  • Straight Razor Shaving!

    Hey everybody,

Just wanted to make a thread on straight razor shaving. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's shaving the old fashioned way with an open razor.

I recently started shaving with one and I think it is a way better method to shave than with safety razors. If there are any other aficionados out there, please share tips and experience.

Here is a pic of my razor. It's a Dovo Bismarck, made in Solingen, Germany. Amazing piece of work in my opinion.

    Shaving of beards

Another custom - as disgusting as the preceding or even more so to those of sound natures - with which most Muslim men have been afflicted is "grooming" oneself by shaving of one's beard in imitation of the Europeans. This has reached such a state, that some view it as a disgrace for the bridegroom to go to his new wife unless he is clean shaven! This entails numerous violations of the Sharee'ah as follows:

    A. Changing the creation of Allaah. Allaah said about Shaytaan:

{I will mislead them, and I will create in them false desires; I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and to deface the (fair) nature created by God." Whoever, forsaking God, takes Satan for a friend, hath of a surety suffered a loss that is manifest} [Soorah an-Nisaa., Aayah 119]

This is a clear and explicit text stating that modifying the creation of Allaah without His permission is obedience to the orders of the devil (Shaytaan), and disobedience to the Merciful and most Great. Thus, there can be no doubt that the curse of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) upon those women who change Allaah's creation for "beautification" mentioned previously applies to those who shave their beards thinking also that this is a form of "beautification"! So the curse applies to them as well, especially since the two issues share the common factor, as is very clear, which is described as the cause of Allaah's curse. The reason I said "without His permission" above, is so that no one would imagine that shaving of the pubic hairs and the other things mentioned under the "fitra" fall in this category of changing the creation of Allaah. Rather, these things have been allowed, nay commanded, by Allaah most High.

    B. Furthermore, it is a violation of the order of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) who said:

«Clip the moustache well, and leave the beard alone.» [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim and others]. As is well known in the science of Islaamic jurisprudence, an order from the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) means that what is being ordered is obligatory (Waajib) unless and until some secondary evidence is found which proves that what was intended by the order was a recommendation on a level less than obligatory. In the case of beards, the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) never shaved his beard, never permitted anyone else to shave theirs, and never witnessed someone with shaved beard with tacit approval. In short, all of the secondary evidence in this issue serves to reinforce the original understanding of an order from the Prophet (sallallaahu ataihi wa sallam) . i.e. That it is obligatory to let the beard grow and forbidden to shave it. The points that follow are this secondary evidence:

    C. Causing oneself to resemble the disbelievers: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'aaaihi wa sallam) said:

«Clip your moustache short and let your beard grow long, be different from the Magians.» [Muslim and Abu `Auwaana].

    D. Causing oneself to resemble women: The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) cursed men who cause themselves to resemble women and women who cause themselves to resemble men. [al-Bukhaaree, at-Tirmidhee and others]. It is clear that for a man to shave off his beard with which Allaah distinguished him from women, is one of the clearest ways in which he can cause himself to resemble a woman.

I hope the evidence which I have cited will be sufficient to convince those who have been afflicted with this transgression. May Allaah grant us and them safety from everything which He dislikes and with which He is not pleased!

Hadith - Bukhari 7:781, Narrated Ibn 'Umar Allah's Apostle said, "Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard (as it is)."

        Hadith - Muslim, Narrated AbuHurayrah
The Messenger of Allah said: Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.

        Hadith - Bukhari 9:651, Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri
The Prophet said, "There will emerge from the East some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not exceed their throats and who will go out of (renounce) the religion (Islam) as an arrow passes through the game, and they will never come back to it unless the arrow, comes back to the middle of the bow (by itself) (i.e., impossible)." The people asked, "What will their signs be?" He said, "Their sign will be the habit of shaving (of their beards)." (Fateh Al-Bari, Page 322, Vol. 17th)

        Hadith - Muwatta 51.7
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that Ata ibn Yasar told him that the Messenger of Allah was in the mosque when a man came in with dishevelled hair and beard. The Messenger of Allah motioned with his hand that he should be sent out to groom his hair and beard. The man did so and then returned. The Messenger of Allah said, "Isn't this better than that one of you should come with his head dishevelled, as if he were a shaytan?"

            Ruling on shaving the beard
What is the ruling on shaving the beard or removing part of it?

            Praise be to Allaah.
Shaving the beard is haraam because of the saheeh ahaadeeth that clearly state this, and because of the general application of texts that forbid resembling the kuffaar. One of these reports is the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Be different from the mushrikeen: let your beards grow and trim your moustaches.” According to another report: “Trim your moustaches and let your beards grow.” There are other hadeeth which convey the same meaning, which is to leave the beard as it is and let it grow long, without shaving, plucking or cutting any part of it. Ibn Hazm reported that there was scholarly consensus that it is an obligation (fard) to trim the moustache and let the beard grow. He quoted a number of ahaadeeth as evidence, including the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) quoted above, and the hadeeth of Zayd ibn Arqam in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever does not remove any of his moustache is not one of us.” (Classed as saheeh by al-Tirmidhi). Ibn Hazm said in al-Furoo’: “This is the way of our colleagues [i.e., the Hanbalis].”
Is it haraam (to shave it)? Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The Qur’aan, Sunnah and ijmaa’ (scholarly consensus) all indicate that we must differ from the kuffaar in all aspects and not imitate them, because imitating them on the outside will make us imitate them in their bad deeds and habits, and even in beliefs, which will result in befriending them in our hearts, just as loving them in our hearts will lead to imitating them on the outside. Al-Tirmidhi reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “He is not one of us who imitates people other than us. Do not imitate the Jews and Christians.” According to another version: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad) ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab rejected the testimony of the person who plucked his beard. Imaam Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamheed: “It is forbidden to shave the beard, and no one does this except men who are effeminate” i.e., those who imitate women. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had a thick beard (reported by Muslim from Jaabir). It is not permitted to remove any part of the beard because of the general meaning of the texts which forbid doing so.

                      @Eyeliner,
What about women shaving their bodies? Is it to appear more masculine? Or more acceptable to men?

I disagree since you are intentionally trying to deny. However, let me assume that women DO it for hygenic purposes than any other reason, then men could be doing it for the same reason. In fact thier case is much stronger than women.Women do not grow as big beard as men.

For body hair, a few laser sessions with the YAK laser works great, you can do just one body part, like the back, its a little painful though but some premedications can avoid the bulk of the pain. Women can laser some parts of the face as well, for men the face is usually not lasered though I have seen a few morons do that. Actually the US army pays for seals to have the whole body laser'ed.

Sangar any hadith on laser. and if God does not want his creation tampered (beard) why tamper it in the pubic area.

I do love the romance of a straight razor, even using an old fashioned shaving cream with a brush is so soothing. I used to go to this old barber and I loved the old fashioned shave. He even used a machine that warmed the shaving foam, on cold days with snow outside its a different experience. Usually though it is a shaving gel and a gillete triple blade something.
