I dont drink. I make it very clear, at appropriate moment that I don't drink or consume pig when amongst non-Muslims, so there is no confusion, no awkward moments.

If I have to be in a place such as a bar, like recently when I met an old visiting colleague, it was in a hotel bar, which was a replica of a British pub, with loud Brits, tattoos, football shirts, bellies, and pints nd pints of beer - I was so uncomfortable. Met my colleague, made excuse for quick departure without causing awkward moment, and high talked out of there.

Now embarrassing is when I meet Muslims who are drinkers. I was in Jordan where quite few Jordanians openly enjoyed their whiskey. They considered it as another sin that they chose to partake. One guy suggesting that there are many other sins people indulge in, like getting involved in interest based loans, or illicit affairs getting physical, but quietly hushed, or dishonesty, and they say everyone is selective as to what they priorities to meet the needs of illicit indulgences in life.

Similarly, and surprised, was when I met muslim Turks drinking without a hint of remorse, or Saudi, pakistani and Pashtun who drink but at least trying to do it less openly. The risk takers who break the rules - forgetting who's rules they are breaking!!!!!
I think we are selective in what we do that is sinful. If we really want to indulge we overlook the sin. If the action is not high on our priority of desire, we lambast it as sin.

Don't do it. And don't go down bravado drive owing up. Cover your sins, refrain from the sins.

I hate the tastes of all of them, except the flavored ones and some beer.

Red wine has the worst taste imo.
If I have some money left from the expenditures, I like to drink Jack Daniels. I can afford to buy 1Lt bottle in two months, unfortunately. But normally, in my everyday life, I drink lots of Heineken, Dutch beer.

              JD is class.

Heineken is ok, Budwieser is better and Foster's is the best.
The worst beer I have ever drank is Zubr (Polish with 9% alcohol).
              I hate Carlsburg.

Once I have benn drinking, but now for almost longer period I stopped. Alcohol (at least in its concentrated form - because fruit also contains a bit alcohol), is a sickness to consume and destroy yourself, even if you do it in small quantities.
IT does not bring anything good and has a horrible taste.

                      Yes, I agree.

I drank many times in my life. First in Pakistan, where it is presented as a forbidden fruit. Then, in England where you can drink however much you want, I drank for the first year instead of working, studying, etc. I was drinking with European friends all day and night. I stopped drinking soon. The last time I drank was on my birthday last year, because my cousin insisted and I plan on enslaving him in the future (yes, literally). With alcohol, I am not a decent or pleasant person, there is no telling what I would do if I get drunk.

Alcoholism is a terrible disease, I have seen what it can do to people and their families, escpecially to young children who are dependant on their parents, who in turn depend on alcohol... Sad.

Alcohol is a horrible tasting thing with nothing but ill effects - that is why it is haraam, all that is harmful is haraam.

From an age of 8 I grew up in the West, where alcohol is something so important to the youth, I cannot say I ever liked it but sometimes I consumed it, however when you understand what it is You won't take it anymore.
Like one of our scholars say "Spirit drinks the one who has no spirit himself".
That is exactly true, alcohol is for weak, as every drug, and makes people more weak. As any drug it is a form of enslavement of the mind.

It is great that Islam has noticed that !

Its a big part of Western life and its an unnecessary one.

Drug addicts are those who find comfort in something that is not real.

I am addicted to nicotine (tobacco), the second worst thing.

Say, "My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know."

The Holy Qur`an also says that Allah, the Almighty has purchased life and property of all the Believers in return for the heaven.
Moreover, Allah, the Exalted is not only the Creator but also the Sustainer, Nourisher, Ruler and Lawgiver of mankind.
Hence, the human being is the property of the Lord. He is also an asset to his religion and his Ummah (the Muslim nation).
His life, health, wealth, and all that Allah has bestowed upon him are a trust with him, which he is not permitted to diminish.
Thus, as a general rule of the Islamic Shari`ah a Muslim cannot consume anything that may cause death, either quickly or gradually, hence, he cannot eat or drink anything like poison or any substance injurious to health.
In Islam even gluttony is not permissible for it may cause disease or death.
Man is not his master in its entirety; he is a slave to a Master who not only creates but wants to keep him alive for a fixed period.
Hence, man has no choice but to live as long as his Creator and Lord decides.
He cannot, therefore, do anything that may put his life to danger. It is because of this fact that nobody is allowed commit suicide.

                                Allah, the Almighty says:
“.... Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah hath been to you Most Merciful." Q. 4:29

                                He also says:
“…And make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction.” Q. 2:195

And His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Do not harm yourself or others." Ahmad and Ibn Majah.”

Tobacco is proved injurious to health, its use may be declared haaram according to the texts of the Qur`an and hadith quoted above. Especially, when physician forbids a person tobacco smoking in any form. And since wasting of property (Bukhari) is forbidden by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) its use should also be prohibited. If the consumption of tobacco leads to wastage of money, without serving any religious purpose, it should invite total ban without any hitch.
