  • Neologism in Pashto

    Pakhtun intellectuals believe that Pashto language needs creating and adopting " Neologism" to enrich its vacabulary and replace " borrowed words & phrase" with indegenous material. Prof. Dr.M A Zayar has taken pains to publish his illustrated " Pushto Sindgay" of neologism, introducing new words and phrases in Pashto. For example;

    Pay-lik---- Footnote
    Parganwala----- Communism
    Parmakh-tag-pal--- Progressive
    Zan-stayana------ self praise
    Der-ghagay----- polyphony
    Zmak-pohana---- Geography
    Lakhkar-kot----- Garrison , etc ( nor bya)

We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

If I agree with you we w'd both be wrong.

Respected Dawezai, correct me if I am wrong but in the past I was taught that the appropriate word for living is Astogna and address is Astognazay. Random thought, I know.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Yes. Adding to it: when you say that you live in so and so, you say pa fulan zay ke astogan yam.

                  BTW: Zhagh-Dablay is Radio.

                    Hey Sangar,

So saying that, "Za pa plankey zay key osezhama" wouldn't be in compliance with scholarly Pashto right?

Quite a number of Pakhto scholars do not appreciate " neologism" in Pakhto, as pointed out by Feroz Afridi. They contend that Parsibans are trying to unite "Farsi" by persianizing Dari and integrating it with " Irani", but Pakhtuns are alienating Pashto for Afghanistan and Pakhtunkhwa, making it " Two languages". They also opine that neoligism tends to make the language cumbersome and complicated. They plead that " Loud speaker" was named by its inventor and nobody has the right to re-name it as " Lwar-ghagay". It is the prerogative of the parents, alone to name their child. But I support some essential exceptions in this argument.
