Dhahabee in al-Uluww (no.276) and Ibn ul-'Imaad in Shadhraat udh-Dhahab (p.303).

      Furthermore, Abu Qaasim Abdul Malik bin Eesaa bin Darbaas [2] (d. 659H) in his book, adh-Dhabb an Abee Hasan al-Ash'ariyy, mentions the People of Knowledge who have ascribed this book to Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy and have testified to it being his aqeedah which he embraced at the end of his life and amongst them he names:
    • Al-Imaam al-Haafidh Abul-Abbaas Ahmad bin Thaabit at-Turqee,
    • Abu Uthmaan Ismaa'eel as-Saaboonee,
    • Imaam ul-Qurraa Abu Alee Hasan bin Alee bin Ibraaheem al-Faarisee,
    • al-Imaam al-Faqeeh Abul-Fath Nasr al-Maqdisee,
    • al-Imaam al-Haafidh Abul-Qaasim Alee bin Hasan bin Hibatullaah ash-Shaafi'ee, al-Faqeeh Abul-Ma'aalee Majallee,
    • and al-Haafidh Abu Muhammad bin Alee al-Baghdaadee.

    And were it not for the fact that this is but a brief refutation, then we would have quoted the words of every single one of them, testifying to the details of the aqeedah of Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy, as contained and expounded in his al-Ibaanah and its agreement with that of the Salaf us-Saalih

    Abul-Hasan al-Ash'aree's Beliefs mention in one of his final books: Al-Ibaanah
    Abu Hasan al-'Ash'aree (rahimahullaah) said:
    Praise be to Allaah the One, the almighty the glorious, the only one to whom unity is ascribed, the Magnified in praise, whom the attribute of Human beings do not adequately describe. He has neither adversary nor rival, and He is the creator and the restorer, "The Doer of what He wills"- [11:109] He is too exalted to possess consorts or children, too holy to associate with the genera of creation or things corrupt. He has not form capable of expression, nor is a definition of Him by means of a simile possible.
    If anybody says to us, "You have denied the beliefs of the Mu`tazilah, the Qadariyyah, the Jahmiyyahh, the Haruriyyah the Rafidha and the Murji`a; now let us know the beliefs you hold and the religion you follow," the answer is:
    The belief we hold and the religion we follow consists of:
    Holding fast to the book of our Lord, to the Sunnah of our Prophet, and the traditions related on the authority of the Companions and the Successors and the Imaams1 of hadeeth - to that we hold firmly...
    The essence of our belief is that we confess faith in Allaah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the revelation of Allaah, and what the trustworthy have handed down on the authority of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) , rejecting none of them.
    We confess that Allaah is One - There is none worthy of worship but He - unique, eternal, possessing neither consort nor child;
    and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), who He sent with the guidance and the real Religion;
    and that Paradise is real and Hell is real ;
    and that there is no doubt regarding the Coming Hour; and that Allaah will raise up all those who are in the graves ;
    and that Allaah (istiwaa) His throne (as He has said, "Ar-Rahmaan has ascended (istawaa) the Throne" - [20:5] ) ;
    and that He has a face (as He has said, "but the Face of thy Lord shall abide resplendent with majesty and glory" - [55:27] ) ;
    And that He has two hands, bila kaifa (without asking how?) (as He has said "I have created with my two hands," - [38:75] and he has said, "nay! Outstretched are both His hands" - [5:69]);
    and that He has an eye, without asking how (as He has said "under Our eyes it floated on" - [54:14] ),
    and that anybody who thinks that the names of Allaah are other than He is in error;
    and that Allaah has Knowledge (as He has said, in His knowledge He sent it down," - [4:164] ), and as He said, "And no female concieveth and bringeth forth without His knowledge" - [35:12] ),
    we also assert that Allaah has hearing and sight, and we do not deny it as the Mu`tazila, the Jahmiyyah, and the Khaarijites deny it;
    And we assert that Allaah has Prowess (Quwwah) (as He has said, "saw they not that Allaah Who created them was mightier than they in Prowess?" -[41:14] );

    Are the Ash'arees from the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-jama'aah?
    Imaam Abul-'Abbaas ibn Suraij known as 'ash-Shaafi'ee the second' and he was a contemporary of Al-Ash'aree, said: "We do not speak with Ta'weel (interpretation) of the Mu'tazilah, the Ash'arees, the Jahmiyyah, the apostates, the anthropomorphists (Mujassimah and Mushabbihah), the Karraamiyyah and those who declare Allaah to be like His creation (Mukayyifah - those asking about the modality of His attributes). Rather we accept them [the texts about Allaah's attributes] without interpretation (Ta'weel) and we believe in them without declaring any likeness with the creation (Tamtheel)."[3]
    Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymeen - may Allaah protect him - said: "So - for example - the Ash'arees and the Maatooreedees are not considered from Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah in this particular matter (i.e. concerning the Names and Attributes of Allaah). Rather, they oppose what the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and his Companions were upon with regards to accepting the Attributes of Allaah - the Most Perfect - upon their haqeeqah (real meaning). This is why, whoever says that Ahl us-Sunnah are three groups: the Salafees, the Ash'arees and the Maatooreedees - then such a person is indeed mistaken. Rather we say: How can all three be considered Ahl us-Sunnah and they differ with each other? What is there after Truth, except misguidance. How can they all be Ahl us-Sunnah, whilst each one of them refutes the other - this is not possible - except if it is possible to reconcile the opposites. There is no doubt however, that one of them is truly Ahl us-Sunnah - but which one? Is it the Ash'arees, the Maatooreedees or the Salafees? Whichever of them agrees with the Sunnah is considered to be Ahl us-Sunnah, whilst whichever of them opposes it is not. So we say: The Salaf are Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah, and this description cannot be true for anyone else other than them. So how can those who oppose the Sunnah be called Ahl us-Sunnah - this is not possible. How is it possible to say Ahl us-Sunnah are of three differing groups, but we say that they are in agreement? So where is the agreement and concensus? Rather, Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah are those who hold on to what the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) and his Companions were upon, and to the aqeedah of the Salaf - until the Day of Judgement - and they are the Salafees." What are some of the claims of the Ash'arees?
    The following example is extracted from an article concerning a famous Soofee Ash'aree.
    Al-'Izz Ibn 'Abdis-Salaam was an Ash'aree, Ash'arees are a people who twist the texts of the Book and the Sunnah until they explain away all of Allaah's Attributes except seven. [5] This was the belief of Al-'Izz ibn 'Abdis-Salaam.
    Al-'Izz himself said, after denying that Allaah has a real Hand, and explaining it away as power and authority:
    "And as for the one who says that he believes in these texts as the Salaf did (meaning that he affirms the Attributes), then verily he has lied. For how could he believe in something he does not understand, nor does he know the meaning of? To speak like this (meaning to explain the Hand as power) is not a blameworthy innovation, rather it is a praiseworthy innovation, an obligatory one due to the doubts that have spread…" [6]
    This is exactly the position of the Ash'arees. He also denied that the Qur'aan is the Speech of Allaah, claiming that it is only a reference to the Speech of Allaah, and that Allaah speaks with no letters or sounds. He said, "How strange is it that someone claims that the Qur'aan is made up of letters and sounds!" [7]
    Furthermore, he was asked about people who believe that Allaah is actually above His Throne, while He is everywhere by way of His Knowledge, which is the belief of Ahlus-Sunnah. He replied:
    "The apparent meaning of what Ibn Abee Zayd (the fourth century Maalikee scholar who held the correct beliefs referred to in the question) mentioned is that it is a claim that Allaah has a position, since he has made a distinction between His Presence above the Throne and His Presence with His Creation. So the base rule on the one who believes in a position, is that he has not left Islaam, since the scholars of Islaam have not put them out of Islaam, rather they ruled that they can inherit from the Muslims, be buried in their graveyards, have their blood and money honored, and they must be prayed over, like the rest of the leaders (literally "lords") of innovation…" [8]
    So he called those who believe that Allaah is above His Throne "Arbaab Al-Bida'", literally: the lords of innovation.
    [6] Fataawaa Al-'Izz Ibn 'Abdis-Salaam (p.456), Mu'assasatur-Risaalah printing, 1416.
    [7] At-Tabaqaat Ash-Shaafi'iyyah (8/224) of As-Subkee, as quoted by Khaalid Ath-Thufayree in Haqeeatul-'Izz ibn 'Abdis-Salaam (p.5). Indeed Allaah does speak with sounds aqnd letters, as occurs in the authentic narrations, "Then Allaah will call out with a voice…" and "Whoever reads a single letter from the Book of Allaah, then he will have ten rewards…" To deny this is to deny the basic meaning of speech itself.

