    Wrong !
even in small amounts it is not that much useful for health , the only medical use of it is to act as sedative in small doses.

p.s before demanding proof, evidences blah blah from me, keep in mind that i am a medical student who listen and learn from his lectures.

Hmm... well, you should know one VERY important thing about me, bro: I'm not one of those people who fall for what others say JUST because what they say may be related to their careers. In other words, I don't care if you're a doctor; I still need proof (Besides, you gotta ACT like a doctor to receive the respect that a doctor expects from others.)

Your being a doctor means nothing if you can't back up anything you say medicine-related. I go to a university with a top medical school in the U.S. It's also a leading research university not just in medicine but in a plethora of other fields as well. That's just so you know that your being a doctor or medical student doesn't mean that the rest of us aren't doctors or don't have access to knowledgeable or expert doctors, OR that you can say ANYTHING you want about medicine or the human body just because you're a medical student.

For now, due to an extreme lack of time, I'll only direct you to online sources to prove your claim that alcohol is bad even if taken in small amounts wrong. In a little while, however, I can direct you to books where I've read that drinking in SMALL, moderate amount is actually beneficial.

For the online sources, consider the following:

Studies show, for example, that health benefits only come with moderate drinking and are greatest for older men. And even moderate drinking is not recommended for women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, or for people who are under 21.

I mean, this is like common knowledge. Drinking is harmful only when abused, JUST like everything else.

      One more.
"Alcohol use: Why moderation is Key.
Can alcohol benefit your health? It depends on how much you drink.

Moderate alcohol use seems to offer some health benefits, particularly for the heart." (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alcohol/SC00024)

There's tons more online. Just type in in ANY search engine "benefits and harms of drinking alcohol" and you'll see.

Now it's your turn to provide evidence for your claim that it's harmful even in moderate amounts. I'll be waiting.

Of course, I forgot to add ... as a medical student, you MUST be using sources to get your knowledge, right? So why don't you share with us those sources? That's all I ask for. Nothing much :D

I was not boasting about my field, i meant to say that dont demand proofs from me (as i am aware of your habit) as i learn things from class lectures or text books, i do not check other things on internet except this forum and news sites as i do not have my own internet connection.

Check the book "basic and clinical pharmacology" by Bertram G. Katzung , chapter "alchols" page 368.
You can also check "pharmacology" by H.P.Rang and M.M.Dale ,chatper "non-therapeutic drugs" page 877.

I have given you source from a world widely in use text medical books and you know books are more reliable than an article on internet. All you have to do now is to check this book in library and read.

Members here should keep in mind that ethanol despite having use in sedative-hypnotics in small doses is considerd as drug of abuse and has no place in therapy.
In contrast to its one use, its harmful effects are so many and scary. Even its use in small quantity is not recommended as sensation they produce are enjoyable, creating urge to repeat it, leading to its addiction.

That way, you have someone in the middle and neither's on the extreme side (i.e., "I never drink" and "I'm addicted to drinking").
As I mentioned earlier, yes, I do plan on a drinker and non-drinker. A frequent Tavern visitor is the wording I used in an earlier post. Thank you for the reminder.

Of course, since you are doing this research IN Australia, I think you should focus on Aussie statistics. Good luck!!
I will do just that. BUT my article is aimed at getting the tavern to change its ways basically, by referring to a recent incident which resulted in two university student losing their life. I have to keep in mind I must stick to the angle, and really, as much as it sounds 1000-1500 words is really not enough. All this side, Iam worried sick. I rang up everywhere to do my interviews today and EVERYWHERE was closed. Starting from uni to the Dept of Health. I *really* didn't know it was a public holiday today. I only have two days to do them basically, one day wait I have to give to phone calls and them being returned.

All your (all members) suggestions have helped a lot. I can not thank you enough. Allah Bless you

Yeah, me, too. I rarely rely on the internet for sources (in fact, for my research papers, my teachers don't even permit online sources unless there's absolutely NO printed source available for whatever I need citations for!).

But I was asking you to cite the books -- your "textbooks" that tell you that drinking alcohol even in small amounts is absolutely destructive for the human body and mind and all -- so that I can verify them myself. I'm still waiting, just so you know And it's actually VERY good to hear that people here know my habit of always asking for evidence for any claims they make, especially when they can be very conveniently refuted :D Good job, folks!

Paying the tab: the economics of alcohol policy By Philip J. Cook

Sure thing. But can you do me the happy favor of just typing for me what exactly your books say? Just like what I'm about to do below. (If your books are only telling the harms, then don't bother, though, 'cause that's already obvious. We're talking about benefits here, not harms.)

Paying the tab: the economics of alcohol policy by Philip J. Cook. Page 108, chapter 7. It reads:

“Despite this litany of problems, however, the health consequences of drinking are not all bad. That there are substantial long-terms benefits of drinking, a possibility largely ignored by epidemiologists until the 1970s, is now widely accepted. The main health benefits appear to be prevention of coronary heart disease and stroke. These and other cardiovascular disease are the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 40% of all deaths (nearly one million per year), so that even a relatively small reduction is noteworthy (Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2004a).”

I mean, NO ONE can deny the harms of drinking *too much* -- in other words, abusing your drinking ability and power can deteriorate one's health, no doubt about it. BUT I find it amusing that we're sitting here denying that alcohol actually HAS some benefits as well, if taken in appropriate amounts.

Want more proof? Check out the Quran. It tells us that there are harms AND benefits in drinking alcohol BUT that its harms overshadow its benefits.

"They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say: 'In them is great harm, and some profit, for humans; but the harm is greater than the profit.'"

That would be verse 2:219. Check it out yourself.

So, yeah, there ARE benefits of drinking, whether you like to believe it or not. Its benefits for the heart are like the most widely discussed, man.

You're telling me its harms, and I don't deny that. But you're COMPLETELY denying that drinking alcohol has benefits, dude.

Perhaps there are a few benefits to drinking small amounts of alcohol, but the harms of it completely out-weigh the benfits, which is why it's haraam (forbidden).

Becoming an alcoholic doesn't happen straight away, it starts in little amounts (a glass of wine a day?) and gradually builds.

But this is an entirely different topic in itself, forgive the derailing Mesbah.

Essentials of pharmacology page 135 "Many clinical studies have shown that moderate alchol drinking prevents coronary heart disease and this even reduces death rate in such patients. But controversy exists about this finding and many authorities think that this decrease in the incidence of coronary heart disease may not be related to the moderate drinking of alchol and other factors may be important"
