  • Hard and Soft dialect

    Salamuna dostano!

Our pashto language have two major dialects i.e Qandahari dialect or Sheen dialect and Peshawar valley dialect or Kh dialect. The english historians like H.Raverty has referred to it as soft dialect and hard dialect respectively. Other pakhtun researchers/ writers have used the same soft and hard terminology.

    My question is:
On which basis they call it hard n soft?
Why most of the books published during British era are in hard dialect?
Na soz sho na saaz sho,
    Bas hasy jwand tamam sho

Actually there are three groups of dialects, there are also middle dialects. Kheen is like throat-clearing, sheen is like chewing sweets. English also have hard time pronouncing kheen so it was hard dialect for them as it possess more hard words than Kandahari and middle ones.

I am not well acquainted with Pashto literature and grammar but correct me if i am wrong , Pashto text is not specific to any one particular dialect. Some of the unique Pashto letters are actually those ones which address different dialects variations. For example ښ is meant to address the Kheen and Sheen variation. You can pronounce it either Kheen or Sheen. There was no point for this letter if it was only meant for hard dialect, there is already خ for that. څ would address the variation between Middle dialects and Hard dialect on certain words , where "che' sounds are replaced with "tse". ځ is to address differences on words in middle dialects and Kheen/hard dialect where ''J'' is replaced with 'z'.

All the linguists and scholars agree that Kheen dialect is late comer. Your Yusufzais along with other Khashis, as well as Ghoria-khels (Khalils, Mohmands etc), as well as Ghurghustis in North e.g safis and jadoons, have migrated from Southern Afghanistan and Suleiman range , that is they were once speaking Soft dialect, the original Pashto. The Hard dialect is merely corruption/modification of original Pashto. For example even persian loan words are modified by Hard dialect speakers. Shaista was not meant to be pronounced Khaista.

In that case, i would say that no dialect is dozakhi except the one spoken by Nationalists. Because nationalists go to hell.

Thats a sweeping statement that the sheen dialect is the original pashto. Pashto language originated from Qandahar and the original qandahari old pashto even didnt had "sheen" they used "seen" instead of "sheen" like
            La maa atal nista
            Sa oso?
            Etc
So the present sheen and kheen dialects are its modern developed forms which emerged simultaneously.
Like other languages pashto also went through different developmental stages and two dialects emerged ie kheen and sheen dialect. Thus the spoken language may be different from place to place and tribe to tribe but there is uniformity in written language. Kheen, tseem, dzeem, zje, noorr etc gives two sounds ie the both the hard n soft dialect speakers pronounce according to their own dialect.

This Khurasani troll turns every topic in to an attempt to promote Wahabism, Arab nationalism and declare people infidels. There is a reason why groups which have more or less the same ideology as him (albeit a little different) such as the JUI have very little support in Pakhtunkhwa and it is decreasing more and more.

JUI? Haha Jamiat Juhala e Islam are allies of ANP. Their former spokesperson, Jan achakzai was a member here on PF Promoting Pshtun secular nationalism. I butchered him and he ran away with his tail behind his legs.

Enemies of Pashto and Pashtuns divide Pashto and Pashtuns on the basis of dialects and declaring one dialect original and the other fake. This is a pure linguistic phenomenon and nothing to do with good or bad Pashto, pure or impure, earlier and later etc.

Pashto is written in the same way in all dialects but very few words pronounced differently and for this different pronunciation especially of 2 letters khin/shin and ge/je , we have pure Pashto letters not Arabic or Persian ones.

Hard and Soft are because of these two letters as kh and ge are harder than sh and je.

Not exactly, on occasions seen varies with sheen in soft dialect even today but those series of words are not part of the Sheen-Kheen series of variation. Nishta/nashta of hard dialect is nasta in my dialect. Persian loan word "Hoshiyaar" is corrupted into "Hokhiyaar" by speakers of hard dialect. It proves that that any Pashto words in hard dialect , which differs from soft ones in this variation, are not original Pashto words. That is, Mashaam is the original Pashto word, not Makhaam. Shaja is original Pashto word not , not Khaza. and so on

This is very stupid and nationalistic assumption on your part, This is academic discussion and in Academic circles it is an accepted fact that Hard dialect is late comer. Hard dialect is simply a later modification of original Pashto, not much IQ is required to realize this fact.
