  • Do You Have a Television at Home?

As salaamu aleikoum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

I know many conservative and traditional Pashtuns do not have televisions. I am talking about the ones who can afford them but still choose not to own one.

There are many reasons why we shouldn't watch tv.

And there are reasons why some might argue why we need tv.

Please present your case for and against television at home!

Btw: at home means: where your wife, daughters, mothers, sons, grandsons little brothers etc are.

If you live alone, please tell us about your situation and if you are for or against owning a tv.

we do have a television at home. i am not against the idea because i find it necessary to be connected to media directly. with the type of lifestyle that we have in foreign it's very hard to catch up with the news and everything else that happens around us. the television set or what is being broadcasted should not be trusted 100% nor should it be worshiped.
i personally do not watch tv but it has absolutely nothing to do with my religious views. i simply don't have the patience to sit in front of the tv. i do catch up on some shows online at my convenience.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

Yes we do but its hardly ever on. In my opinion, TVs will soon extinct.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I live in pakhtunkhwa. Here in cities and towns most people have TV who can afford to buy it. Many families have facility of cable also.

Pashtuns in villages are very strict and magority of them do not allow TV even if they can afford it. Having it is a magor sin there.

As magority of pashtuns live in villages so you can say that magority of us have not TVs in their homes.

I use to be a tv person. But I am loosing my habbit of watching tv. I have no tv at home. I live alone. My roommates have a tv. But we only watch football sometimes.

I like al jazeerah, discovery channel etc. But i would never buy a tv for that.

You can watch what you want on the internet.

I hate tv because you cant control what you want to see. Plus they have those nasty adds.

All adds in holland show peoples naked body, somebody shaking their behind or something other vulgar. Its getting silly. In a few years the television on Holland is going to be like it is in fFrance now. Nothing but nudity.

internet is much better. You can choose what you want to watch when you want to watch it and you can also do it everywhere.

I would never allow my wife and children ( when I get married) to watch tv. No tv in my house.

Most of my religious friends never owned a tv. ATheir children are wonderful

It's a really good question to bring up.

I turn my face away even from TV monitors in public places, usually. Unless there is some critically important news item that i feel I just need to know.

I know I will be deemed extreme, but I think the transmissions from TV sets of any type, especially the modern ones, are highly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.

Probably keeping up with almost any news is not worth enduring that bombardment with as yet unknown rays of harmful impact. I firmly believe that beyond external affects on the health, TV watching immediately obscures the "third eye" which allows one to 'see' spiritually. TV programs are so dark that they throw off people's ability to discern Truth.
Nothing ever is worth these bad effects!

Computers screens are not healthy either, but they are better overall than the heavy programming of now half a century of TV. The ads are invasive and the people we are forced to look at even opening up for example Yahoo, these really dark-souled celebrities, is quite damaging. So I have holy objects all around my computer to antidote this, including on the On-Off switch and covering up the LED lights which I also think have hidden bad effects. Supposedly even science says LED light stop one from sleeping right.

I don't have to worry about the opinion of anyone else. If I did have a husband who insisted on TV, I would feel so strongly about how poisonous they are even to have in the house that he should build a different building for it !
Even old black and white TVs are bad.

As an aside, I recommend putting Lavender essential oil on one's face when sitting at the computer for long amounts of time. Lavender is so powerful that it will deflect the computer rays. It's really good for all of us anyway for health.

              It will cure ANYTHING!
Feel free to ask more details, in case any of you wish suggestions as to how to use essential oils.
I know the right ones for various problems.

Colorful and impressive new avatar, Jasmine. Who is it exactly?

No I never watched, even as a child> I hated cartoons and the only program I ever watched was "Get Smart". It was about the fight between Kaos and Control, which were clever names for the Cold War agencies. It was SO well done, about a bumbling agent who still won every time against Kaos, the KGB. The best thing EVER produced, I'm sure.
Notably - I DO think this is critical, because one is watching the actual human being, not only a TV or movie character - the actor, Don Adams, was a very principled guy. His obituary said he had turned down cheap acting roles because they weren't proper, he thought. So God rewarded him with immortal fame as the lead in the eternally popular Get Smart !

Maybe, too, a few likewise wholesome programs but I NEVER was remotely interested in TV.
It was a little embarrassing: when kids would talk about various episodes of programs I would always fall quiet. I had no idea who or what they were discussing.
Instead, I spent every minute of spare time with my nose in a book.

Then after many years of resolute TV-rejection, I ran into a doctor from Iran on the bus. He was shocked when I said I happily lived without a set. He later rang the doorbell and brought up a TINY black and white old set he didn't need at that moment.
Since I'm too polite, I agreed to take it, but for a week only to experiment. [I should have just said no thank you, but I didn't want to hurt his feelings. Live and learn.]

