Now we come onto BLOOD GROUPING

Why is blood grouping important in forensic medicine? What information will it provide?

It helps in determination of disputed paternity:

Like in adultery charge by husband on wife and the husband claims this child is not his son and he wants divorce

Like blackmailing when child is born out of wedlock

Also in maintenance of illegal child

Sometimes there is DISPUTED MATERNITY in following circumstances

Accidental or purposeful interchange of child

A woman who pretends she was pregnant and delivered a child, but uses somebody elses child to make it her own

Grouping of blood in criminal cases

Inheritance claims as only the legitimate child can inherity parents property

            DEATH

Death can be defined as the permanent and irreversible loss of function of the three vital systems of the body

            CVS-CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
            CNS-CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
            RESPIRATORY CENTRE

These three systems are sometimes called the tripod of life

What are the criteria for diagnosis of death

1)Cessation of circulation (no heart sounds, no ECG, no pulse)
            2)Cessation of respiration
3)Absence of reflexes and responses (bilateral fixed dilatation of pupils etc..)
4)No muscular movements with generalised muscle flaccidity and no evidence of postural activity)

Next will be PHASES OF DEATH..........

              PHASES Of DEATH

              This falls under two categories

              Somatic or Clinical Death

              AND

              Molecular or cellular death

OK so wat is somatic or clinical death???

It is defined as the Death of integrated systems.
It is diagnosed by examination of the three vital systems (cvs, cns and respiratory system)

And what is Molecular or cellular death???

After death certain tissues continue to live for sometime depending on the cuse of death, condtions of the tissues and cells before death and also on their oxygen requirements.

According to systems, disappearance of life is in the following order

                        1)Left ventricle of heart
                        2)Stomach and intestines
                        3)Urinary Bladder
                        4)Right ventricle
                        5)Esophagus
                        6)Iris
                        7)Voluntary muscles

This period between somatic death and cellular death is rarely more than 3-4 hours...

                          Now for examples...

1.Nervous tissue dies within 5 minutes that is why cardiac arrest is very dangerous as it leads to anoxia (no oxygen) of brain

2.Muscles remain alive for 4 hours

3.Pupil remains dilated after death and is not reactive to light.

4.Spermatozoa also remain alive in epididymis for few days after death

5.Blood transfusion can be done from the dead body even after 6 hours of death if kept fresh by putting some drops of h20

                              CAUSES OF DEATH

Any injury, disease or intoxication which finally proves fatal is called cause of death

                              Two types

                              A)Immediate causes
1)Severe bleeding, 1/3rd loss of blood causes death. The internal bleeding may be

                              b.intracrania hemorrhage
                              c.extradural hemorrhage

2)Injury to vital organs like brain, lungs, spleen and heart

3)Neurogenic shock also called vasovagal shock. Causes paralysis of respiratory and cardiac centers

                              B)Delayed causes

                              1.Infections
                              2.Thrombosis
