Canada is more like a state, comparing it against the usa, with due respect is almost an insult. A more valid question would be, canada vs new york, or canada vs california; etc. If canada vs new york, i can almost guaranty you that you will like it here in nys, although i would recommend anyone massachusetts, which has it all.

    that is horse manure.

    • There is a reason why more than 70% of Canada's population lives near the US border.

Live in California and personally I hate it... would rather live on the east coast where yes it might be cold but cost of living is less. And yes I have had the privledge to live in teh midwest, east and west coast... for raising a family, I love the midwest, career prospective depending on the industry, either west or east coast. Retirement if you can afford it west coast, I can't and therefore woudl love to go back to my NJ!!!!!

That's true. VA in general is kind of a boring state, but i think it's worth a visit and its quiet and calm. I hope to go there one day.

          • As an American Citizen I LOVE Canada, it is cold and winters are bad but cities like Ottawa and Montreal are clean, well supported by infrastructure. GREAT medical and educational institutions. I say go there.

Chicago has arguably, according to some, the best university in the world which is the University of Chicago. They also have one of the best Computer Science schools on earth, UIUC. UIUC, in just about any Computer Science ranking, is Top 5. They obviously have hundres of other universities, but UIUC and UofC are the strongest.

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I always wanted to visit California and thought about it as being the best/richest/most interesting place in USA due to the amazing landscapes in California, weather, diversity, Silicon Valley, Stanford University, major cities, biggest and richest American state etc.
Also what about family life? What is best for toddlers/young children? I know that there are a few Iraqi/Saudi communities in California in particular the San Diego/Los Angeles area.

Do anyone here have experience with both areas (California and New York/Boston area)?

I am currently studying abroad (in Europe to be precise) but I am thinking off studying in the US if given the opportunity.
I would recommend you the east, since the east is the power house of higher education. The west also has some great institutions, but the Princeton, Harvard, MIT, Columbia and the gang along with great med schools are in the east. It's really hard to answer, and it depends on which school you are admitted in.

There are hardly any mentionable universites in chigacgo. Not to mention Toronto just surpassed Chicago as the 4th largest city in North America.

                    Khushan Prince,

Have you heard of the University of Chicago? UIUC? Northwestern? For example, a school like UIUC has a top 5 CS program on earth. No Canadian university has a reach like UIUC in a emerging field like Computer Science.

And University of Chicago? Malgara, let's just say it has a deep, deep history. Let's just say when you mention U of C you mention it with a bit of respect. It's top 5 in North America, top 10 in the world wror gula. As of now, it's according to some top 3 or top 4 in the USA.

I am studying civil engineering right now in Europe while my wife is pursuing a career as a dentist. Currently we live here with my 1.5 old son but it is only temporarily since the Saudi government has enabled my wife to get a scholarship to study in the US (me likewise) nor are we citizens. So we are thinking about relocating to the US or at least trying it out. None of us have ever set a foot in the US and are unfamiliar with it aside from friends/family members who have been lucky enough to get scholarships there. We are both aware that a degree in the US would get us better opportunities back home and we would like to try out this experience.

Also I am not aiming at being accepted at the best universities (doubt I ever will) but currently I am studying in DK at one of the leading technical universities in the EU pursuing a degree in civil engineering. But I have discussed this issue with people that deal with scholarships in the US back home and here and they recommend such a move if possible.

But we do worry about the costs of living, whether we can assimilate (more so my wife I doubt the US is any different than Western Europe but correct me if I am wrong). At least we are aware that there are many Saudi/Iraqi and Arab/Muslim students in the US so we should have no problems assimilating at the first sight.

All in all US for us is unknown land

There are a lot of Arabs here, and a place like New York in my opinion would be perfect for you. Why? Because of the large Arab population, and incredible diversity, along with top notch schools. If you need any advice, please do not hesitate to contact me my brother.

Lol when people want to go to university on the east coast they don't even consider looking at Chicago for university becuase of how ghetto it is. Well that's what comes to people's mind. I don't care if Canadian universities not as great as American unis because I don't consider doing my post secondary education in Canada. As for U of C, I can say that Virginia Tech is a top 10 in USA.

Admin wrora, you have to understand that not everyone wants to attend an "elite" university as you put it to get a degree. Lots of people want to get their degrees in their own country because they want to be close to home and still see their parents. Hope you understand bro. I hope you didn't feel bad about my last response. I know it sounded a bit harsh but I'm sorry if I gave a wrong impression on you.