In fact, there was some Middle East event at that time which WAS of keen interest to me.
So I watched the news for less than half an hour every night for the week.

I was amazed that I felt SO DEPRESSED even the first day. Each day of that week, the cloudy effect increased, where I would come away feeling MORE zapped out, energy completely sapped. I figured it was because I had not watched for so long that I could detect the depressive effect of TV clearly.

That's when I realized there are bad rays which affect one's nervous system and upset the fragile spiritual balance of one's 'aura'.

I was so glad when I could get it out of my apartment, and never looked back!
[That's why I mentioned even black and white TVs are nearly as bad as color. I could not believe the difference as soon as I went back to Zero TV watching! So I learned WHY it's so deleterious, at least for someone like me who would prefer anyway to get to the complete story. Not these distorted impressions given by the slapdash media coverage.

When pressed I would say, it's preferable to wait for the most ACCURATE book to appear on whatever topic. Why? Because these little snippets have no lasting value. Do I recall a single scene from that one week of news watching? No.
But I do remember the excellently written books I've read which delve in depth to provide a REAL understanding. Most relevant, a good political or historical book gives a fresh and innovative point of view which one can never get from the - to me - poor choices of "experts" trotted in to answer a couple of questions on these news programs.
The networks pick the worst people! I learned quickly during that week that these people talked on and on but said nothing that struck home as truth with me. Fluff at best, rigid 'party line' viewpoints at worst.

I learned that I did not care for, for example, Robin Wright, a supposed terrorism expert whose articles I had read. She didn't SAY anything of use!

                What do you think?

Yeah, I have two TVs at home. One is mostly for my mom to watch Pakistani and Indian dramas with, and the other's my brother's. I don't watch TV -- 'cause everything I love to watch is online, and that's more convenient for me. But when I'm visiting my siblings, we all watch TV together. Our favorite TV shows include, besides some cartoons, Law & Order, Double Jeopardy, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

                          Tv has some good things
when you are tired you can just watch with remote control
in internet you may be more physically involved
in tv the scenes change automatically you just watch, enjoy and relax
too much addiction to internet or computer is also dangrious.
tv more for entertainment an dinternet more for information
you also have remote control to select the channel you want,,its necessary you always watch obscene channels
tvs are irreplacables computer cant be a substitute for it both are different
children can learn foreign languages and can enjoy cartoons, others movies, dramas, music all

                          catya
I am very much interested in natural medicine and use of oils
we can have some discussion on this in some health section

yes we have a Full HD TV, and we need it because without it, my mum gets really board.
I don't watch that much, just watch some funny shows .
Back home in my Village I never watch TV or go on Internet.
In the West TV and Internet are important.

                              TV.........IDIOT BOX.....
i do have tv at home....rather it will sound like an exaggeration but 4 tv's at home....each in one's room and one in living room....

but then it mightsound strange again that i amnot at all for watching the Idiot Box.....for me either laughter shows sometimes....so i atleast laught a lot in this otherwise too serious life of mine.....

and i too watch 'Castle'.......Travel and LIving is the best on tv according to me....i can go to any part of the world......its justtooo good....

apart form that no drama's for me at all...especially Indian Drama are all utter nonsense....highly melodramatic.....God.......how can somebody stand the dramas i dont understand.......mothers especially.....will go on crying along withe characters in the drama adn will take it to their hearts.....

and its impossible to watch tv with family....we only end up embaressing ourselves......with allnonsense advertisements toooo......

i am a voracious reader.....i prefer readingbooks to watching the idiot box....i canfinish off one book in a day if not interuppted by my mom (which i am often interupted)......be in fiction, non-ficton, true life stories, anything i can go on reading and reading......

amongst cartoon TOM AND JERRY is soemthing i can still watch.....i remember my dad use to get video cassettes of tom and jerry and we use to watch for 3hours without break....and also a lot of King King movies and Indiana JOnes..

also i guess....not having tv at home is not the solution for bringing up kids....have the tv but the children but be made to understand between good and bad, their coscience, and choose the good......if we completely restrict things then we are binding them with rules and they would be more eager to do somethingthat theyrestricted to do....

these days parents leave thekids in front of the tv to watch cartoons as they have no time for kids....but am shocked to see what they show in cartoons tooo......parents should keep a watch on kids regarding what kind ofcartoons they watch......

and i loved watching Pakistani drama which never lasted beyond 13 episodes unlike Indian Drama which goes beyong 1000 and 2000 episodes.....i remember watching TANHAIYAAN and some other good ones...unfortunately no pakistan channel now....so havent watched any since ages...