    Who are the Maatureediyyah?
    It is a sect of theological rhetoric that ascribes itself to their Imaam, Aboo Mansoor al-Maatureedee al-Hanafee, who died in the (d.333H). In the face of the Maatureediyyah, we find another sect which can be considered a sister-sect, and that is the Ash’ariyyah, which ascribes itself to Abul-Hasan al-Ash’aree, which is a baseless and false ascription, since he is free of them and their falsehood. And this is the practice of Ahlul-Bid’ah in that they ascribe their innovations to the scholars of Islaam in order to support their falsehood. Both of these sects fall into ta‘weel (figurative explanation), ta’teel (denial) and attributing tafweed (relegation) to the Salaf, and in reality can be considered to be a single sect. What applies to one applies to the other.

    The Roots of the Sect (Kullaabiyyah)

    source: troid.org
    The Noble Scholar, Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (Member of the Permanent Committee of Major Scholars, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) mentioned in the highly beneficial booklet 'A Glimpse at the Deviated Sects' (Salafi Publications), concerning the roots of the Ashaa'irah:
    The madhhab of the Ashaa'irah branched off from the Mu'tazilah and the name is an ascription to Abul-Hasan al-Asha'aree (may Allaah have mercy upon him) who used to be a Mu'tazilee, then Allaah favoured him and he recognised the falsehood of the Mu'tazilee madhhab. So he stood in the mosque on a Friday and announced his disassociation from the madhhab of the Mu'tazilah. Then he took off his thawb (long shirt) and said: "I have discarded the madhhab of the Mu'tazilah just as I have discarded this thawb of mine".

    However, he then followed the madhhab of the Kullaabiyyah, the followers of 'Abdullah bin Sa'eed bin Kullab'', Who used to affirm seven attributes and negate all the others (Ibn Kullaab) said:

    "This is because the intellect only points towards or indicates seven attributes: Knowledge, Power, Will, Life, Hearing, Sight and Speech". And he said: "This is what the intellect indicate:, as for that which that the intellect does not indicate, then it is not affirmed."

    Then, Allaah blessed Abul-Hasan al-Ash'aree, so he left the madhhab of the Kullaabiyyah and returned to the madhhab of Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal, died 241H, (may Allaah have mercy upon him) and he said: "I say that which the Imaam of the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah, Ahmad bin Hanbal says' "Allaah made istiwaa (ascension) over the Throne and He has a Hand and a Face." And in his books: 'Al-Ibaanah 'an Usoolid-Diyaanah' and 'Maqaalaat al-Islaamiyeen wa Ikhtilaaf al-Musaleen', and he mentioned that he was upon the madhhab of Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal. However he held on to some ideas which differed from the truth.

    However most of his followers remained upon his previous madhhab, the Kullaabiyyah, and thus they are called al-Ashaa'irah, an ascription to al-Ash'aree during his first madhhab.

    However since he returned to the madhhab of Ahlus-Sunnah wal- Jamaa'ah, then to ascribe this Asha'ree madhhab to him is injustice. It is more appropriate to say 'the madhhab of the Kullaabiyyah' and not the madhhab of Abul Hasan al Ash'aree. This is because he repented from it as mentioned in his book 'Al-Ibaanah 'an-Usoolid-Diyaan’ where he clarified his return and his clinging to what Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah were upon, especially Ahmad bin Hanbal, even if he (Abul Hasan al-Ash'aree) had some remaining deviations, such as his statement regarding the Speech of Allaah: "Verily it is the meaning itself which stands alone and the Quraan is an interpretation of the Speech of and not His Speech itself"

    This is the madhhab of the Ashaa'irah which split off from the Mu'tazilah and the Mu'tazilah split off from the Jahmiyyah, and then many more sects branched off, all having their foundation in the madhhab of the Jahmiyyah.

