  • Children brought up with no God are MORE generous and tolerant, study finds

YOUNG children brought up not believing in God are more likely to be generous and tolerant than those who grow up in a religious household, a study has suggested.

"Agnostic and atheist kids were significantly more likely to share than children whose parents were religious.

But children who believe in God were more likely to be vengeful and back harsher punishments for those who hurt others.

It was suggested this was because religious children feel as they are going to heaven they are less concerned about the consequences of being mean.

The findings was in line with previous research in adults which showed that the more religious a person was the more intolerant they were.

65% of religious people vs 56% non-religious people figure isn't very compelling.

    9% isn't very significant difference.

Also, when you consider that these religious people often give more money to their own religious institution it removes good willingness factor as its a bit egotistical.

Money is also not good metric to analyze good warmheartedness since most religious are often intimidated with the punishment of hell.

Are they donating because they want to save their own arse from hell or help their fellow human?

The ones who give away large amounts of money are often very gullible.

The Preacher & Tele-evangelist constantly psychologically extort their followers with guilt & trickery. These con artist then use this money to fund their for profit ministries and their lavish lifestyles.

In sum, it can be said that religious people give more money not through their own sober volition but because they are constantly asked to do so.

Your article is kinda mook as a response to my original article.

Have you ever heard of ignorance is bliss?

It's funny how belonging to any religion can help you sustain happiness.
It doesn't matter who you pray to.

Christianity works just as well as Buddhism.
and Buddhism works just as well as Islam.
Islam works just as well as Hinduism.

I wonder if Allah helps non-muslims when they worship "false idols" ? hmm

In the end, it's all just escapism and tricking oneself to be happy and avoiding the harsh reality.

Religion doesn't help anyone with issues pertaining to the physical realm.

Why does tolerance and generosity matter if you don't believe in anything?

lol again you make yourself look like a complete fool

The more you talk, the more you reveal how much indoctrinated you truly are.

I am assuming you are saying this because I am atheist.

Being an atheist doesn't mean that I am an amoral or immoral person.
It simply means that don't belong to or follow a religion.
Many atheists do follow philosophies to be a "better person".

Morals is a human invention for survival & social cohesion.
It's our empathy and concern for one another that has help the human to survive until now. Or else we would have simply all killed each other.

Also, the point is that religious people often claim to "better" people over non-religious people which the article argues that they are not.

So you are saying giving charity and being generous is syrvival strategy? If so, then it is not really a "moral" decision. It is instinctive. Shock means your whole thread is meaningless.

If genorocity and charity is survival instinct it means All human beings do it because subcontiously they want their kind to surivive. This means that even if religious people are being generous, they aren't doing it because of their beliefs but because nature tells them to do so.

You just proved again how much of an idiot you are. Yesterday you shot yourself in the foot with your stupidity and here you are again today repeating the same mistake.

You're doing it again, acting Religulous.

Charity is actually a quite new.
I never said giving charity is a species survival strategy.
              Helping each other is.

The will to help each is a product of evolution as some scientists theorize.
A species can that help each other survives better than a species that doesn't.

It is moral because it involves concern for another.

It isn't moral when a religious person like yourself does any good deed because you are simply doing it to help yourself get into heaven and avoid hell.

B!tch Please!, the only person who is shooting themselves in the foot is you.

Let me help you out because you dont seem to understand what you just did:

You said that concern for others is a survival mechanism. Theory of survival states that people act instinctively. If a person doesn't make a rational decision but merely lets him self be guided by instinct, it is no longer a matter of moral judgement. The logical conclusion of your own statements is that there is no morality. You are merely acting instinctively. You give meaning to your instinctive behavior by telling yourself that you have a moral philosophy without religion.

So you are basically pissing in the wind.

I never said anything about instinct.
If that's what you understood than let me clear things up.
                  I just drank my coffee.

I did say morality is a human invention.
One important key aspect of morality is concern for another.

Let me clear what I meant by survival strategy or as you read as "survival mechanism":

I said it was product of Evolution, maybe part of Evolution is better choice of words, as it relates to Natural selection. Natural selection isn’t instinct.

Survival is a part of our instinct, though that is questionable in some people.

The species that works together can survive better than the ones that don't.

It can be said that our survival instinct inspired us to create moral doctrines which through time are refined.
As a result, we pass down our Moral doctrines to our children by educating them. I never said we are born with it. We are taught it and we develop.

Another good example is medical science, our survival instinct pushed us to create medicine to cure diseases from which we die from.

Certainly, the Golden Rule of Morality “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself” reflects an aspect wanting to live well.

Humans don't simply act instinctively, Humans are much more complex than that.
Nor are humans completely rational, you believing in a desert fairy tale & demons is proof of that.

Helping another is moral because it helps the community. The individual benefits from living in a better community. Just because we benefit from a better community doesn’t make the act any less noble.
Unlike a religious person, a non-religious person isn’t motivated by reward or pushed by fear of hell. A non-religious does a moral act because it helps the community. Wanting to help the community is a moral act.

It is not egotistical, because you are thinking about your community & not your own arse.

Being motivated by getting extra points with Allah isn't moral. It is thinking about yourself.

In the end, a moral act depends on the will of the individual. So it is not instinct.
Your survival instinct can push you into confrontation between yourself & helping fellow man.

You can debate what is true objective morality is & Morality vs. Evolution on some other thread or forum.
Philosophers have been debating what true morality is for 2000 years and with arrival the theory of Natural Selection.
Because you are simply derailing from the topic of my thread.

I am pissing in the wind?
Didn't your Muhammad recommend drinking camel urine?

                      Damir,
You spit out words like evolution and natural selection by not knowing what they mean. Belief in a deity itself is an evolutionary process, religion evolves early in societies because it helps make groups in the society more unified and cooperative and can outlast a less organized group.

According to evolutionary biologists, atheism and secularism are products of prosperity. Caring and Sharing for others has no evolutionary value since your spending energy for the benefit for competing groups that might ultimately destroy you. The reason your an atheist is because you live in a society that has laws that are enforced and has resources that can support strong welfare programs so you dont have to worry about anything because the gov will take care of you no matter what. You feel safe and survival is not really an issue so therefore you are under a new belief that you don't need god because you have the gov.

A study examining the connection between religious faith and human evolution. "Thoughtful and provocative. . . . Wilson turns to religion, which, he claims, can be explained only by group selection. According to Wilson, a religion is the human equivalent of a pack of lions: by cooperating as a group, people attain benefits beyond their reach as individuals."― Times Literary Supplement , Book of the Year One of the great intellectual battles of modern times is between evolution and religion. Until now, they have been considered completely irreconcilable theories of origin and existence. David Sloan Wilson's Darwin's Cathedral takes the radical step of joining the two, in the process proposing an evolutionary theory of religion that shakes both evolutionary biology and social theory at their foundations. The key, argues Wilson, is to think of society as an organism, an old idea that has received new life based on recent developments in evolutionary biology. If society is an organism, can we then think of morality and religion as biologically and culturally evolved adaptations that enable human groups to function as single units rather than mere collections of individuals? Wilson brings a variety of evidence to bear on this question, from both the biological and social sciences. From Calvinism in sixteenth-century Geneva to Balinese water temples, from hunter-gatherer societies to urban America, Wilson demonstrates how religions have enabled people to achieve by collective action what they never could do alone. He also includes a chapter considering forgiveness from an evolutionary perspective and concludes by discussing how all social organizations, including science, could benefit by incorporating elements of religion. Religious believers often compare their communities to single organisms and even to insect colonies. Astoundingly, Wilson shows that they might be literally correct. Intended for any educated reader, Darwin's Cathedral will change forever the way we view the relations among evolution, religion, and human society. "As always, Wilson writes well and clearly and in a stimulating and provocative style. The book is interesting and important, and there can be no higher praise. . . . I applaud the approach taken by Wilson, and I urge you to read Darwin's Cathedral ." — Science "Wilson's book is more than just an attempt to understand religion. Even to readers with no interest in either religion or science, his book can serve as a model of how to discuss controversial subjects honestly." — New York Review of Books

Actually your study is inferior because all it does is just ask people and it does not measure how much charities actually collect. The study I put up measures actual data meaning people actually giving to charities. My study concludes that because religions actually organize charities and services that people attend gives them more opportunities to give. If a person attends church service or goes to a mosque or any other religious service, they have opportunity to give where a person such as yourself, an atheist, has very little opportunity to give. Ask yourself when was the last time you actually gave since people like you do not attend functions that gives you opportunity to give.
The question is not why they give, but do they ACTUALLY give.
