MQM vs ANP is recent phenomena. But keep in mind that MQM also targets those pashtuns who are in jumat e islami, PPP and muslim league. Beside political enemities, the ethnic tensions exist in those areas where mohajir dominated areas meet pashtun dominated areas.
MQM was founded in 1984 while pashtun-mohajir riots started in 60s during ayub khan times. MQM gained wide support among mohajirs in 80s when a pashtun bus driver accidently killed a mohajir girl on the road due to reckless drivring. Mohajirs called her a shaheed and started attacking pashtuns all over the city. This is typical culture of riots that you would see in U.P and bihar.