      Are the Ash'arees from Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah?
      Are the Ash'arees from Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah? Source: The Methodology of the Asharees in Aqidah Article ID : AQD060003 - salafipublications.com As for the Ash'ariyyah of today then they are upon a way and path which Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree declared himself free of in front of Allaah, and the scholars consider them to be other than Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah but rather, in the midst of Ahl ul-Bid'ah[1]. Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah is used for those in opposition to the innovators and the people of the innovated sects, and this is the well known usage. So when they say in the books of criticism of narrators about a man, that he was from Ahl us-Sunnah and the like, then what is meant is that he was not from one of the innovated sects such as the Khawaarij, the Mu'tazilah and the Shee'ah and he was not a person of theological rhetoric (Kalaam) and innovated ideas.
      Thus, the Ash'ariyyah do not enter into it at all. Rather they are outside it and Imaam Ahmed and Ibn al-Madeenee have stated textually that whoever involves themselves in any theological rhetoric is not counted amongst the Ahl us-Sunnah, even if by that he arrives at the Sunnah, until he abandons debating and surrenders to the texts. So they do not lay down as a condition that a person merely agrees with the Sunnah, rather that he must take and derive with it (alone). So he who takes from the Sunnah is from its people even if he makes an error, and he who derives from somewhere else is in error even if in conclusion he agrees with it. But the Ash'ariyyah as you will see, take and derive from other than the Sunnah and they do not agree with it in their conclusions, so how can they be from its people [people of the Sunnah].
      A summary of the sayings of the scholars regarding the Ash'ariyyah are presented below:
      The Haafidh of the west and its outstanding scholar Ibn Abdul Barr reported with his chain of narration from the scholars of the Maalikees in the east, Ibn Khuzaimah, that he said in the book of witnesses (Kitaab us-Shuhudaat) in explanation of the saying of the Maalik that it is not permissible to accept the witness of the people of innovation and innovated sects, and he said: "The people of the innovated sects in the view of Maalik and the rest of our Companions are the people of theological rhetoric (Kalaam). So every person of the theological rhetoric is from the people of the innovated sects and innovation: whether he is an Ash'aree, or other than an Ash'aree, and his witness is not accepted in Islaam ever. Indeed he is to be ostracized, and punished for his innovation and if he persists in it and repentance is to be sought from him"[2]
      Also Ibn Abdul Barr himself reports in [Al-Ihtiqaa] from the three scholars: Maalik, Aboo Haneefah and Ash-Shaafi'ee that they forbade theological rhetoric and spoke severely against its people, and that they are innovators and are to be punished. Its like is reported by Ibn ul- Qayyim in [Ijtimaa ul-Juyoosh il-Islaamiyyah] and what are the Ash'ariyyah except people of theological rhetoric?
      Imaam Abul-Abbaas ibn Suraij known as 'ash-Shaafi'ee the second' and he was a contemporary of Al-Ash'aree, said: "We do not speak with Ta'weel (interpretation) of the Mu'tazilah, the Ash'arees, the Jahmiyyah, the apostates, the anthropomorphists (Mujassimah and Mushabbihah), the Karraamiyyah and those who declare Allaah to be like His creation (Mukayyifah - those asking about the modality of His attributes). Rather we accept them [the texts about Allaah's attributes] without interpretation (Ta'weel) and we believe in them without declaring any likeness with the creation (Tamtheel)."[3]
      Imaam Abul-Hasan al-Kurjee, one of the Shaafi'ee scholars of the fifth century said: "The Shaafi'ee Imaams have not ceased disdaining and detesting that they should be ascribed to al-Ashariyy and they disassociate themselves from that which al-Ash'aree built his madhhab upon, and they forbid their companions and beloved ones from approaching it, as I have heard from a number of the shaikhs and imaams. He then gave an example of the shaikh of the Shaafi'ees of his time Imaam Aboo Hamid al-Isfaareenee who was known as 'ash-Shaafi'ee the third' saying:
      "The severity of the Shaikh against the people of theoretical knowledge is well known, to the point that he even made a distinction between the principles of the fiqh of ash-Shaafi'ee and the principles of al-Ash'aree. Notes upon this were added by Aboo Bakr ar-Raadhiqaanee and it is with me. He was followed in this by Shaikh Aboo Ishaaq ash-Sheeraazww in his two books, 'al-Lumaa' and 'at-Tabsirah' to the point that if a point of al-Ash'aree agreed with one saying amongst our companions he made distinction and said: "It is the saying of the Ash'ariyyah" and he did not include them amongst the companions of ash-Shaafi'ee. They disdained and avoided them and their madhhab in the principles of fiqh not to mention with regard to the principles of the Religion."[4]
      As is known the author of at-Tahaawiyyah and its explainer were both Hanafees, and at-Tahaawee was a contemporary of al-Ash'aree. He wrote his Aqeedah to explain the Aqeedah of Imaam Abu Haneefah and his companions, and it is very like what is found in Fiqh al-Akbar from him. They report from the Imaam that he clearly states the Kufr (disbelief) of one who says that Allaah - the Most Perfect and Exalted - is not upon the Arsh (throne) or remains silent about it.
      Also his student Aboo Yoosuf declares Bishr al-Maareesee to be a Kaafir, and as is well known the Ash'ariyyah deny Allaah's ascension and deny that He the Most High is above the Arsh (Throne) and it is also well known that their principles were taken from Bishr al-Maareesee!![5]
      The position of the Hanbalees with regard to the Ash'ariyyah is more famous than to need mention. So since Imaam Ahmad declared 'Ibn Kullaab' to be an innovator and ordered to be ostracized, and he was the true founder of the Ash'aree madhhab. The Hanbalees have not ceased to be involved in a long battle with them. Even to the time of the state of Nizaam ul-Mulk in which they behaved presumptuously, and after it the Hanbalees ejected every speaker who mixed anything from the madhhab of the Ash'ariyyah into his speeches. Ibn ul-Qushairi was one of those who experienced this, and because their madhhab had become so widespread, and due to the agreement of the scholars of the state, especially the Hanbalees that he should be opposed, so the Khaleefah al-Qaadir sent out al-I'tiqaad al-Qaadiree which clarified the aqeedah which was binding upon the Ummah in the year 433H.[6]
      And Shaikhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah quotes that when Abdul-Qaadir al-Jeelaanee was asked: "Has there ever been one who was a Walee of Allaah who was upon other than the aqeedah of Ahmad bin Hanbal?" He replied: "That has not occurred and will never occurr."[7]
      Footnotes

      1. Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaimeen - may Allaah protect him - said: "So - for example - the Ash'arees and the Maatooreedees are not considered from Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah in this particular matter (i.e. concerning the Names and Attributes of Allaah). Rather, they oppose what the Prophe (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) and his Companions were upon with regards to accepting the Attributes of Allaah - the Most Perfect - upon their haqeeqah (real meaning). Rather, Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah are those who hold on to what the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) and his Companions were upon, and to the aqeedah of the Salaf - until the Day of Judgement - and they are the Salafees." The Creed of Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree

        The Creed of Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree Author: Abu Hasan al-Ash`aree Source: Al-Ibaanah An usool Ad Diyaanah (prepared by Mustafa al-Mansour) Article ID : AQD060002 - salafipublications.com Abu Hasan al-'Ash'ari (rahimahullaah) said:
        Praise be to Allaah the One, the almighty the glorious, the only one to whom unity is ascribed, the Magnified in praise, whom the attribute of Human beings do not adequately describe. He has neither adversary nor rival, and He is the creator and the restorer, "The Doer of what He wills"- [11:109] He is too exalted to possess consorts or children, too holy to associate with the genera of creation or things corrupt. He has not form capable of expression, nor is a definition of Him by means of a simile possible.
        If anybody says to us, " You have denied the beliefs of the Mu`tazilah, the Qadariyyah, the Jahmiyyahh, the Haruriyyah the Rafidha and the Murji`a; now let us know the beliefs you hold and the religion you follow," the answer is:
        The belief we hold and the religion we follow consists of:
        Holding fast to the book of our Lord, to the Sunnah of our Prophet, and the traditions related on the authority of the Companions and the Successors and the Imaams1 of hadeeth - to that we hold firmly...
        The essence of our belief is that we confess faith in Allaah, His angels, His Books, His Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam)s, the revelation of Allaah, and what the trustworthy have handed down on the authority of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), rejecting none of them.
        We confess that Allaah is One - There is none worthy of worship but He - unique, eternal, possessing neither consort nor child;
        and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), who He sent with the guidance and the real Religion;
        and that Paradise is real and Hell is real ;
        and that there is no doubt regarding the Coming Hour; and that Allaah will raise up all those who are in the graves ;
        and that Allaah (istiwaa) His throne (as He has said, "The Merciful is (istiwaa)on the Throne" - [20:4] ) ;
        and that He has a face (as He has said, "but the Face of thy Lord shall abide resplendent with majesty and glory" - [55:27] ) ;
        And that He has two hands, bila kaifa (without asking how?) (as He has said " I have created with my two hands," - [38:75] and he has said, "nay! Outstretched are both His hands" - [5:69]);
        and that He has an eye, without asking how (as He has said "under Our eyes it floated on" - [54:14] ),
        and that anybody who thinks that the names of Allaah are other than He is in error;
        and that Allaah has Knowledge (as He has said, in His knowledge He sent it down," - [4:164] ), and as He said, "And no female concieveth and bringeth forth without His knowledge" - [35:12] ),
        we also assert that Allaah has hearing and sight, and we do not deny it as the Mu`tazila, the Jahmiyyah, and the Khaarijites deny it;
        And we assert that Allaah has Prowess(Quwwah) (as He has said, " saw they not that Allaah Who created them was mightier than they in Prowess?" -[41:14] );
        and we believe that the Word of Allaah is uncreated, and that He has created nothing without first saying to it, "Be!," And it is "as he has said, "Our word to a thing when we will it is but to say, 'Be!', and it is" - [16:42]),
        and that there is no good or evil on earth save what Allaah wishes: and that things exist by Allaah's wish;
        and that not a single person has the capacity to do anything until Allaah causes him to act,
        and we are not independent of Allaah,
        nor can we pass beyond the range of Allaah's knowledge;
        and that there is no creator save Allaah, and the works of human beings are things created and decreed by Allaah (as He has said, "Allaah has created you and what you make" - [37:94]);
        and that human beings have not the power to create anything, but are them selves created (as He has said, " Is there a creator other than Allaah?" - [35:3], and as He has said, "they create nothing, but are themselves created," - [16:20] and as he said, "Shall He who creates be as who creates not?," - [16:17] and as He has said, "were they created by nothing or were they themselves the creators?," - [52:35] for this is mentioned in Allaah's Book frequently);
        and that Allaah favours the Believers by granting them obedience to Him, is gracious to them, considers them, does what is salutary for them, guides them;
        whereas He causes the Disbelievers to stray, does not guide them, does not give them the grace to believe".
        As the deviators and rebels think for if He were gracious to them and did what salutary for them they would be sound;
        and if He guided them, they would be guided; as He has said, "He whom Allaah guides is the guided and they whom be misleads will be the lost" - [7:177],
        and that Allaah has power to do what is salutary for the infidels and be gracious to them, that they may become believers, nevertheless He wills that they be infidels, as He knows; and that He forsakes them and seals up their hearts;
        and that good and evil are dependant upon the general and the particular decrees of Allah, His sweet and His bitter; and we know that what passes us by was not to befall us, and what befalls us was not to pass us by;
        and that human beings do not control for themselves what is hurtful or what is helpful, except what Allaah wishes;
        and that we ought to commit our affairs to Allaah and assert our complete need of and dependence upon Him.
        We believe, too, that the Qur`an is the uncreated word of Allaah, and that he who believes that the Qur`an is created is an infidel.
        We hold that Allaah will be seen in the next world by sight (as the moon is seen on the night it is full, so shall the faithful see Him, as we are told in the traditions that come down on the authority of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam);
        and we believe that the infidels will be veiled from Him when the faithful see Him in Paradise (as Allaah has said, "Yea, they shall be shut out as by a veil from their Lord on that day" - [83:15],
        and that Musa asked Allaah for the sight of Him ion this world, and "Allaah manifested Himself to the mountain" and "turned it to dust," - [7:139], and taught Musa by it that he should not see Him in this world.
        It is our opinion that we ought not to declare a single one of the people of the Qibla an infidel for a sin of which he is guilty, such as fornication or theft or the drinking of wine, as the Kharijites hold, thinking that such people are infidels;
        but we believe that he who commits any these mortal sins, such as fornication or theft or the like presumptuously declaring it lawful and not acknowledging that is forbidden is an infidel.
        We believe that Islam is more extensive than faith, and that faith is not the whole of Islam.
        We hold that Allaah changes men's hearts, and that their hearts are between two of Allaah's fingers, and that Allaah will place the heavens on a finger and the earth on a finger, as we are told in the tradition that comes down on the authority of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam).
        We hold that we ought not to relegate any of the Monotheists, or those who hold fast to the faith, to Paradise or to Hell, save him in whose favour the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) of Allaah has borne witness concerning Paradise;
        and we hope that sinners will attain to Paradise, but we fear that they will be punished in Hell.
        We believe that Allaah, by the intercession of Muhammad, Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), will bring forth a people from Hell after they have been burned to ashes, in accordance with what we are told in the traditions related on the authority of Allaah's messenger.
        We believe in the punishment of the grave, and the Pool, and hold that the Scales are real, and the Bridge is real, and the resurrection after death is real, and that Allaah will line up human beings at the Station, and settle the account with the faithful.
        We believe that faith consists of words and deeds, and is subject to increase and decrease;
        and we receive the authentic traditions regarding it related on the authority of the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) of Allaah, which the trustworthy have transmitted, one just man from another, until the tradition goes back to the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) of Allaah,
        we believe in affection towards our forebears in faith, whom Allaah chose for the company of His Prophet, we praise them with the praise wherewith Allaah praised them, and are attached to them all.
        We believe that the excellent Imaam, after the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) of Allaah, is Abu Bakr the Veracious, and that Allaah strengthened the Religion by him and gave him success against the renegades,
        and the Muslims promoted him to the imamate just as the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) of Allaah made him leader of prayer, and they all named him the caliph of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam);
        then after him came `Umar Ibn Al-Kattab; then Uthmaan bin Affaan (those who fought with him wrongfully and unrighteously); then `Ali Ibn Abi taalib; wherefore these are the Imaams after the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) of Allaah, and their caliphate is a caliphate of Prophecy.
        We bear witness concerning Paradise in favour of the ten in whose favour the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) of Allaah bore witness to it, and we are attached to all the Companions of the Prophet, and avoid what was disputed among them.
        We hold that the four Imaam are orthodox, divinely guided, excellent caliphs, unmatched by others in excellence.
        We accept all the traditions for which for which the traditionists vouch: the descent in to the lower heavens, and the Lord's saying, "Is the there any who has a request? Is there any who ask forgiveness?," and the other things they relate and vouch for; dissenting from what the deviators and followers of error assert.
        We rely, in that wherein we differ, upon our Lord's book, and the sunnah of our Prophet, and the unanimous consent (Ijma`) of the Muslims and what it signifies;
        and we do not introduce into Allaah's religion innovations that Allaah does not allow,
        nor we do we believe of Allaah what we do not know.
        We believe that Allaah will come in the day of resurrection (as He has said, "and thy Lord shall come and the Angels rank on rank" - [80:23]);
        and that Allaah is near His servants, even as He wishes (as He has said, "We are nearer to him then his Jugular vein," - [50:15] and as He said, "the He came nearer and approached and was at the distance of to bows or even closer" - [53:8,9]).
        It belongs to the our religion to observe the Friday Assembly, and the feasts, and the remaining prayers and public devotions under the leadership of every pious man or impious (as it is related of `AbdAllaah ibn Umar that he used to pray behind al-Hajjaj ibn-yusuf);
        and we believe that the wiping of the sandals is a sunnah at home and in travel, contrarily to the belief of anybody who denies it;
        and we approve prayer for the welfare of the imaams of the Muslims, and the confession of their imamate; and we regard it as error on anybody's part to "going out" against them when they have clearly abandoned rectitude;
        and we believe in abstinence from "going out" against them with the sword, and abstinence from fighting in civil commotions (fitnah).
        We confess the going forth of Antichrist (ad-Dajjaal), as it is contained in the tradition related on the authority of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam).
        We believe in the punishment of the grave, and in Munkar and Nakir, and their interrogation of those who are buried in the graves.
        We accept the hadeeth of Ascension (mi`raj) and regard as authentic many of the visions of sleep, and confess there are interpretations to them.
        We approve alms on behalf of the Muslim dead, and prayer for their welfare; and we believe that Allaah helps them by it.
        We accept it as true that there are sorcerers and sorcery in the world, and that sorcery exists in the world.
        We believe in praying for those of the people of the Qibla who are dead, the pious and the impious, and in the lawfulness of being their heirs.
        We confess that Paradise and Hell are created;
        and that he who dies or is slain at his appointed term;
        and that sustenance is from Allaah who gives it to His creatures in the permitted and the forbidden;
        and that Satan whispers to man and causes him to doubt and infects him, contrarily to the belief of the Mu`tazilah and the Jahmiyyahh (as Allaah has said, "they who swallow down usury shall arise in the resurrection only as he ariseth who Satan hath infected by his touch," - [2:276] and as he has said, "against the mischief of the stealthily withdrawn whisperer, who wispereth in man's breast-against jinn and men". - [114:46]).
        We believe that Allaah can design particularly for the just the signs he manifests to them.
        Our belief regarding the children of the polytheists is that Allaah will kindle a fire for them in the next world, and then will say to them, "rush into it!," as the tradition tells us concerning it.
        We hold that Allaah knows what human beings are doing, and what they are going to do, what has been, what is, and how what is not would have been if it had been.
        We believe in obedience to the Imaams and in the sincere counsel of the Muslims.
        We approve separation from every innovation tendency, and the avoidance of the people of straying impulses.

