Go to any Pashtun family in a village and you'll see that most Pashtun women just wear their 'teekray' and their 'lahmen'. And the older women in Pashtun families –*they especially don't wear the burkas*–*they roam around freely on the streets just in their charmi (traditional clothes).

Also, in the Taliban era, though the Taliban forced burkas on women (esp. the minorities) in Afghanistan, they could not force Pashtun females from the villages to wear the burkas. For instance, the elderly females in my family roamed around the streets in the Taliban era just in their traditional clothes, not giving two-****s about the rules the Taliban were forcing on females. And, the taliban knew very well not to mess with these hot-headed elderly females. Pashtun females that came from big families (as in families with a lot of connections and history) in Afghanistan were not subjected to the same rules as other females in Afghanistan during the Taliban era.

Moreover, I find your last line of 'And by the why if its only farsiwan custom why did the taliban like burqa so much that they forced every woman to wear it?' quite nonsensical. The Taliban do not represent the majority of Pashtuns... they are a political group. How the hell are you proving your point by saying the Taliban 'likes the burqa' so much?

The Pashtuns are not religious –*they are very traditional and cultural. The burqa does not exist in the Pashtun culture. It's why mostly city-dwelling Pashtuns during the Taliban era wore burqas and not the heavily cultural Pashtuns that lived in villages.

OMG what a full of bull**** you posted here. I am from Khost a provinve where 99% are Pashtuns and when we were there my sister and all the other female family members had chadari at home, they wear them when they went to bazar, only my granmother didn't wear it becuase she is really old. When we told to my grandmother on the phone that we gona visit her, the first thing she told us, is that she gona bring chadari for my sister and my mother, becuase whith out it you can't go outside the house. In Khost every woman now wears burqa when she is outside. I don't know where you get this noncense that somehow pashtun women are only wearing traditional clothes outside LOL. Women of powerfull and rich familys don't go alone outside, they go in chadari and whith a male. You must have seen some women from some remote vilages or the Kuchis, becuase they don't wear it. They can't wear it, becuase of there tasks that they have to do every day...And also young girls age 12 and younger don't wear burqas.....
You can deny what you want but chadari is really integrated in pashtun culture, you would never see a pashtun women even in Kabul whith out it.
Thanx to extremist mullahs and taliban.

For what it's worth, there was once a time in Qandahar city where women could roam around with just(or even without) a poranay showing their face.

I don't think anybody with a brain denies that the Taliban did take the country a few thousands years back with a few of their backward laws.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Chaddari is not even a Pashto word but thats a different discussion.

The chaddari is an urban thing. It was worn by the Shia minority of the Qezelbash people in Kabul, Kandahar and Gardez City.

It went into mainstream in Kabul specially for women who would go out or work and was abolished by a royal decree for working women and the wifes of all state employees in the 70ies.

Pashtun culture knows the tekray/porany but not a full-cover chaddari.

Nowadays things have changed and due to security reaons or to some extend social radicalisation, women wear it across the country in urban centres but its rare on the countryside.
          The only constant is change.

OMg you peopel really have a difuculty in understanding.
I want to clear a few things.

            1) Chadari/burqa was not original Pashtun custime for women. I know that. Jesus you don't have to repeat it all the time -_-.

            2) Chadari is integrated in pashtun culture in Afghanistan the same as celebrating Nawroz and atan. Nawroz from the persians and if ou you look at the history of attan dance, historians say that pashtuns took it over from arabs....

            3) In villages only old women go outside whith out chadari or littel girls. You would never see a young village girl roaming in a village in just a headscarf.

            4) I would rather see Afghan women wearing the burqa like that of the arabs than this tent. But it will take us another 100 year before this hideous pice of fabric is gone.

l guess Afghans love to live in midieval country. The old elite was right all along. If you just care for your self and even if you dress and act like you are European no one gona call you kafir as long as you let the rest do what they want to do. And even if they are gona starve to death they would be happy becuase there women are besewad and locked at home. They them self can grow there beard to the ground and enjoing attan at the weding partys.

Becuase lets be honest was there a big difrence between the commies and the royal family if you looked at there dress and social behaviour? I don't think so. The only difrence was that the royal family didn't interfere whith the rural population but the commies wanted that everyone would become modern like them.

Even today Afghanistan is pathetic because every channel u watch there is some guy talking and saying what they want the government to do for them
But they are capable of doing that same thing on their own

The only downfall of commies was their comminess lol yes they didn't pray and yes they were treating Russians like bagwan and they were showing it so the jihadi princesses got a bit jelous and wanted to take advantage of that and they did all they said was

                Commu= god
                Nist= not
And they all fall for it that's communism means that they believe there is no god which is a load of crap but ignorance does alot to people

I would rather them going back to life back then just a lil more religious and it will be perfect but this topic is for another thread I have a feelin all this will be deleted anyways llol

The Burqa predates the Taliban so you cant really blame that on the taliban. The burqa was foreign to the pashawaris when the afghan refugees came in the 80's.
Modest dress is still enforced in afghanistan taliban or no taliban. The conservative mood was always there before the taliban and it still exists today 11 years later after the taliban. The taliban did not introduce anything new, they just went with the flow of the conservative nature of the country.

The royals did not interfere with the rurals because they knew they couldnt challenge them.
The commies invited russian soldiers because they needed help in challenging the rurals.
the majahadeen were divided and unorganized, party politics was fought with the gun.
the taliban just went with the conservative mood of the country.
the current government is doing the same thing as the commies. invite foreigners to challenge the rurals.

The task that the commies wanted to accomplish and the current government wants to accomplish takes many decades if not centuries. Women in America fought for nealry 200 years to get the right to vote. Its counter productive to try to do it over night.

Why is it that pashtun culture can only be reprecented by rurals? So the city peopel don't count? Is that it? if even in the future 60% of pashtun gona live in the city and there customs may be difrent from the villages still the villigers would be the true Pashtuns and the city peopel not? Is that what you are geting at the whole time whith your urban this and urban that?
You can say it is a farsiwan dress but most of the time Pashtun women wearing it.

Not all of Khost is one big city. My grandmother lives in a village. When we went there my mother plus my sister had chadari on. And we went from her house to our uncle walking my mother and sister were wearing chadari.
Yes chadari was before taliban and yes it is a farsiwan custom, but taliban inforced it one every woman and pashtuns are seeing chadari as part of there culture.
