I don't know if it happens often.

I've only known one Afghan girl with an American who actually left her after getting her pregnant, her mom is also known to be loose. there is one Pakistani Pashtun girl which is also loose but she hangs out with afghans and Pakistanis.
I do know many Iranian girls who have married Americans. Female Iranians are much more educated than their male counterparts. Many Iranian women tell me that they refuse to marry someone with less education than them and they say its hard to find an Iranian boy with similar education level cause many of them listen to rap and smoke weed.

The same is true with female Afghans, they are more educated then male counterparts...for more religious afghan parents when their daughter marry non-Muslims they claim the guy has converted...but it really doesn't matter when two mature adults want to spend their life together.
The problem with some Afghan girls are their deep complex against Afghan man, off course most are due to valid reasons...specially how their father treated/treats their mother and other hypocrisy of Afghan male---do everything un-islamic but use Islam to control woman.

brother, the Afghans here are a mess, even kids who come from decent families are screwed up. There's a Pashto Poet/writer, he's kind of famous among expats around the world, he lives in Virginia, my dad used to love him .....but he's a straight up dawoos.