          Abu Hasan al'Ash'ariyy's Final Book 'Al-Ibaanah'
          Abu Hasan al'Ash'ariyy's Final Book 'Al-Ibaanah' Author: Prepared by Abu 'Iyad as-Salafi Source: Foundations of the Sunnah (Salafi Publications 1997) Article ID : AQD060001 - salafipublications.com The Scholars of the Salaf have exhibited an outstanding role in foiling the plans of the enemies of Islaam - in all their different sects, and the varying doubts they propagate. And that, by which the Islaamic Aqeedah was put to trial with in its very first period was but the various madhaahib and new ideas which entered it by way of philosophy and theological rhetoric.
          The Mu'tazilah played a big role in distorting the texts of the Sharee'ah from the Qur'aan and the Sunnah and plotting against the Scholars of the Salaf and attacking their honour. The most famous of such plots is the trial of Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal - may Allaah have mercy upon him - who remained firm in that trial and in refuting their doubts falsifying their falsehood - he and the other Scholars of the Salaf of this Ummah, such as Imaaam Bukhaaree, ad-Daarimee, Ibn Qutaibah, Ibn Mandah and others besides them.
          And Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy in the first part of his life, used to be a Mu'taziliyy since he was brought up at the hands of Abu Alee al-Jubaa'ee the Shaikh of the Mu'tazilah of Basrah in his time.
          And Allaah willed goodness for Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy and granted him success in taking from the Book and the Sunnah and abandoning the madhhab of the Mu'tazilah. So he affirmed for Allaah whatever Allaah affirmed for himself and whatever His Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) affirmed for Him in his Sunnah.
          The Book 'al-Ibaanah' - Abu Hasan al-Ash'aris Last Book

          And this has been recorded in his book called Al-Ibaanah an Usool id-Diyaanah. However, those who ascribed themselves to the madhhab of Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy continued taking from the madhhab of Ibn Kullaab and passed it on to those who ascribed themselves to Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy, generation after generation. The truth, however, is what the scholars testify to, those in whose honesty, integrity and impartiality there is no doubt, that the aqeedah which Abu Hasan al'Ash'ariyy held and worshipped Allaah with, is the aqeedah which he has affirmed in his book Al-Ibaanah and that this was the last of his books in which the matter of his aqeedah was settled.
          In the present time, many ascribe themselves to Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy and call themselves Ash'ariyyah, claiming that they are holding fast to the aqeedah he was upon, especially in the matters of the Attributes of Allaah. However, the truth is that they have not taken the aqeedah that he embraced at the end of his life and which is propounded in his two books al-Ibaanah an Usool id-Diyaanah and al-Maqaalaat ul-Islaamiyyeen.
          What is more strange, however is their claim that Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy wrote his book al-Ibaanah out of taqiyyah (deception) and as an attempt to outwit the Hanbalees, fearing them, for his life.
So they exposed the falsehood of those lies and slanders against this esteemed scholar and explained that taqiyah and nifaaq are not the characteristics of the scholars and that Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy is far removed from that.
          Ar-Rahmaan has ascended (istawaa) the Throne" [Soorah Taa Haa 20:5]
          "And that He has two Hands, without asking how, just as He has said:
          I created you with My (Two) Hands [Soorah Taa Haa 20:75]
          and as He has said:
          But [both] His Hands are outstretched" [Soorah Maa'idah 5:64]
          "And they affirm both Hearing and Seeing for Him and they do not negate that from Allaah as the Mu'tazilah have negated it."
          "And they affirm the ahaadeeth which have come from the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam): "Verily, Allaah descends to the lowest heaven and says: Is there anyone who seeks forgiveness" in the manner in which it has come from the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam)"
          "And they see the necessity of following the Salaf from the Scholars of the Religion who do not innovate into their religion that for which Allaah has given no permission."
          "And they say the Qur'aan is the Speech of Allaah, it is not created."
          And he affirmed all of that which the Salaf us-Saalih affirmed regarding the Attributes of Allaah and other matters of aqeedah and finished by saying: "This is a summarisation of what they [the People of the Hadeeth and the Sunnah] order with, employ and deem necessary [to believe in]. And everything that has been mentioned from their speech, we speak likewise and tend towards it."
          And whoever desires more can refer to his aforementioned books al-Ibaanah and al-Maqaalaat.
          As for those who have ascribed the book al-Ibaanah to Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy and have testified that it was his last book concerning aqeedah then they are numerous and amongst them:
          • al-Haafidh Ibn Asaakir in Tabyeenul Kadhabul-Muftaree (p.152) which is a refutation of al-Ahwaazee,al-Bayhaqee in al-I'tiqaad (p.31),Imaam adh-Dhahabee in al-Uluww (no.276) and
          • Ibn ul-'Imaad in Shadhraat udh-Dhahab (p.303).

          • Al-Imaam al-Haafidh Abul-Abbaas Ahmad bin Thaabit at-Turqee,Abu Uthmaan Ismaa'eel as-Saaboonee,Imaam ul-Qurraa Abu Alee Hasan bin Alee bin Ibraaheem al-Faarisee,al-Imaam al-Faqeeh Abul-Fath Nasr al-Maqdisee,al-Imaam al-Haafidh Abul-Qaasim Alee bin Hasan bin Hibatullaah ash-Shaafi'ee,al-Faqeeh Abul-Ma'aalee Majallee,
          • and al-Haafidh Abu Muhammad bin Alee al-Baghdaadee.

          Notes

          1. From the books I'tiqaad Ahl us-Sunnah Ashaabul-Hadeeth Sharh Jumlatu Maa Hakaahu Anhum Abu Hasan al-A'shariyy wa Qarrarahu fee Maqaalaatihi by Muhammad Abdur-Rahmaan al-Khamees and adh-Dhabb an Abee Hasan al-Ash'ariyy of Abul-Qaasim Abdul-Malik bin Eesaa bin Darbaas.
          2. Ibn Darbaas al-Qaadee Kamaal ud-Deen Abu Haamid Muhammad bin Qaadee al-Qudaat Sadr ud-Deen Abdul-Malik bin Eesaa al-Maaraanee al-Misree ash-Shaafi'ee ad-Dareer, born in the year 576H.
          He said, commencing his book, adh-Dhabb an Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy:
          "To proceed: Know O community of Brothers - may Allaah grant success to us and to you in the straight and upright Deen and guide us all to the Straight Path - that the book al-Ibaanah an Usool id-Diyaanah, which the Imaam Abu Hasan Alee bin Ismaa'eel al-Ash'ariyy authored is the one in which his affair [his aqeedah and his position] was settled with respect to that which he held as his aqeedah and worshipped Allaah - the Sublime and Exalted - with, after his return from I'tizaal [the madhhab of the Mu'tazilah] by the Grace of Allaah and His Benevolence. And every saying [or treatise] which are ascribed to him now and which oppose that which is in al-Ibaanah, then he turned back from that and declared himself to be innocent of it in front of Allaah - the Sublime. How can it be otherwise, when he is stated in it the religion with which he worships Allaah - the Sublime - which he reports and establishes himself upon the way of the Sahaabah, the Taabi'een and the Scholars of Hadeeth, those who have passed, and the saying of Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal - may Allaah be pleased with them all. And that it [i.e. his religion] is that which the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger points to. Is it then permissible for it to be said that he turned back from that to other than it? To what exaclty, did he turn back to, and which you can see [evidently]? Did he turn back from the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet of Allaah, to the opposite of that which the Sahaabah, the Taabi'een and the Scholars of Hadeeth, who have passed away, were upon? And with his knowledge that that was their madhhab? He narrated this [i.e. his aqeedah in al-Ibaanah] from them and by my life, how can that which does not befit the common Muslims be ascribed to the Scholars of the Religion? Or can it be said that he was ignorant of what he was relating from the Salaf who have passed... ... this is something which a just person can never imagine and suspect, and none but an arrogant person and a profligate can hold this..." And then he continues to mention those who have affirmed the ascription of the book al-Ibaanah to Abu Hasan al-Ash'ariyy as listed above. Refer to the book adh-Dhabb an Abee Hasan al-Ash'ariyy, checked and verified by Alee bin Muhammad bin Naasir al-Faqeehee (p.97-108)

            The Attribute of Eyes for Allaah

            source: salafitalk.net
            The point that Ibn ul-Qayyim - may Allaah have mercy upon him - explains in Ijtimaa ul-Juyoosh and in Mukhtasaarus-Sawaa'iq (1/34-37) that Allaah has two Eyes. Then he explains that this is the position of the Salaf. He quotes Abu Hasan al-Ash'aree who states:

            "And He has two eyes without any mention of how, just as He said: Floating under Our Eyes [Soorah Qamar 54:14]"(1)

            Ibn ul-Qayyim says: "So al-Ash'aree and others do not understand from the plural: a'yun (eyes) many eyes, nor from the plural 'aidee' (hands) many hands..."(2)

            Ibn Hajr also mentions(3) that al-Bayhaqee mentions a witness to the hadeeth of Abu Hurairah - [i.e. the hadeeth reported by Aboo Daawood that the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) recited Soorah an-Nisaa, aayah 58 and read up to: 'Sameean Baseeraa', and placed his thumb on his ear and the one next to it upon his eye](4) - from the hadeeth of Uqbah bin Aamir: I heard Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) say upon the minbar: "Our Lord certainly hears and sees" and he pointed to his two eyes" Ibn Hajr says: Its isnaad is hasan.(5)

            That Allaah the Most High has Two Eyes - in the manner that befits Him and without any resemblance to the creation - is also stated by ad-Daarimee in his reply upon Bishr al-Maarisee and by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Kitaabut-Tawheed and by al-Laalikaa'ee in Sharh Usool il-I'tiqaad.

            Ibn Khuzaymah after mentioning four verses in the Qur'aan containing a mention of eye in the singular and the plural, under the chapter "Chapter: Mention of the Affirmation of Eye for Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic", brings the following narrations:

            Muhammad bin Yahyaa narrated to us, he said: Abdullaah bin Yazeed al-Muqree narrated to us, he said: Hurmulah bin `Imraan at-Tajeebee narrated to us, from Aboo Yoonus - Saleem Jubayr - the Mawlaa of Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, that he said regarding the verse, "Verily! Allah commands that you should render back the trusts to those to whom they are due; and that when you judge between men, you judge with justice. Verily, how excellent is the teaching which He (Allah) gives you! Truly, Allah is Ever All*Hearer, All*Seer." (An-Nisa 4:58), "I saw the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam), place his thumb upon his ear and his finger next to it upon his eye", Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said, "I saw Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) doing that". (Kitaab ut-Tawheed of Ibn Khuzaymah, Maktabah ar-Rushd 1/97).

            And then with another chain of narration to Aboo Yoonus who said, "I heard Abu Hurayrah repeat this verse, "Verily! Allah commands that you should render back the trusts to those to whom they are due..." he recited it until he reached, "All-Hearer, All-Seer", and he placed his thumb upon his ear and the one that was next to it upon his eye, and he said, "This is how I saw the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) reciting and placing his two fingers". (Kitaab ut-Tawheed of Ibn Khuzaymah, 1/98).

            So the Salafees follow and accept the aqeedah of the Salaf and there is no contradiction or ta'weel here.

            Secondly: it is clear that the real tashbeeh (making resemblances for Allaah) lies in the heart of this filthy Jahmee and others like him since when they hear the Attributes of Allaah being mentioned such as Hand, Face and the likes, they are disturbed, confused, unsettled - nay - bewildered. This is because their hearts cannot but make analogies for Allaah from His creation when they hear these Attributes and so they are forced to deny them, claiming thereby that they are declaring Allaah free of defects (tanzeeh) and that it is tashbeeh (anthropomorphism) to affirm them. As for the Salaf - those whose hearts Allaah has guided and has kept safe - and those upon their way, they affirm all the Attributes as they have come, without ta'weel, or tashbeeh as has been quoted previously from them.

            As Imaam al-Juwaynee (d. 438H) said: "And Allaah expanded my chest about the state of those Shaikhs who made ta'weel of al-Istiwaa to isteelaa ... and it is my belief that they do not understand the Attributes of the Lord - the Most High - except with what befits the creation. Thus they do not understand al-Istiwaa of Allaah as it truly befits Him ... so this is why they distort the words from its proper context and deny what Allaah has described Himself with. And we shall mention the explanation of that if Allaah wills." Risaalah Ithbaatul-Istiwaa wal-Fawqiyyah (p.176-183) For a longer quotation of his words refer to the end of Chapter 3 of 'Foundations of the Sunnah' of Imaam Ahmad - On the falsehood of Ta'weel. Imaam al-Juwaynee was a former Ash'aree who retracted from the Ash'aree madhhab and followed the path of the Salaf.

            NOTES

            (1) This is said by Ash'aree in al-Maqaalaat (p.290) and al-Ibaanah (p.9) and al-Moojiz.

            (2 The aforementioned Jahmee, in his vilification of the Ulamaa of the Salaf, said:

            "On page 97 of the same work, Ibn ul-Qayyim also mentions the hadeeth of Bukhaaree warning of the Anti-Christ - al-Maseeh ad-Dajjaal - who in the last days will come forth and claim to be God, of which the Prophet, Allaah bless him and give him peace, said: "Allaah has sent no Prophet except that he warned his people of the one-eyed liar and that he is one-eyed and that your Lord is not one-eyed and that he shall have unbeliever - kaafir - written between his two eyes". Ibn al-Qayyim comments, "The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) negated the attribute of one-eyedness (meaning of Allaah) which is proof that Allaah literally has two eyes". Now a primer in logical fallacies could have told Ibn al-Qayyim that the negation of a quality - one-eyedness - does not entail the affirmation of its contrary - two-eyedness. And example of what is called by the logicians, the "black and white fallacy". For example, to say "if it is not white it is therefore black, if you are not my friend you must be my enemy..." and so on. So what he attempts to prove here does not show the kind of anthropomorphism he is trying to promote." End of the Jahmee's words -Alhamdulillaah.

            It is said in response to the Jahmee:

            Firstly: "Ayyuhal Jahool, bil-ilmi mawsoof wa bil-jahli mushtahir - (O Ignoramus, with knowledge described but with ignorance notorious)

            Secondly: Or alternatively: "...bil aqli mawsoof wa bil-jahli mushtahir." (...with intelligence described but with ignorance notorious).

            Thirdly: "In the language of the Arabs it is possible to annex a noun in its singular, dual and plural form and this is determined by the nature of the noun to which it is being annexed. If that to which a singular noun is being annexed is also singular, then they leave the annexed noun in its singular form. And if they annex a noun to a plural personal pronoun then it is better to put the annexed noun in the plural form as well such as in the saying of the Most Perfect:

            Floating under our Eyes (a'yuninaa) [54:14]

            and in His saying:

            Do they not see that We have created for them of what Our Hands (aideenaa) have created...[36:71]

            And if they annex a noun to a dual noun [or a dual personal pronoun] then it is more clear and eloquent in their language to put the annexed noun into the plural form as well such as in the saying of Allaah - the Most Perfect:

            If you two (i.e. Aa'ishah and Hafsah - may Allaah be pleased with them both) turn in repentance to Allaah, (it will be better for you), your hearts (quloobukumaa) are indeed so inclined... [66:4]

            So in this verse two people are being addressed and they are but two hearts, but Allaah - the Most Perfect - has used the word quloob, which is in the plural form. Therefore, let not the listener be confused by the saying: "We see you with our eyes (naraaka bi a'yuninaa) and we shall take you with our hands (na'khudhuka bi aideenaa)" - and no single man on the face of the earth understands from this many eyes or many hands in any aspect whatsoever - and Allaah knows best." Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan - may Allaah protect him - in his Sharh ul-Aqeedatil Waasitiyyah (p.52) and the like of this is also mentioned by Ibn al-Qayyim. Refer also to 'Al-Kawaashif al-Jaliyyah an Ma'aani al-Waasitiyyah' (pp.253-254) of Abdul-Azeez al-Muhammad as-Salmaan.

