so i am confused got 2nd year options etc to pick but i dont no what direction of maths i want to move into becouse i will also be doing masters inshallah so any older mathematicians that can shine some light? i love pure maths by the way so stats probability etc iv dropped dem already

What field of Math do you like?Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.
A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai
For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."
The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Pure Mathematics? it's not what you may think it it. first tell me what is your mathematics background up till now?
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
By the way you can't get anywhere as a Pure Mathemtician unless you understand the theoretical basis of probability and statistics. Stochastics is a very important field in mathematics.
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
iv just finished first year of uni and passed
its time to choose 2nd year options which will favor what choice we have for 3rd year specialization etc and i understand the theory statistics and probability i just find it immensely boring, but yh i understand i have to use it in certain fiels like example i did a project on the traveling salesman problem and i had to use poisson distribution in order to reach some things i were testing for still found it boring doh

there's much more than a first year/2nd year undergad course can really cover for that stuff.
so which Math classes have you taken and which ones are you planning to take, I can assess you and maybe even guide you with appropriate study materials.
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
I see traveling salesman problem, is combination without replacement problem, how many ways he can travel to all cities? Yes this is combinatorics, but these are APPLIED problems, not so much theoretical.Originally posted by sahil112 View Posti did a project on the traveling salesman problem and i had to use poisson distribution in order to reach some things i were testing for still found it boring doh
I think there needs to be a distinction between theoretical mathematics and applied mathematics.
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
you need to stop tryna put me down like im an idiot... ino there is much more to maths!!!!Originally posted by RevolutionThroughReason View Postthere's much more than a first year/2nd year course for that stuff.

but yh iv done functions, vectors and calc, done programming, algebra done a bit into fields etc part of it aswell, done stats, ciphers and number theory, mathematical communication which is proof and done computattional
2nd year modals core are:
complex variables
linear algebra
calc and vector calc
real analysis
what i can pick from is:
dynamical systems
applied mathematics
numerical maths
stats 2
decision analysis

ino it was part of my computational modal project was okish bit boring but yh learnt quite a bit basics to the problem etc used computer to make programs to get faster solutions or time saving adequate solutions depending on N cities and as N got bigger etc did a bit of 4 fold integration for error checking etc was quite funOriginally posted by RevolutionThroughReason View PostI see traveling salesman problem, is combination without replacement problem, how many ways he can travel to all cities? complex variables in second year? I guess the way things work in UK are different.
Real Analysis is Theoretical Calculus; it is proving properties of integration/derivation actually exist. This is useful in understanding anything because the essential tools are applying properties of Real Valued Functions and Real Number Line regarding closure/openness, continuity are important in Mathematical Physics, supremum, infimum, limit superior, limit inferior, triangle inequality, Schwarz Inequality, Cauchy Inequality, distance formula, epsilon delta proofs. Differential Geometry and Partial differential Equations (existence and uniqueness)
Vector Calculus is just dealing with Stokes Theorem, Greens Theorem Divergence Theorem in N-Dimensions.
What I am surprised is that you have not had differential equations yet? I mean it's not necessary but generally everyone should have some background in it. Maybe another distinction between American Pedagogy and British Pedagogy .
It seems like with your skill set you have more of a Number Theory/Cryptography Background if you really want to be a pure Mathematician
Focus on Analysis oriented courses; Real Analysis, Complex Variables, Mathematical Statistics, ODE/Partial Differential Equations, Vector Calculus. Topology, Modern Geometry, Abstract Algebra.
all of this is pretty much applied math, decision analysis is something mainly for Operations Researchers/Actuaries.what i can pick from is:
dynamical systems
applied mathematics
numerical maths
stats 2
decision analysisLast edited by RevolutionThroughReason; 07-11-2012, 05:17 PM.
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
Ok but still this isn't pure Mathematics; it's applied, but honestly sometimes the lines between Pure and Applied are blurred, especially when it comes to Mathematical Physics and Differential Geometry.
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
Did you had vector? And linear algebra or complex variables if no they are so beautiful along with probabillity a must for everyone to know maths, they are alot and very useful
in the third year i would chose dynamical systems or numerical mathsLast edited by Afghanistan2010; 07-11-2012, 05:27 PM.High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.

LOL stop acting like you know what you're talking about.
LOLOriginally posted by Afghanistan2010 View PostIf you mean
v = dx/dt
a = dv/dt = d²x/dt²
which means,if you derivate the speed, you get the acceleration and if you derviate twice the route you get the acceleration aswell.
He is no different than us,he blindly believes in the words of other men,:
