This attitude of yours and your arrogance and pride reveals the harshness of your heart towards the religion and your misguidance because of your strong Nationalistic inclination.

If something is considered Bid'ah it is so because its an expression of worship which is not based on evidence from the quran or the sunnah. But rather is a contradiction to the teachings of Islam. Therefore when something is deemed as bid'ah then it is by definition harmful. Because Islam prohibits any acts of worship which is not in our Shariah.

As the prophet sal allahu alayhi wasallam said:
فإن أصدق الحديث كلام الله تعالى ، وخير الهدي هدي محمد صلي الله عليه وعلى آله وصحبه وسلم ، وشر الأمور محدثاتها ، وكل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة ، وكل ضلالة في النار
The most truthful speech is that of Allah’s Book [the Qur’aan] and that the best of guidance is that of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم), The worst of evils are the muhdathaat (newly-invented matters [in the deen], and every innovated matter (in the deen) is a bid ‘ah; every bida’ah is a dalaalah (misguidance), and every dalaalah is the Fire of Hell.

Is it a harmful, demeaning or disrespectful act?
It's worse. As you can read here above, it is misguidance and it leads to hell fire.

We know that the Quran is sacred
Agreed. However this does not imply that the mushaf should be considered as an idol that gives protection or somehow has magical powers.
that is why we have to be clean before we can touch it
Who said that the bride and groom who walk down de isle with a qur'an on their head have not lost their wudu? It could be that the bride is in her menses. Or that the groom has farted because of the tention. Or even worse, Lewanaye Zalmaye, the outspoken apostate is holding the quran?
, and it just so happens that for some to kiss the Quran and place it between their eyes is a way of showing that.
Thi is an act of worship. Showing reverense to something which has high religious significance. This act must be supported by evidence from quran and sunnah. If there is no evidence, then the statement of rasool allah sal allahu alayhi wasallam applies here.

So bring evidence in support of this act. If you find evidence for that, then you must likewise have evidence for carrying quran on top of a bride and a grooms head. If you cant, then humble yourself and dont issue fatwas and make your own takhrij and ijtihad.

They are not worshiping the Quran, talking to the Quran, or asking the Quran for anything.
Doesn't matter. They are doing an act which is not supported by quran and sunnah.
It is their way of showing respect.
How about showing respect studying the quran and acting upon it? When people do not study the religion and do not want to learn how to have adab as shari'i and hold Islamic weddings then obviously they are using the quran as an idol.

Because if these people had respect for quran and knew its true value, they would have changed their ways and denounce their evil customs of mixed weddings, drinking, dancing wearing revealing clothes and immitating the kuffaar!

    I don't see a problem with that.
Because you are a jaahil. Seek knowledge.
That is if you dance and listen to immoral music, and are mixing around, than you have an argument.
Thats exactly what MOST people do in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Though traditionally, our people didn't/don't do that.
A shari'i wedding is popularized by Islamic movements in Afghanistan. Where there is no dancing, and free mixing etc. There nobody is holding quran on top of peoples head. Go to Kabul and visit any wedding held where Estah movement is involved.
If some one has the common sense to consider this an "improper" act, yet they go on to have music and dancing at their wedding, is a bit hypocritical don't you think? Like a drunk asking for a halal meal.
This exactly what people do. Have vodka at the parking lot or under the tables with white clothes. And then have halal meat with the palaow.

I seek refuge from women of today... have you read DaZahroJam posts?
Backbiting is a major sin in Islam. You are backbiting sister de Zahro Jaam.

Carrying the Quran over people has no value and it should be stopped.

The only thing that is Islamic about Afghan weddings is the nikkah paper--even the process is so unIslamic. During the nikkah you feel like you are in an auction. So much fuss about the mu'ajal (with ain) and muajal (with alif) of the haqq-e mehr.

The rest of how most Afghans conduct their weddings is just beyond the etiquettes of Islamic teachings, with dancing, over expenditure, so much vanity and pomp and showing off.

What is really saddening is when people don't ever stand up for Islam and just go with the norms (that have been established by culture).

All in all, I am so proud of you Laila Khore, may Allah reward for at least keeping the Quran sacred in an non-sacred environment (because the rest of what happens is so filthy and against one's conscience to even sit around an watch.)
Islam will prevail, a promise made by the Creator of this universe:

[61:8] They desire to extinguish the light of Allah with the breath of their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, even if the disbelievers hate it.

[61:9] He it is Who has sent His Messenger with the guidance and the Religion of truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religions, even if those who associate partners with God hate it.

