Atrocities, have nothing to do with the current situation. People are ethnocentric and fascist. If you go to Kabul, and if you can't speak Farsi, in some offices you wont even be heard. Likewise, in other offices, if they even smell a slight Panjsheri accent, you're gone.

And this is the status quo. How much more ethnocentric can we get by choosing a neutral name for the country?

My problem is, is that if we presist on something just because of our emotional attachment to the name, in what way are we any better than others?

This emotional attachment to ancient glory of Afghans is something that is blinding people to the realities I am trying to draw people's attention to.
Our society is not ethnocentric yet. Sure the pashtuns hat the tajics and vise versa and the hazaras hate the tajics and vise versa and the hazaras hate the pashtuns and vise versa but they are not at each others throats. yugoslavia is an example of an ethnocentric nation that was split apart because the serbian nationalist took over and everybody started fearing them and started fighting and they were at each others throats and it split the country up and destroyed what was once a respectable nation. If you try to bring up this name change whats going to happen is the nationalist will gain public support from all sides and thats what will destroy the country. you cant bring up subjects that arouses national emotions that is dangerious.

i kinda dig what sangar is saying....

Khorasan is a historical name that has ties to our right Islamic heritage. its an ethnically neutral name...however personally i prefer ARYANA much more

but if we want to be honest....AFGHANISTAN is from the Hindu Kush to the Indus....Herat/Mazar etc is not AFGHANISTAN

So i dig what Sangar is saying, esp. with the whole federal system but KHORASAN is too politicized now...go with ARYANA

Don't everybody screech at once, but I think there's some merit in what Amir al Ghaznavi says.

I think it's so difficult for many people to envision ANY new name that they become emotional and attack for the sake of attacking!

I think either Khorasan or Aryana is SO BEAUTIFUL that maybe there could be a referendum with these possibilities as options together with the current name.

I prefer Khorasan slightly because of what I have said elsewhere about the height of culture - which of course WAS centered around the court of Herat, which is perhaps why Pashtuns do not take to it.

There desperately needs to be an entire rebirth of the country. Everything is ashes: and frankly, names are IMPORTANT. If you use a name over and over, it elicits that quality and makes it occur in real life. That's my very firm belief. [Go right ahead and laugh, I don't mind because I know it works.]

So let's say Khorasan is selected as the name, then every time someone says "I am from Khorasan-Afghanistan" - for maybe it would have to be hyphenated temporarily til the world gets used to it - he and she assert that they are part of the entire concept of A New Sun Rising Over the former peoples and nation of Afghanistan.

Which let's be honest, has suffered SO MUCH.

What if the name is not pleasing to God?

I know there will be howls of protest at all this, but I am trying to bring out some other subtle angles to this heated debate.
Whether pleasing or not pleasing to God, the fact is: the past was full of sorrows, occupations, etc.

So : why not start out FRESH, and erase all these horrible memories of just even the last decades and much tumult previously too.

Afghanistan needs not only human help but Angelic help to rebuild and create happiness for its people. So what name will summon in Angels by the zillions? I think this should be a consideration. Of course there would not be easy agreement on this.

There is a case for Aryana too, because it IS the ancient name for the area. Think of how Zoroaster brought the religion which stressed the Victory of LIGHT over darkness from Balkh.

It would be a disaster to lose the North due to Pashtun nationalism because there's too much ancient rich spiritual energy there.

So you have to appeal to everybody whether it feels comfortable or not.

Why not go ask other ethnic groups what names they would like too?

It's only gracious, even if it grates badly on the Pashtuns. Pashtuns were part of Aryana, after all, I assume, so it should not be a slight for them. The national carrier is of course, through all these upsetting decades, Ariana. It's familiar to all Afghans, in short.

I like the name Ariana so much that I pressed my sister into naming a child that. But she never had a girl unfortunately so it never occurred.

On the other hand, Khorasan has POWER!
Say it and you feel the reverberations flying out to the world and announcing that a confident people are poised and ready to carry on with their lives.

Maybe too to prepare mentally to send out that army when the day arrives ....then everyone would like to participate. Not only Pashtuns, right?

I know I'm grating on everyone here. Think about the resonance value in a name, though.

If it doesn't mean anything anyway then why care about a slight 'confusion'?

Why are you being called a Dutch in Holland? Because that's your nationality now, Dutch. Same goes for non-Pukhtoon Afghans, their roots belong to Afghanistan nationally. And moreover, how would you react of you found out that non-Pukhtoon Afghans do want to be recognized as Afghans?

Really? Because my cousins-in-law (all non-Pukhtoons) speak only Pukhto at their working place in Shahre Naw?

You know, I was eating Mantu in this beautiful park in Kabul and the Mantu-seller was a Hazara. He was telling about the Taliban and what they did to local residents and after talking and talking, we started to talk about name change and my brother-in-law asked how it would be if the name was changed to something else? Like, Khorasan? The Mantu-seller laughed and said; 'Is Khorasan gonna fill the stomach of the hungry ones in this country? Is Khorasan gonna bring back those lives we lost? Is Khorasan gonna bring us the peace we are yearning for? If yes, then I am the first one up for the name change! If no then please spare the remaining million lives we got and let us struggle for peace instead of killing the name of peace this time.'

So all people of Afghanistan want is their well-being and very correctly a name change isn't gonna bring that, it will only hit Pukhtoon-nerves and the calmness we see today amongst all these ethnics, will rife again one more time. And now the question is, is it worth? My answer; No way!

When you propse something you have to think about the consequences of that proposal. For example general patraus wants to create different militias in different parts of the country to counter the taliban. Karzai is against this because he knows this is dangerious that could split the country up if you lose control of those militias and if you look at the history, private militias have always turned against their masters. he is trying to duplicate what he did in iraq. These ideas are not positve for the country. You cant build a respectable nation from a bunch of theives and butchers of people

If you are a true Kabuli then you should know the nature of Pashtuns more than any one. Sorry this dream will never come true - not even in million years.

There are suggested vidoes below the one you wached and Ghulam Sakhi delivers a devastating answer to yourself a half Khurasani and your other Khurasanis. I beg you to watch it!

What disgrace, you go an tell him that you are half Khurasani and half Ahmedzai and you want to change Afghanistan's name.

You are not even a full Ahmedzai and your have nothing to do with Ahmedzai. You were born and grow up among Kabulis and in Holland, whilst he is fully born bred southern Paktiawal Ahmedzai. Tell me who do you know in Ahmedzais?

I have already provided my answer, check it.

Sangar lives in dream world with his woolly ideas. His political views are strongly opinated by his personal dilemma and the conflict inside him. Even if I was him, it would be hard. His political ideas are just shambles and conflictual. He is wholeheartedly for Taliban whilst he wants to appease facsist Tajiks. Tajiks' immediate fear and source of conflict with Pashtuns is totalitarian Taliban, an we know what Taliban can do to them.
