Thank you Admin Khan. Do you agree with the name: The Ahmad Shah Abdali/Sher Shah Suri Merit Scholarship? I chose these two because they were accomplished meritorious men from both sides of the dividing line.

Today, by God's grace, I was able to determine that I had offers for my advanced training from one of the Harvard Hospitals and Washington University, both with major heart transplant and heart failure capabilities. I will make my decision in the coming month. I note this not to advertise my success, but rather to rally folks here to this cause. I strongly advocate that when you begin an effort, people should feel that they are investing in something solid and grounded. As this effort proceeds, I will begin to make my identity known and disclose my medical credentials so that any who contribute even a dollar will be able to investigate me, my affiliations, and my academic goals. Per my calculations, in about 2 and a half years I shall be able to secure enough consistent financing from my own work to give this project a shot in the arm. In the mean time, moonlighting shifts will also help, I hope.

What I will need are the contacts here. I know I said this before, but this time I mean it. In order to make this work, I plan on devoting 100% of my PF time to this effort and abandoning the vain talk I got so used to in the political forums section. My hope is that even those that have disagreed wtih me involve themselves in this work and we can forge a common link.

Here is what we need in to do, in my opinion in the coming months.

    1. I need the help of the folks here from both Afghanistan and Pakistan, with contacts familiar with the education system and the economics behind going to school in these regions to step forward. These folks should serve on an exploratory committee. I do not care what your political or religious views are; if you can help us gather the information we need, then that is all I care about.

    2. The folks in 1 should be vetted by someone like Admin Khan and should have actual strong links and an ability to maneuver/be aware in those extremely corrupt and convoluted system.

    3. Preferably, these folks will be familiar with the way engineering and medical schooling works over there and the costs associated with various institutions, from the most prestigious ones to the average ones. They will also be able to understand the entrance criteria and generalities of the education systems in both countries.

    4. Brainstorm a way to collect contributions: perhaps a paypal account controlled exclusively by Admin Khan and him alone?? Brain storm a way to keep this effort going and to sustain it.

    5. As we flesh out the information above, we can begin to think about where to advertise to a large audience of Pashtun professionals.

I will talk to Dr. Wazir and ascertain how he set up the Ayesha Wazir Merit Scholarship and how he navigated the complex waters/distrubted the funds/ensured things went according to plan.

People should understand that this is going to take a while, probably about 2-3 years to get off the ground.

As an example of a person that could help: so Luffy attends medical schooling in Pakistan... we would need someone like him to give an honest estimate of what costs a student from say the poorest Pashtun districts would face should he have the chance to attend Aga Khan. This should include estimates of reasonable boarding, books, tuition feeds etc.

Or if Toramana, being an engineer, would be able to do the same for Peshawar University.

Perhaps Laila's relatives from Nangrahar could provide us actual estimates as well.

Admin and I could probably get estimates regarding the Helmand region (e.g. if Mir Wais affiliates with the up and coming Kandahar University to start a medical school).

One need not be a doctor or an engineer.. all we need are links to respectable folks that have the ability to provide the information in question.

    • Barakzai sahab it would be very great effort but it is very difficult task. It is easy to provide scholarships for poor medical and engineering students but it is not necessary that a selected candidate for this scholarship would get admission in a governament medical college and UET (governament engineering college)..because thousands of students compete for open merit seats for medical and engineering each year and only those with highest merit (based on F.Sc and entry test marks) are able to get admission...
I would provide fee structure for mbbs of governament college in kp. I dont have info on agha khan but 5 years ago its fee was 2 million rupees for 5 years. I would try to get info on it too.

toramana is a canadian citizen, he has nothing to do with kp. A moderator here esapxai is a graduate for UET, university of enginering and technology...a governament instution of top quality

      • I was checking wall of toramana and noticed there that a female member was asking him to provide her info on admission procedure and fee of kmc and toramana was showing his helplessness because he doesnt live in KP... It hurt me alot that people here are not consulting a medical student of Kp because of his dhaal nature.
Afghans can get admission in kmc or other governament medical college of kp on the basis of foreign self finance seats or afghan national seats which are only two.
those are eligible for foreign self finance seats who have studied biology, chemistry , physics and english. Their marks in A-level (or O-level?) will be converted to equalant marks in F.Sc. Their merit will be determined by HEC not by KMU and their seats will be alloted all over pakistan on the basis of merit by HEC. That is they have different admission procedure than people with domiciles of kp for kmc.
the tuition fee is 6000 dollars per year for foriegn self finance.
You people have to contact pakistani embassy in your country, they will handle the whole admission procedure for you.
I will get info on quota seats for afghans tommarow

What do you think of this and how to do you think the problem can be solved?

From what I understand environmental estrogens are an issue...
            http://www.envtox.ucdavis.edu/cehs/TOXINS/estrogens.htm

The joke generally is that American urine is the most valuable urine because of all the vitamins secreted in it lol.

Regarding the fact that other medications are eliminated renally or through the GI tract, I am not sure what we can do about it except studies that optimize medical therapy and minimize unncessary medical therapy of any kind that offers no utility.

An environmental engineer might be more suited to answer the question.

                    Pa Khair Wrorre,

I will do all that I can to advise you. Let me talk to my colleagues who have immigrated from Canada so I can familiarize myself with the system. One thing I know for sure is that if you acquire Canadian citizenship, you can apply and seek entrance into American schools. This latter approach is something I am a strong proponent of if you can do so.

If you are new to Canada and have no citizenship yet, I will investigate the options.

                    Stay tuned.

                        • Salaam Alaykum,

Barakzai brother, after reading all 29 pages I feel as is if there is a ton of planning to do. I will plan first for getting into medical school. I will need to research some things I want to do and plan to get into medical school a bit more.

But I thought you could help me with a research topic. I love learning about other cultures especially ours and other Islamic cultures and am also interested in Afghan Women Studies. As I said in another thread I wanted to major in Global Studies and minor in BCMB.

I was thinking of doing a documentary style film of clinics or healthcare in Afghanistan. My family lives in Kabul,Ghazni, Peshawar there, I don't think I will be able to do anything in Ghazni. I have cousins going to medical schools somewhere in Nangarhar and other places. I am going for my cousins wedding in summer of 2012 so I thought it might be a great idea and it would look good on a resume for Med. School and because I will leave the USA after I am done with Medicine in the USA to practice in Afghanistan/or another third world country.

So, any topics that you think would be interesting to explore in Afghanistan or any questions that you might have? I know I want to show how medicine runs in a third would country but I want to know what you as a doctor would like to know about other cultures and these poor countries?

And Thank You Very Much, you have been a great help.

                          • I am entering my second year of Undergraduate in the fall and managed to get myself into a tough schedule of organic, physics, genetics, spanish 2, history. But I wanted to ask if anybody could recommend some MCAT books that they think are good. I need to brush up on Inorganic chemistry even though I made a A and never went to lecture I felt I didn't learn anything (they imported a chinese professor who had a strong accent).

And if you know any other materials that are helpful in preparing for MCAT I would appreciate it very much!

My kid sister is a lot closer to the MCAT than I am... she did very well by using a set of books called Exam Crackers for the MCATs. The key appears to be doing as many practice questions and practice tests as you can to get into the swing of things for the character of the test (many questions, many hours)
