About the weddings, I agree, many Afghan Pashtoons, when seeing some of these things get very turned off because they see thigns they associate with Punjabis being recreated by Pakistani Pashtoons and then they wrongly jump to the conclusion (something most Pashtoons do, i.e., jumping to conclusions and zero-sum analysis) that they have adopted Punjabi culture in every respect.

Afghan's of all ethnicity are generally very negative about Pakistan which is why you see less of it incorporated into Afghan culture or events like weddings. The negativity probably stems as a result of being regional neighbors, the Durrand line question which was pushed pretty hard during our parent's generation, accusations of Pakistani interference in Afghanistan, the historical and blood association between Indians and Pakistanis, and more recently, some of the negative encounters they have had in Pakistan as refugees. For these reasons and others, Afghans typically will at least publicly disassociate themselves with anything Pakistani and look at any persons association with it negatively.

However, the farther away from either countries cities you get, the less that difference. It might be why the cuisine is different in your father's village versus at your home. For example, I've encountered many Peshawari Pukhtoons, probably Yusufzais by blood, and from not knowing their qowm, their fierce defense of anything Punjabi, their love and affinity for Punjabis to the point of picking them over an Afghan Pashtoon, etc. and then comparing them to the Yusufzais of Swat, even though many consider them at times "Pathan" they acted about 100% the same as any Afghan Pashtoon and the only way I could tell they weren't from the Afghan side was little differences in clothing and the very different food they cooked at home. Most of them don't ever have a problem saying I'm Afghan and use the word interchangeably with Pashtoon whereas you see that much less in urban centers like Pekhawar.

It's also interesting about the progression of spice in your home from your grandfather/grandmother's generation until now.
I think it highlights another subtlety in how we've (Pakistani/Afghan Pashtoons) grown apart in that the term "bland" comes up referring to the Afghan cuisine which is a term constantly used by Punjabis/Indians when eating Afghan food. Conversely, Afghans typically generalize Punjabi/Pakistani/Indian food as just a handful of chili pepper and so many spices that every dish tastes the same. This is just an observation on the micro-level, but it goes to show how we have adopted different generalities from other ethnic groups and highlights and unfortunately, how we relate more with foreign groups in our bias'.

Well, I am a Punjabi and my best friend is a Shinwari whose parents came from Afghanistan. I've been to his house twice in Peshawar, and he has a lot of love for me. I would stay in his guest house, and on many occasions during breakfast, and dinner, he would slide eggs or meat onto my plate. They would eat spicy things regularly, although it was not as spicy as Punjabi style. But then, I only mean Punjabi city style. In our villages, spice is not really used.

Even though there are a lot of *******s on this forum, my friend Shafiullah Shinwari has made me a lover of Pashtun people. His hospitality and kindness was the most genuine, I've ever seen in my life. He is probably my only real friend in this world.

I'm happy to hear you have had apositive experience with Pashtoons - hospitality, helpfulness, chivalry, etc. are what we actually pride ourselves on and is what I expect from every Pashtoon - I am often taken aback as you are when I see people who don't act in this way, these are the type of people I don't consider Pashtoon and those who I suspect have adopted other cultures.

Pashtoons don't have general hatred towards anyone (although they obviously have certain bias' as any group might) so long as they are approached in the proper manner. However, we are prideful about our culture and people so there is a high level of ethnocentrism involved, surely, but its our custom to treat every guest well.

If Pashtoons stood stronger on these types of traits, the ones that have led to us being lauded time and time again, at least in the past in poetry, song, movies etc., we would be in better shape then we are now. I believe their is a big correlation between us becoming weak on these honorable traits, almost all of which are intertwined with our religion and the weakening of our status around the globe.

And about the Punjabi thing, wow, i'm really surprised that you said that. I know in our house (mothers and fathers side both) anyone that doesn't speak Pashto is called a Punjabi (and that word doesn't have good connotations). Like every Pakistani Pashtun I know does not have favourable opinions of Punjabi's and would not choose them over an Afghan Pashtun. I don't mean to sound racist or anything though.

I found what you said about Yousafzai's from Swat really interesting, because i'm a Yousafzai from Malakand and I have never paid that close attention to culture there and similarities with Afghanistan (although next time I go there I definitely will!) but this sort of ties in with what I said about food at my fathers house.

