Frankely speaking i am surprised at the article.
This is apart from the huge Pashtun population who are trapped in the Paki sponsored insurgency who can't join national army due to threats to their clans and families. Same even happened in Swat where most policemen quit their services.

Could be some fake dawn news propaganda.

LOL. Yes Dawn, the Paki newspaper wrote this report on my wish.

You people can't understand one simple thing that Pakis have switched thier plans now. From now on they will be concentrating more on Afghan minorities as the old tactic didn't work. They had assumed a huge pashtun insurgency in the wake of their malicious propaganda. They even tried to link Taliban insurgency with Pashtuns national movement. This way they expected to gain sympathies of Pashtuns of occupied Pakhtunkhwa also.

From what i noticed in Kabul, there were less Pashtuns in the police force. I am not really sure about the current army.

I remember being told that in the 60's,70's you had to be Pashtun to be in the army or police force. There were certain criteria's:

          1) You had to be Pashtun
          2) You had to be tall and broad features
          3) You had to be educated
          4) You had to come from a respected family

My grandfather was in the army and all of my uncles served as soldiers before the Soviet invasion.

How the police and army in Kabul are now is totally different from a couple decades ago. Now many are besawad (illiterate) and nearly all are very dishonest people. I am speaking on my observation and experiences.

Dont call me a paki imposter, thanks. Maybe you could also be a imposter too.

Every general who i know, was Pashtun.

Are you living in Zaher Shah's Era!

The army is no longer a conscript army so anybody could be exempt. Neither, it is forced on someone so those not serving have any privilege.

And yes Sahil is right, Tajiks have a firm grip on the army specially the officer core and commanders.

All people including the Americans say they are the most effective fighters against Taliban. Pashtuns are not trusted since they could be siding with Taliban.

Today the representation in the army means power and room for political manoeuvres.

^^ If Pashtuns 're less trusted to join the army then how do all those people including Americans know what type of fighters Pashtuns 're?? And it still amazes me that some people think a Tajekized army trained by Nati can actually compete with those Nato themselves couldn't even compete against, which is Taliban.

the Taliban ISI conspiracy is getting quite played out. Anyways before soviet invasion both my grandpa"s were commanding officers and they are/were Pashtuns. My uncle who was police chief of lashkar gar is a Pashtun.

the current afghan army is not organized and powerless, its not easy for army to recruite people, the private militia pays well and much safer. the current army will recruite any one who wish to join it. no one is discriminated. its absolute lie.

You made comments without reading my posts. Just read it again. I said there that the concessions in the past had made the people of Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul etc. to abstain from serving in today's Afghan Army.

Another thing. You should re-read the article by Dawn again. They have quoted the International Crisis Group (ICG) for their statistics which is a far more authentic and reliable source of information as compared to your year 2009 oudated article written by an antiwar activist who has gathered bits and pieces from scattered sources to make his article. That person Gareth Porter has never been to Afghanistan, While ICG has made a survey based on the ground research.

the article is bs, if anything there is discrimination against pashtuns in the army.

not that theres anything wrong with it, its a puppet army whose operations are dictated by the americans. anyone taking pride in this army and their position in it, is a complete joke.

once the country is free of occupation and calls its own shots, then ill care about discrimination. today its just another division of the US army and tajiks who take pride in their people filling the top ranks are laughable.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Without reading the article you have started comments. Just read it what it says.

It was written by the enemies of Afghanistan to prove that Pashtuns in afghanistan are oppressing afghan minorities but this unwittingly also proves that Pashtuns still hold political power which several here in this forum have refused to accept. On the contrary they have erected a grand structure of fallacies and lies of the deprivation and disempowerment of Pashtuns in Afghanistan.

Tajik grip on Afghan army signals strife
                              By Gareth Porter

WASHINGTON - Contrary to the official portrayal of the Afghan National Army (ANA) as ethnically balanced, the latest data from United States sources reveal that the Tajik minority now accounts for far more ANA troops than the Pashtuns, the country's largest ethnic group.
