  • With Love from Bangladesh

As salam alaikum! Pakhair Raghley! How are you all?

I come from Bangladesh with good wishes and love for the Pashtuns. We have historical and cultural links of centuries. Our great Emperor Sher Shah was a Pashtun. All our ruling monarchies were Pashtun-Persian.

Looking forward to enjoying my stay here.

        Welcome!
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

        -Ferishta, 1560–1620

it probably is, but i never understood it myself. muslims in south asia are almost programmed to dislike the hindu culture or atleast they want to disassociate themselves from them, thats why they all like afghans, central asians, arabs conquerers. In pakistan for example i notice many people want to be arab, because punjab/sindh area was conquered by arab armies

Not as spineless as living in the foreign country that has invaded your father's country and afraid to speak your mind because there is a white van parked outside your apartment....

                        get it?

These guys are silly. It is like those who say "Why do you Afghans/Pakis/Malaysians take pride in Arabic names, Arabic greetings (As salamu 'alaikum) and adopting Arab culture rather than your own?" This is a misunderstanding.

We Bengalis are a proud independent nation.

We are the only major Muslim country with our own script and we defeated Punjabis who also had some traitor "Pathan" generals such as Niazi, Babar etc, and we fought for our language and culture.

                          We use our own script.

Arabs use Arabic script as do Iranians, Pakistanis etc (Nastalikh version).

Turks, Indonesians, Malaysians, Somalis some ex-communist states use Latin.

                          Some ex-Soviet states use Cyrillic.

Bengalis use the Bengali script, refusing to adopt the Arabic script as proposed by Yahya Khan (or Ayub Khan) not sure.

Actually Pakistanis say we are Bengali-centric and dislike the fact that we never adopted their "Pakistani" (Hindustani-Punjabi) culture. Sour grapes from losers.

The captain of our football team who defeated Pakistan and knocked them out of the world cup was a Hindu, our industries minister is a Hindu and other prominent positions are occupied by Hindus. We are not Arab-wannabes, though we are Muslim first and Bengali second (a big second, ask people in Calcutta or West Bengal if you're not sure).

Just to let everyone know in the midst of all the Farsi/Dari bashing in the forum, we Bengalis have nothing against Farsiwan or the Farsi language, a language rich in Islamic literature.

I forgot to add, Bangladesh is Muslim now because people in the eastern part of Bengal were mainly Buddhists, (Bangladesh is right next to Myanmar, South-east Asia and it was Bengali Buddhist priests that made Sri Lanka Buddhist).

They were oppressed by the Hindus, and so when Muslims like Bakhtiyar Khilji (rahmatullahi alaih) came, the Buddhists saw this as freedom from the Hindu yoke and eventually became Muslims. Hence the identification with Afghan/Pashtun rulers.

The Mughals (Turks) are disliked and seen as non-Bengali as they were racist and kept a barrier.

The Pashtuns e.g. Isa Khan mixed with the local Bengalis and became Bengali and are seen as national heroes. In the same way a religious Bosnian or Albanian would see the Ottoman Empire as heroes, or a Turk (of Bosnian/Albanian origin) would identify with Islam and Turkishness, though originally his people were Christian and European.

Bangladeshis are not like (secular) Turks who identify with their pre-Islamic empires or traditions.

                              Bengali Pala Empire.