On another note however, my mothers side is Mohmand and very close to Peshawar and i'd always considered them more purely Afghan (maybe because they're more tribal?). My great-grandmother wore Afghan dress her whole life. I think the reason spice is more prominent in my mothers house is because her family has moved throughout Pakistan so would have had lots of influences form the cultures around them. I do not think the food in my mothers village will taste like that, although i'm not sure since i've never been unfortunately as i've never been allowed :/

Also, I understand that Afghans don't like Pakistani's and want to distance themselves and I don't blame them, like I can see why. You just have to look at a refugee camp in Peshawar.

        p.s
I didn't mean for my saying Afghan food was bland to come across as a bad thing.
Absolutely no worries, I know you didn't mean any offense, you have been 100% polite. It's pretty refreshing to talk to someone on this forum for more then three posts without an insult, its a compliment to your family.

About food and influence from other peoples, its only natural when you move around. I think its more of an issue now though because there is an identity crisis between Pashtoons and people are ultra sensitive to anything a Pashtoon adopts from a foreign group. It's just that every day we seem to become less and less similar so some people long for more similarities, especially with something we so closely associate with "home" like food.

I think something else you alluded to, which is really interesting and something most people on the board should probably take heed of, is that our realities are shaped by those we interact with, most closely family, then friends, then acquaintances, then your village, city, etc. Just from the way you speak about Pashtoons/Afghans, etc., its easy to tell your family probably has little bias against Afghan Pashtoons. Since this is the case, you probably wouldn't end up befriending, through family or otherwise, people who had a different perspective on these things so all your friends, acquaintances, family, etc. probably feel the same as you and then as a human, we extrapolate that out to the masses.

The sad reality, though, is that I've met many Pakistani Pashtoons like yourself that reinforce for me a concept of Pashtoon identity across the border and then others who make me feel silly for ever thinking such a thing - ones that parrot off the same rhetoric as anti-Afghan/Pashtoon Punjabis like trying to make light of Afghan tribal mentality, telling me Punjabi and Pashtoon are the same, let's incorporate Afghanistan into Pakistan, Afghan Pashtoons are a wholly different people then Pakistani Pashtoons and Pakistani Pashtoons are closer to Punjabis, etc. which are comments that I would consider wholly insulting if directed at me but comments they volunteer on their own.

I think as Afghans we see more of this since we have lived on both sides of the Durrand. To be fair though, I think our views are also probably skewed because we generally have not lived under pleasant circumstances in Pakistan and therefore probably came into contact with some of the bad apples.

Another reason for the negativity from Pashtoons on both sides of the Durrand is that all the political rhetoric in Afghanistan pre-Soviet War claimed all of the Pakistani Pashtoon lands as ours and the Pashtoons in Pakistan the same as us - its what they had been taught in school and how they expected to be received in Pakistan during the Soviet War. While Afghans were being taught this, our brothers in Pakistan were being taught the opposite by the Punjabi administration where they generally teach them negative things about Afghanistan in school (as well as media) and try to make it seem as though Afghanistan and Pukhtoonistan have ever had any relationship whatsoever. The indoctrination on both sides probably resulted in more unfair bias as against one another.

Since that time, though, on the Afghan side, there is similar rhetoric aimed against Pakistan, Pakistani Pashtoons included. Because having Pashtoons on both sides detached better serves our other ethnic groups interest, it makes sense that they would push that type of agenda. If you were to merge Pashtoonistan and Afghanistan, You would have about 140 million Pashtoons and about 30-40 million Hazara,Uzbek, Tajik etc. This would mean that instead of being an overwhelming minority in Pakistan and a slight majority in Afghanistan, Pashtoons would become the overwhelming majority. Food for thought.

Thankyou, I do like to think I come from a good family :P

And yeah, your last point reminds me, didn't the British have this whole 'divide and conquer' idea going on. Makes sense.

I can understand why people get worried and try to grab on to anything that makes us the same, but really, does it matter if our food is different as long as we hold on to what really makes us Pashtun. I don't believe it is our food or clothing that really matters in bringing us together.

For me, I believe it's important we uphold our values, like to be hospitable, to be brave and loyal and to do the right thing. In my view anyway, it's those values and our Pashto language that makes us Pashtun.

I agree that I used Wikipedia to quote what I said earlier, but that was a while ago but now I'm skeptical on that so no need to quote me twice to get your point across. You didn't say "parts" of our language was borrowed but rather said "pashto was borrowed" which means you said the whole language was borrowed. You also didn't prove anything to me, all you said was that pashto has borrowed words from other languages which i already knew, and completly derailed the topic at that moment.