            Fourthly: It is clear in his vilification of Ibn al-Qayyim - and in his use of the knowledge of logical fallacies and while being grossly ignorant of the language of the Arabs - that the Jahmee's way is but the way of Ahl ul-Kalaam (the People of Theological Rhetoric and Innovated Speech) and had ash-Shaafi'ee - may Allaah have mercy upon him - been present he would have enforced his ruling upon this Jahmee: "My ruling regarding the people of theological rethoric is that they should be beaten with palm leaves and shoes and be paraded amongst the kinsfolk and the tribes with it being announced: This is the reward of the one who abandons the Book and the Sunnah and turns to theological rhetoric (kalaam)." Sharh Aqeedat it-Tahaawiyyah of Ibn Abi al-Izz (p.75).

            (3) Al-Fath (13/373)

            (4) Abu Daawood (3/1324) and it is saheeh

            (5) It has already preceded that the way of Ahl us-Sunnah in the issue of the Attributes of Allaah is to affirm whatever has been narrated from the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) in describing Allaah the Exalted from the Authentic Narrations - those reported by trustworthy and reliable narrators. And they affirm whatever comes through these narrations without ta'teel (denying the meaning), tahreef (distorting the meanings), tasbheeh (likening to the creation) and takyeef (asking 'how').

            As for the repellers and rejectors of the narrations - as has been explained before - this occurs from them since they cannot understand Allaah's Attributes except in the manner that befits the creation. So likening to the creation is what their hearts fall into upon hearing the likes of these narrations mentioning the Attributes of Allaah - the Most High . The tashbeeh began and occurred in their hearts and the Ahl us-Sunnah are free from it. But then they, due to a further sickness in their hearts then accuse the Ahl us-Sunnah of being anthropomorphists simply because they affirm for Allaah what Allaah and His Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) affirmed for Him, without ta'teel, ta'weel, takyeef or tashbeeh?!

              Affirmation of the Attribute of Face for Allaah
              Affirmation of the Attribute of Face for Allaah Author: Abu Iyaad Article ID : AQD060004 - salafipublications.com The Face of Allaah is one of Allaah’s Attributes which is true and real, just like all the other attributes that have been reported in the Book and the Sunnah, and it, like the others, has been repeatedly affirmed by the Salaf. The exact nature of His Face, like all the other attributes is unknown, and in this regard the statement of Imaam Maalik constitutes the scales by which all of attributes are understood, "Istiwaa is known, but its modality (kaif) is unknown, having faith in it is obligatory and asking about it (i.e. about its true nature is an innovation". So this is the methodology of the Salaf with respect to this Attribute.
              However, the Jahmiyyah in the present times (such as al-Kawtharee, al-Bootee, as-Saqqaaf, al-Kabbaani, al-Habashi) and those who have the affectations of Jahm Ibn Safwaan deny the Attribute of Face and resort to heretical interpretations.
              With respect to this particular attribute, the practice of the innovators is only too well known. To strike the texts of the Book and the Sunnah against each other and to selectively quote that which agrees to their desires.
              ONE: The explanation of al-Khattaabee, al-Bayhaqee, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Uthaimeen and others:
              Allaah has ascribed certain characteristics to His Face, so He said, "Everyone upon the Earth will perish, [but] shall remain the Face of your Lord, Full of Majesty and Honour" [55:26-27]. So the description "Dhul-Jalaali wal-Ikraam (Full of Majesty and Honour)" is related to "the Face…" since it is in the nominative case (raf’). This is different to His saying, "Blessed be the Name of Your Lord, the Owner of Majesty and Honour", so in this verse the description "Dhil-Jalaali wal-Ikraam (Owner of Majesty and Honour)" is related to "Your Lord…" since it is in the genitive as is "Your Lord…"
              So it is clear from this that Allaah has the attribute of Face, and this Face too has Attributes, such as in this verse. And this is undeniable.
              Then from the Sunnah, is the saying of the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), "His Veil is made of light and if He was to uncover it, the splendors/radiances (subuhaat) of His Face, would destroy everything of His creation that His Sight would reach." [Muslim, from Abu Moosa al-Ash’aree]
              So it is clear from this that the Face, which is an Attribute of Allaah, also has attributes. In addition this hadeeth also affirms the Attribute of Sight for Allaah.
              From this fact, the falsehood of the one who claims that Face refers to ‘reward’ or other such false interpolations can be witnessed. For how is it possible for ‘reward’ to be described by ‘Majesty and Honour’ and how is it possible for it to have ‘splendors/radiances’ that destroy everything in sight? And which of the Salaf have spoken of this? So the challenge to the Jahmiyyah is, apply your interpolations of Face to every mention of Face in the Book and the Sunnah and see where that leads you?
              TWO: Then to establish this further, is the variety of supplications in which the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) seeks refuge in the Face of Allaah and how he (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) separates between the essence of Allaah and the Face of Allaah in the same supplication.
              So amongst such supplications are:
              "I seek refuge in Your Noble Face, that You lead me astray, there is none worthy of worship save you…" [Abu Dawood and others].
              In relation to the verse, "Say (O Muhammad) He has power to send punishment over you from above" [6:65], the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) said, "I seek refuge in Your face" [Bukhaaree, in Kitaabut-Tawheed].
              "I seek refuge in Allaah the Mighty (al-‘Adheem) and in His Noble Face and His Eternal Power for Shaytaan the Accursed" [Abu Dawood].
              So is it then plausible for a Muslim to seek refuge in a Face which in reality is ‘reward’ or ‘dominion’? For these are but created things and no Muslim seeks refuge in something created. Ibn al-Qayyim mentions concerning the third supplication above, "… so consider how he made a distinction between seeking refuge in the Essence (Dhaat) of Allaah and between His Noble Face. This is a clear refutation of the one who claims that Face is the Essence itself and of the one who claims that it is something created (i.e. other than Allaah)".
              This is because those things that are annexed to Allaah are of two types. Those things separate from Him, from His creation, such as al-Bait (the House of Allaah), an-Naaqah (the She Camel of Allaah), al-Abd (the Servant of Allaah) etc. Or those things that are not independent of Him, but rather from His Essence such as knowledge, life, seeing, hearing, power, speech etc. So when these are annexed to Him then it is an annexation which signifies real attributes, it is not one that signifies created things for this is falsehood. So when this is the case, how is it possible for a Muslim to seek refuge in something created? So from this the falsehood is made clear!
              THREE: Ibn al-Qayyim explains regarding the verse "Wherever you may turn, you will find the Face/Countenance of Allaah", then some of the Salaf have interpreted it to Face to mean the ‘qiblah’ of Allaah. Then this is something that is acceptable for this particular verse. But then is it correct for this meaning to be applied to other verses in which Face is mentioned? So of what benefit would this explanation be regarding the saying of Allaah, "[but] shall remain the Face of your Lord, Full of Majesty and Honour" [55:27] and "Except only the desire to seek the Face of His Lord, the Most High" [92:20] and "We feed you only for the Face of Allaah" [76:9]?
              And what is correct regarding the saying of Allaah "Wherever you may turn, you will find the Face/Countenance of Allaah" is that it is just like the statements of Allaah in all the other verses in which Face is mentioned. In all the places in the Book and the Sunnah that Face has been mentioned, it has been attributed to Allaah in the same way, with the same meaning. It does not have two meanings that are opposed to each other. However there is an exception with respect to that which comes in Surah al-Baqarah. In this verse, the explanation that it refers to qiblah (direction) is not singled out [as the only understanding]. Rather it can also be applied to the Face of Allaah literally (haqeeqatan). And this is because this verse was revealed with respect to travelling. So when a person prays and he errs in finding the right direction, then wherever He turns he will be facing Allaah. And the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) said that "When a person stands for prayer, then Allaah is in front of him" [Bukharee and Muslim]. This is because He is high above His creation, ascended upon His Throne and He encompasses the whole of creation. So wherever a servant turns Allaah is in front of him. The Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) said, "Indeed Allaah has commanded you with prayer, so when you pray do not turn [to the left or to the right] for Allaah directs His Face to the face of His servant in his prayer so long as he does not turn away" [Ahmad and Tirmidhee, Hasan-Saheeh]. And also his (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) saying, "When the servant performs ablution well and stands to perform the prayer, Allaah turns to Him with His Face…" [Ibn Maajah, all of its narrators are thiqah]".
              So from the above, it is clear that the verse of Surah Baqarah is just like the other verses, even if from one aspect, the meaning can be understood to be qiblah (direction).
              However, it is not possible to apply the same explanation to all the other texts that have attributed Face to Allaah the Most High. And in this is a challenge to the Jahmiyyah : Apply your interpretations to the other places in the Book and the Sunnah where Face is mentioned and see where that leads you?
              FOUR: Regarding the statement of Allaah the Most High, "For those who do good is the best (i.e. Paradise) and something more [that is better]…" 10:26], then the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) said in explanation of this, "Looking at His Face, the Most High" [Muslim 1/163]. Therefore, the one who denies the attribute of Face for Allaah then he is claiming that the Believers in Paradise will be looking at something imaginary, and in this he has made a great error and invented a great lie. And the Companions, the Taabi’een, the Four Imaams, and all of the great Imaams of the Salaf are agreed that the Believers shall see the Face of their Lord in Paradise. Imaam ad-Daraqutnee (d. 385H) said: "Muhammad bin Mukhlad narrated to us: Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Umar bin al-Hakam, Abu Hasan ibn al-Attaar said: I heard Muhammad bin Mis'ab, the Worshipper saying: "Whoever claims that You do not speak and that You will not be seen in the Hereafter is a disbeliever in Your Face and he does not know You. I testify that You are above the Throne, above the seven heavens - not as Your enemies, the heretical apostates (Zanaadiqah) say." Kitaab us-Sifaat of ad-Daraqutnee (no. 64)

