Bharati is right. Pashtuns were defeated by many armies throughout history. But one thing which is praise worthy about pashtuns is their sense of freedom and honour. Death is considered better than being subjugated and enslaved among Pashtuns. No doubt you can defeat Pashtuns in battles but no one has been able to force them to abandon their lifestyle and values (pashtunwali).

Pashtuns accepted Islam by their own free will. It took hundreds of years for Pashtuns to become majority Muslim. Same is the case with other south Asians and Iranians. There might be different reasons as to why they became Muslims, some maybe due pure faith and some to escape Jizya. Others might have become Muslims because their tribal leaders converted to Islam.
There are many examples where the new Arab rulers in the early stages didn't encourage people to become Muslim so they can keep receiving the jizya tax from non Muslims. It was good business for them.