You know whats sad? The more I look into my culture, the more I realize how paganistic
it is. And this is just another addition to what we're not supposed to be doing.

Along that note, I'd like to agree with someone else that mentioned Nikkah's are auctions now, there's nothing serious about it. I'm not sure if its the case elsewhere but in most Californian weddings, people don't even show up until the Nikkah is over. The bride will be hidden in another room, while the groom is surrounded by 50 men arguing about God knows what. I'd personally like it to be just my husband and I along with the Imam at a table, while we agree with spend our lives together. I want my close family and friends as our witnesses. Not me being, locked in another room having no clue on what's happening in the other room. <--- sorry, I went off on a tangent there.
"Do not lose hope in adversity and complain that God singled you out for punishment, remitting others guilty of worse sins. Your present state could very well be His intent to elevate your spiritual station. Or He could just be testing your faith. Everyday that you persevere, you grow closer to perfection. Thus, your present despair may be the beginning of an infinite blessing". - Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani.

                shlombay,

                Wrayun,
on one hand people are dancing on the other hand they are holding the Quran isn't that a contradiction and insult?
It's wrong if they are dancing and holding the Quran, but that is assumption on your part. If they are not dancing, and are holding the Quran? What if there was no music, no dance, no singing at all...yet we need to first agree upon whether these things dancing, music, and singing on "happy" occasions are haram to begin with.

                Levanaye Zalmaye,

My right arm began to ache. So I held it up in my left arm. And then I thought people would say, "omg he R holdingz Quran in left hand, he having no moralz, Wrayun was right after all!". So I held it up in my right arm once again. The next morning, my right arm didn't feel too good.
                Cool story, bro.

                *Mahzala*,

My intentions are not to disappoint.
You did not disappoint at all, you presented your point eloquently. : )

Because you are a jaahil. Seek knowledge.
Coming from you I'd take that as complement. Where do you get your attitude from, following Sunnah and Shariah? Fine example of the Salaf? I doubt it.

Just because people don't subscribe to your ideology, your school of thought, or your zealotry doesn't make them jaahil. Nor does it make you right.

It was a joke, get your head out of your arse. Breath a little.

                  Dearest Wrayun,

Sangar is a good person. His passions just need some calibration.

If Sangar wants to he can kill me, and if he does so, I will still forgive him. I know one thing, in my absence he will make sure that Islam is defended. Other people who are just part-time Muslims, who would do any bid'ah for the sake of their honour, would never give up their honour for Islam. Sangar, would give his whole being just to make sure that people don't distort the Islamic message.

I would take a bullet any day of the week for Sangar, but I will never take it for some people who use Islam for their own gains.

It has a symbolic meaning in Afghan culture.. It symbolizes that you are leaving with an Islamic blessing; women would leave after their weddings to their husband's house and the only thing they would carry in their hand was the Qur'an - if we cannot have anything else, at least let us take this.

See, I fully understand the reasoning behind why many say that it is disrespectful to have an Unislamic event and still have the Qur'an present. So instead of removing the Qur'an, why don't we make the environment more Islamic?
Would you want to walk down that isle without wudhu?
Would you want your spouse to walk down that isle without wudhu?
Would you want the person carrying it to carry it without wudhu?
Would you, on that night in which your new life commences, want to indulge in Unislamic behavior?

It is still better to have 1% good and 99% evil than having 100% evil. Because, potentially, that one single percent of good will make you increase your good deeds. So maybe, instead of removing the Qur'an from you ceremonies, you will remove the filth from your ceremonies. Maybe, if you're worried about respect toward the Qur'an, that very respect will push you to make your ceremonies more respectful toward the Qur'an.

So no, I'm not against it. I love each and every one of our little traditions. =)

Oh and regarding Lailo jaani's remark about people talking bad about a bride who doesn't walk under a Qur'an.. I don't think anyone will talk bad about the bride. It is usually assumed that the bride doesn't have a say in this. People will usually talk bad about her family, saying that they're inconsiderate or bebaak.. befarhang blah blah blah. Not that we should go after what people say. To each, their own

So, instead of getting rid of the filth, the 99%, you rather make yourself feel better by having the Quran there, as 1% purity? Pathetic!

Would you drink urine that has 1% milk in it, or drink milk that has 1% urine in it?

So yes, it is precisely my point. I never said to stop at that 1%. I merely pointed out that it is better to have 1% of good in you than having 0% and that we should work on increasing the percentage of good rather than the percentage of evil.