              FIVE: Concerning the interpretation that Face refers to His Essence (Dhaat). Then if it is meant by this that it refers to His Essence while at the same time affirming a Face for him, then this is acceptable. For Face is an attribute of His Essence and it is not something created or separate from Him. Hence, if everything will perish save His Face, then it is understood from this that His Dhaat will not perish either, it will remain and this is because Face is an Attribute of the Essence, not created and separate from it. However if it is meant that it refers to His Essence while at the same time denying the attribute of Face for Him, then this is falsehood as has been made clear from the above. And based upon this we can understand the statements of those scholars who explain that Face refers to His Essence in certain verses of the Qur’aan. So there is no contradiction between what they say and between the fact that Allaah has an Attribute of Face.
              Ibn Hajar in Fath ul-Bari, in explanation of the verse "Everything shall perish except His Face" [28:88], explains the statement of Imaam Bukhaaree in his Kitaabut Tafseer of his Saheeh, "… except His Face, except His dominion, (illaa mulkahu)" saying,
              "In the narration of an-Nasafi there occurs ‘Ma’mar said’ and then he mentioned the above. This Ma’mar is Abu ‘Ubaidah ibn al-Muthnaa, and these are his words taken from his book ‘Majaaz ul-Qur’aan’, however with the wording ‘except He’. At-Tabari has quoted the same from some of the linguists and al-Faraa mentioned the same. Ibn at-Teen and Abu ‘Ubaidah said, ‘except His Face, meaning His Majesty’. And it has been said ‘except He alone’, as you say ‘May Allaah ennoble your face’ meaning ‘may Allaah ennoble you’."
              So here, some of the scholars are of the opinion that Face here refers to the Essence, and there is no problem with this as has proceeded and nor does it negate the Attribute of Face for Allaah.
              Now in case anyone tries to argue (in the favour of ta’wil) using this statement of Imaam Bukhaaree, which at best is indecisive, then what would be his reply to the fact that Imaam Bukhaaree affirms the Attribute of Face in his Kitaab ut-Taweed at the end of his Saheeh, also called ar-Raddu ‘alal-Jahmiyyah (Refutation of the Jahmiyyah), using as evidence the very same verse as above [28:88]!!!
              Chapter: The Statement of Allaah, "Everything shall perish save His Face".
              Narrated Jabir bin Abdullaah, "When this verse, ‘Say (O Muhammad) He has power to send punishment on you from above’ [6:65], was revealed, the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said, ‘I seek refuge with Your Face’. Allaah revealed, ‘Or from underneath your feet’ [6:65], the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said, ‘I seek refuge with Your Face’. Then Allaah revealed ‘Or to cover you with confusion or party strife!’ [6:65], then the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallaam) said, ‘This is easier’."
              And here Imaam Bukhaaree affirms, without doubt, the Attribute of Face, just as he brought narrations in affirmation of Hand, Eyes, Self (Nafs), His Speech, His being above the Throne and many of the other attributes that the Jahmiyyah denied. So this puts an end to the argument adduced from his Kitaab ut-Tafseer.
              In addition, the arguments presented above would also apply. Try imposing these such isolated explanations that you use for denying the Attribute of Face to all those occurrences of the mention of the Face in the Book and the Sunnah and see where that leads you?! Inconsistency and mere falsehood!!

                        The Ash`aris along with the Maturidis form the two schools of doctrine (`aqida) in Islam. These two schools have represented the doctrine of the vast majority of Muslims for over a thousand years. Towering scholars of Islam like Imam al-Bayhaqi, Imam al-Nawawi, Imam Ibn Hajar, and Imam al-Suyuti (Allah be well pleased with them) were all Ash`aris.

                        Ahl al-Sunna/Sunni (traditional/orthodox/mainstream) Islam is represented by the four schools (madhhabs) - Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi`i, Hanbali - in jurisprudence (fiqh), by the two schools - Maturidi and Ash`ari - in beliefs (`aqida), and by the various orders (tariqas) of Tasawwuf/Sufism, the Islamic science of the purification of the heart.

                        The articles posted by Sangar are all from Wahhabi/"Salafi" sources. Wahhabis are opposed to Sunni (Ash`ari and Maturidi) doctrine because they, the Wahhabis, are anthropomorphists who liken Allah Most High to creatures, while Sunnis (Ash`aris and Maturidis) reject anthropomorphism and stricly adhere to the Qur'anic doctrine that "there is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the One that hears and sees (all things)" (42:11).

                        These articles are often full of misquotes, misinterpretations of texts, and outright lies. We should not busy ourselves entertaining these arguments. The `Aqida Tahawiyya is a sufficient text for knowing basic Muslim doctrine (`aqida).

                          How many articles can these wahabis find that were written by ulama before the start of this wahabi movement that are against Ash`aris and Maturidis? majority of their articles are written by bin baaz, albaani, uthaymeen and a few other people (u of Medinah grads).

                            Was Imam Abu Haneefah an Ash'ari or Maturidi? Was Imaam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal any of those things? Was Imaam Maalik an Ash'ari? Was Imaam Shafi'i a Maturidi?

                            How come this creed of innovators, Ash'ariyyah and Maturidiyyah were invented at least 300 years later?

                            Why didn't eny of the companions of the prophet sal allahu alayhi wasallam ever claim such nonsense and negate names and tributes of allah?

                            And why did Abu' Hassan al Ash'ari himself changed his mind and declared his previous position regarding creed to be false? Why did Abul Hassan al Ash'ari declare that he is following the same Aqeedah as Imaam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal?

                            If you could answer any of these questions with decent answers and reference I can check for myself, I will become an Ash'ari or a Maturidi or whatever silly name you people give your ideology.

                              Well, Sheikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah made minced meat out of the heresy and innovation of Ash'ariyyah and likewise all other deviant sects.

                              But your guru from Sufi Answers blog declared him a kaafir for that.
