Historically Islam has been much more tolerant than Judaism, Christianism.. and so on. Religious minorities can be found almost everywhere all over the Islamic world. Even they were allowed to reach high political positions in the government and administration. Muslims lose their cool when they feel their faith is being mocked. But same thing happens with Europeans. They are kinda obsessed with Muslims and Islam.

But you made a valid point: Oriental people need to leave behind their feudal/medieval mentality and clientelism. We need to create strong and real civil institutions and reach modernity. Our own future is at stack.

not really, it was later after the 8th and 9th century when muslims became a bit peaceful, but the first 100-200 years were brutally violent, Islam is a religion of conquering other people, did you think they conquered peacefully? think again
