A few of you have this incorrectly.
Nikkah=Islamic marriage.
Nikkah is a marriage contract in our religion. As soon as the nikkah is completed, man and woman are husband and wife, are maharam to one another. Now whether they make this as an official marriage ceremony or they wait for a wedding party and other cultural traditions, is totally up to them. But nikkah means the marriage is done in which the marriage may be consummated. If the couple decides to do nikkah during engagement, it is a safe and good advice that they do not get too close to each other, until the wedding night is done with. That way you avoid bad rumors and reputation and such. Nikkah is usually done in the brides house, simply because when the mullah and her witnesses come, they go straight to her house where the men of her family are there as well, to witness it. In some villages, the groom stays in his house and the bride stays in her father's house. When the mullah comes to her, he usually brings the bride's elderly and more respected men along. Then when the nikkah is completed, the rukhsati may take place. That is when the father of the bride approaches his daughter and gives her away in a green cloth. She is adorned with jewelry from her mother in law as a sign of bringing happiness and beauty to her husbands home. She is then taken with her brother's and uncles to her new home, her in-laws home.
