  • Is fasting obligatory in Ramadan?

According to this verse of Holy Quran , fasting is an option not compulsory! You can feed a poor person or fast as fast is always difficult.

Fasting) for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a poor person (for every day). But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast, it is better for you if only you know." (2:183-84)

dear badlun i have read the verse 2:183-84 but in german from rudi paret
there is a special number of days you have to fast, but not mention how many
so how do i know how many days i have to fast?

the same number you should made up from other days=> it refers only to if you are ill or on journey
but i have already sunni women who said because of their menstruation (they are not pure during this time) they could not fast so they have to made up the same days later, but nothing about it in these verse

the last part i understand as following: every creature is creation of god, so if you fast you do it only for you and god, but instead of fasting you do something good for lots of creature and for god which is better; so there is option fasting or not fasting as long as you help othere creature

      if you are asking..
You don't believe in Islam so what does it matter whether it is obligatory or not.
      If you are telling us..
We are not going to depend on the teachings of a non believer on a subject that he does not believe in.

Version two of this post: not this crap again..

If yes then why Quran gives you the option in one of its verses that you may fast or not. It can be yes or no, not only Yes.

If I am believer or not , is not the question. The question is that if Quran gives the option of not fasting because of difficulty then why it is obligatory to fast?

Good observations. No mention of exact number of days. And for doing good , it is not necessary to fast. You can do so without fasting too.

friend i don't have much knowledge, but as far as i know Fasting is obligatory and if someone is sick or in a journey then he is exempted from it. now i am confused either he should feed the poor or he is exempted from it too. in short i am following this thread to know the answer.

I am also confused that if Quran gives you the option of avoiding the difficulty of fasting especially in long summer days, or for those who work in difficult circumstances or just cannot keep fast because of any hardship, then the other option is available to feed poor.

I think this is better option to help others than just to remain hungry and thirsty.

Badlun is a sick and miserable person that likes to interfere in other peoples lives. He can not live and let live. He has to bother people.

Amazing question by a leading light in the battle for two dad families! It is like Badluns Safi paternal father says "fast" and his "shinwari" paternal father says "no!" Maybe one day - when Jesus comes back he Badlun will say "I am born of two dads somehow - I have not figured out how two poles and no holes can make me - but I am a miracle messiah

Khushal, don't thank my posts in an attempt to discourage Badlun because you don't have the slightest clue as to why I said what i said to him. And if you knew, you would most definitely not be thanking me for it.

Badlun, People come up with their own definitions of what the book says..It says different things to everyone.. What matters is what the book tells you and whether anything good comes out of that or not.
You want to be free and do your own thing because you don't like how every body else does this Islam thingy but at the same time, you want everyone's approval. You want to convince people by sneaking behind facts and re defining terms..Why can't you separate yourself from the crowd and get yourself this freedom on your own?? You are an individual. Individuals need to figure things out on their own and for themselves before they drag others behind them and suggesting "let's jump in to this well and we will see how it ends at the end.."
if you had this figured, you would jump right in to it and others will see where you end and follow. In order to do that, you have to have faith in yourself which you don't.
                              Don't waste your time.