Oh and calling me be mantiq is proving your poor peoples skill already. Before trying to teach me manners I think you should take your own advice since you have the nerve to tell people how to act but don't behave like an adult yourself.

I'm ending this argument here, this is clearly going no where.

lol that was a while ago so let's stop talking about it since it makes me look completely foolish, silly, and like a liar. You were bay adab because I said you use Wikipedia and you got caught that you did, Allah (swt) taw khijawlat day woku. Chee isbaat soo chee te loiya sahwaa day kuhurray dah, baiyad bakhana wughwaree.

My manners are fine Alhamdillah, kho chee te bay mowjib bay adabi day kuhrray dah, chee dawsay insaan ye bayad taw sara daw say khaburreih kawom, wakht chee taw sara daw day may woku, te lig lig insaan sway.

Aw rikhtia dah, te daerrrrrrrr bay mantiq ye, everything you say is bay mantiq when you cite no sources, either lie or consciously avoid facts, and don't use logic.

Case in point, your conclusion that you inferred I meant the whole of our language was borrowed is an absolutely assinine conclusion to draw. The whole thread was about portions of our cuisine that was borrowed, a portion means a part from a whole, not the whole. So, then, when the following examples were given like clothing, language, etc. which, even with basic reading comprehension, you can understand were being used in support of the borrowing of portions of food from other cultures, a person with lig mantiq would of known it to mean borrowed portions of language, dress, etc. without having to have it spelled out.

All you do is nitpick at small things, unrelated to the larger issue, like saying I don't know tirway is a drink (which is idiotic and completely off-topic), calling me Pakistani, etc. People who don't' address the substance of something do it because they can't and try to harp on other things like you did.

How is talking about turwey going "off topic."? Its a drink and part of pashtun cuisine so I was ON topic. Oh and speak in one language and for gods sake please cut down on the paragraphs.

Because I am quite sure you don't know Pashto, given your issues between going back and forth between your "mother tongue" of Pashto and English, I will speak primarily in English.

First, I thought you were finished posting, taking the high road as is your habit, as evidenced by this thread? And I will speak as I please, you can't keep up with a 3 paragraphs post but want to discuss much more nuanced subjects - think about that for a second before you post from now on.

To answer your post, you honestly don't even understand very basic concepts, like the point of the thread. Just because the thread is about cuisine, it doesn't mean discussing any food or drink is on topic. We were talking about whether a particular food was borrowed or not, not whether I do or don't know what Tirway is. Do you understand why what your saying is not on topic?

I can't tell if your just purposely being childish, whether you don't truly see why your arguments are so juvenile, or this is all you can bring to the table.

Instead of trying to find one thing you can pick at in the whole of a post, which isn't even a valid argument to begin with, why not cut your losses and stop before you dig a larger trench for yourself?

                      In brief:
                      • You were bay adab to me for saying that you consult Wikipedia and two posts on this same thread prove that you do - when I brought it to your attention you avoided and only after I re-posted it did you say I should stop bringing it up because it was a long time ago (lol)
                      • You admit that you can't either read through a post more then a few sentences OR have no response for the substance so say you didn't read it
                      • Your only retorts to anything of substance is calling me Pakistani or saying I don't know what tirway is
                      • You have repeatedly been wrong and off-topic
                      • You admit you can't go back and forth between Pashto and English, which should supposedly be a mother tongue for you
                      • You have quite thoroughly shown you don't know Pashto, that you have never lived in Afghanistan or Pakistan and yet question other peoples claim to being Pashtoon

If all the above isn't enough reason for you to have sharm and at a minimum stop posting on this thread, then I don't know what else to say, your bay hayaw.

See, you didn't respond to my post, again. Dead serious, if you can't respond to the substance of my post, feel backed up into a corner because what you keep saying keeps on getting proven wrong just stop posting, say sorry and call it a day.

Don't just randomly keeping saying things without even substantiating or elaborating. For example, what was hypocritical and why don't I know what I'm talking about - you just say things without anything to back them up with like the random percentages you through (oops, I mistyped here, through instead of throw, I guess the rest of my post is invalidated per your standard lol) out or if you do have a source, its Wikipedia (then you get insulted when someone says it lol).

In any event, answer what I posted, it recaps everything pretty clearly because you said you have a hard-time reading more then a few paragraphs.

So respond to the substance, I laid it all out, respond to it. You were wrong on another point again, and I explained it to you, and you again just ignore it when your wrong.

So I now challenge you to respond to the substance of the post provided below:
