Funny! Ok hoshiyar is persian and yusufzais have changed it to hokhyar but which substitute word do you have for it. I have heard marwats pronouncing it as hoshyar as well likewise they say Chadar as it is in persian while we call it Tsadar, chaplai, jaye(place) etc are other persian words used in sheen dialect while it has been changed to tsaplai and dzai respectively in kheen dialect.Originally posted by History of Pashtuns View PostNot exactly, on occasions seen varies with sheen in soft dialect even today but those series of words are not part of the Sheen-Kheen series of variation. Nishta/nashta of hard dialect is nasta in my dialect. Persian loan word "Hoshiyaar" is corrupted into "Hokhiyaar" by speakers of hard dialect. It proves that that any Pashto words in hard dialect , which differs from soft ones in this variation, are not original Pashto words. That is, Mashaam is the original Pashto word, not Makhaam. Shaja is original Pashto word not , not Khaza. and so on
Elaborate how is masham and shaja pure pashto and makham and khaza not. LLast edited by Yousafzai Pakhtun; 10-28-2015, 10:57 AM.Na soz sho na saaz sho,

Use your brain, dont succumb to Peshawar-valley-ANP nationalism. Makham and Khaza are changed words , as output of every original word with Sh- input will be -Kh in hard dialect. The very fact that even Persian loan words are modified by Kheen dialect , attest to the fact that its not original but dialectal. Let me share some more example with you . Original "badshah" word is converted/corrupted into "bacha" by hard dialect. Shad or Shadi of farsi is corrupted into "Khad" or "Khadi" respectively. Original Jangal (forest) is corrupted into zangalOriginally posted by Yousafzai Pakhtun View PostElaborate how is masham and shaja pure pashto and makham and khaza not. L
Khashi and Ghoria Khel tribes, were obviously not speaking in hard dialect when their abodes were Suleiman range and Arghandab valley. Northern KPK, Bajaur, Mohmand, Nangarhar, Kunar etc of hard dialect, were not even populated by Pashtuns before the times of Mahmud Ghaznavi. Much of the settlement of Pashtuns in this region, took place in 15th century by the tribes which migrated from south.
For now, i am sharing excerpts from Sir Olaf's work,
"According to Professor Bailey, 'hard' pronunciation , Pakhtun, is comparatively new and dialectal. (page-35)
"Professor Morgenstierne's views are comprised in a very recent article contributed by him to the 4th fascicule of the new edition of Encyclopaedia of Islam, article 'Afghan'. He also regards Pashtun as the classical variant , and refers , rightly of course, to Pakhtun, as the North-Eastern way of speaking . Like Bailey he, too , affirms that Kh is later dialectal form (page-36)
Moreover the tradition goes that Malik Afghan settled in the place named Pusht or Pasht in the mountains , and from the name of this people have derived the name of Pashtun and their language Pushto ([Raverty, A Grammar of the Pukhto, Pushto, Or Language of the Afgháns, p-08). So even according to traditional accounts, Pusht or Pasht would be original word, Pashtun and Pashto would be derived from it which would later change into Pakhtun and Pakhtro in North-East.

english historian never used hard dialect. this is pure claim.
rest i don't have any understanding of this dialect difference. according to Mackenzie the difference in pashto dialect is phonological and morphological difference is very least and can be ignored. what does even that means?

Grammer has two components , morphology (the study of word forms) and syntax .
Phonology is a branch of linguistics concerned with the systematic organization of sounds in languages.
I think what Mckanzie means that most of the differences between Hard and Soft dialect are phonological (i.e sheen sound alternates with kheen sound instead of replacement of altogether different word) while vocabulary differences are negligible. Shaista and Khaista is phonological variation, while Bezu (monkey) and Shado is morphological variation, i think.

In the comparative table between four dialects ,given in your upload, its clear our Marwat dialect falls into South-Eastern dialect (Quetta, Zhob etc) and differs from Kandahari.Originally posted by marwat View Posthere i uploaded the full paper.
In the screen-shot of the dictionary by George Morgensterne you have given, Shaja appears standard word. Without any clue about abbreviation for languages like, Wz., Ms., Sl., Kh., i have no idea whats going in that dictionaryLast edited by Samandri; 10-29-2015, 04:23 PM.
