                Friend, if I understood correctly, you were into mathematics one time but you stopped it, and now you want to begin to it again. Well, there is always a "minimum sufficient" for freelance mathematicians to pass. This is kind of a test, or a collection of skills, of a standard to be completed, which illustrates the very basic ability to perform calculative tasks, such as integral transformations. This "minimum sufficient" includes: the ability to evaluate any indefinite integral of a quantity expressible in elementary functions; the basic knowledge of rings, groups and other algebraic tools, and the ability of using them; a moderate knowledge of Fields Theory (so that you can understand the multivariable integral calculus); the ability of solving or having insight to nearly all elementary number theoretic problems to come; and finally, the ability to draw a line (yes, a line, this is the most fundamental skill needed to be introduced to set theory). Now, first of all, try to achieve all the goals sorted out here, I mean, reach these, first. Then choose your professional branch and look up for the modern problems in that area. Then pick one and do your research, and boom! You're a professional.
