Banning festivals which are not deemed as Islamic is pointless and oppressive. In Lahore they banned Basant, (also known as Vasanti in India). It's a tradition which existed many thousands of years, and a way for people to enjoy themselves. It has no negative impacts, same goes for Nauroz which is a vital part of the Perso-Iranian identity.

Why ban something when it doesn't affect anyone? Why not ban dog-fighting or animal cruelty? Why go for pre-Islamic festivals? Fascism at its best.

So what happens is people fly kites, and when the kite strings intersect, it's basically a kite fight. The kite who's string stays intact is the winner.

People used to fiend this. There were all kinds of tricks, like copper laced strings. And sometimes people would fall off roofs in the middle of a kite fight.

Pakistanis have been flying kites in cities for a long time. Same idea as that Kite Runner novel stuff. Competition gets stiff when you do pathang baazi, so people would coat the strings with glass shards resulting in a win. Now imagine you are riding your motorcycle in the city and there are loose kite strings from a battle. You ride so fast and can't see the string that it slits your throat. The kites strings were basically the same as they use on fishing poles in the west so they are made of strong fibers and rarely break.
