  • French police corner Al-Qaeda suspect after shootings

TOULOUSE, France - Shots rang out Wednesday as French police surrounded a self-declared member of the Al-Qaeda network holed up in a house after a series of shooting attacks that shocked the nation.

Police sources told AFP that officers investigating three attacks in which a gunman killed three soldiers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi sealed off an address in the Cote Pavee residential district of Toulouse.

Six or seven shots rang out, an AFP reporter at the scene said, but the area had been sealed off by police from the RAID special weapons squad and it was not immediately clear whether the siege was over.

"The suspect's mother was brought to the scene. She was asked to make contact with her son, to reason with him, but she did not want to, saying she had little influence on him," Interior Minister Claude Gueant said.

"This person has made trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the past ... and says he belongs to Al-Qaaeda and says wanted to avenge Palestinian children and to attack the French army," Gueant said, as the operation continued.

Briefing reporters near the scene, Gueant said that the suspect's brother had been arrested. Anti-terror prosecutors said several operations were underway. Two police were slightly wounded as the raids got underway.

A source close to the inquiry said earlier that the suspect had exchanged words with the RAID team and had declared himself to be a member of Al-Qaeda, the armed Islamist group founded by late Saudi extremist Osama bin Laden.

He is thought to be a 24-year-old man who had previously travelled to the lawless border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan which is known to house al-Qaeda safehouses, one of the officials told AFP.

"He was in the DCRI's sights, as were others, after the first two attacks," an official said, referring to France's domestic intelligence service, adding: "Then the criminal investigation police brought in crucial evidence."

Another source close to the inquiry said police were confident they had tracked down the right suspect and added: "He's one of those people who have come back from warzones that always worry the intelligence services."

If the suspect is proved to have been responsible for the killings, it would bring to an end one of the most intense manhunts in French history and help calm tensions after the series of attacks disrupted a presidential election.

The shootings began on March 11, when a paratrooper of North African origin arranged to meet a man in Toulouse to sell him a scooter which he had advertised online, revealing in the ad his military status.

Imad Ibn Ziaten, a 30-year-old staff sergeant in the 1st Airborne Transportation Regiment, was shot in the head at close range with a .45 calibre pistol, a method that was to become the suspect's signature.

Four days later three more paratroopers from another regiment were gunned down -- two of them fatally -- in the same fashion in a street in the garrison town of Montauban, 45 kilometres (29 miles) away.

The dead -- Corporal Abel Chennouf, 25, and Private First Class Mohammed Legouade, 23, both of the 17t Parachute Engineering Regiment -- were French soldiers of North African Arab origin.

Arab soldiers are prized targets for groups like Al-Qaeda, which regards Muslims who fight for Western armies as traitors.

Then on Monday the shooter, still wearing a motorcycle helmet and riding a scooter, attacked the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse, killing a religious studies teacher, his toddler sons and a seven-year-old girl.

Anti-terrorist magistrates said the same gun and and make of scooter was used in all three attacks and noted that the three attacks were carried out at precise four-day intervals.

On Wednesday, the bodies of the four Jewish victims arrived in Israel.

Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, his sons Arieh, 5, and Gabriel, 4, and seven-year-old Miriam Monsonego arrived at Ben Gurion international airport near Tel Aviv shortly before daw. They were to be buried later in the day.

The slain French soldiers were also to be buried later in the day, in Montauban, at a ceremony to be attended by Presidency Nicolas Sarkozy and his Socialist rival for the presidency Francois Hollande.

Both men temporarily suspended their campaigns following Monday's attack, as France was traumatised by an unprecedent series of hate crimes. The first round of the vote is due on April 22, with a run-off on May 6.

Look at this idiot making it seem like afghans had something to do with these killings. Afghans don't need revenge, we want justice. Don't you dare make it seem like some idiot walking in to a school and shooting a Jewish family justifies what happened to those 16 innocent afghans. We don't want to have anything to do with such individuals. You do your own **** and then blame afghans for it. I don't care where this idiot is from or what form of religion he belives in but he needs to be punished as severely as any other murdere who is responsible for killing innocent people regardless of who or what they might have been.
Go celebrate at an Arab forum. Our people have been misled and misjudged enough as it is.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

Only cowards glorify and praise cowardice, Al Hanif, are you defending, glorifying and praising the murder of children?

Who said any of us are "silent" about that; you're making a false dilemma. And when is killing kids on a school playground in France, "resisting"?

You are saying im making a false dillema while in the next sentence you ask me if killing kids on a school playground is resistance,i never claimed or condoned that and wish the perpetrator be severlt punished.
But you are pretty vocal at demonising muslims of this forum by calling them wahabis and you also demonise afghans who resist occupation of their land.to justify this you bring up a un report that claims that afghan independent forces are killing more civilians and you take that report as if it were verse of the quran.

Then why are you trying to divert focus off the murder of children by bringing another murder into the picture? What was your intention were you trying to shift focus or draw some moral justification for the acts? It has to be one of the two.

Again you commit a false dilemma, Where have I said that All Muslims are Wahhabis? Many Muslims are not Wahhabi. I am Muslim and not Wahhabi. Wahhabism refers to people who espouse a certain set of ideas, which they CLAIM is from Islam but we find no conclusive evidence that can be directly lifted from Islam but more from a narrative passed on by those who they misguidedly refer to as Scholars, and these scholars are mainly deviants in the Gulf region.

Actually I have never demonized anyone for resisting imperialist invasion; I demonize individuals who murder their own civilians CLAIMING that they're doing it to resist, as an excuse for their crimes. That's a huge difference. The issue of Afghan deaths is an obvious one, if a suicide bomber attacks a Bazaar to get a NATO Humvee, the Bomb he detonates in such a place does not avoid contact with Muslims and just focuses on a Humvee, it kills everyone in its blast radius, Muslim and Infidel alike. Such an act is cowardly and should always be demonized.

The killing and murder of children is not part of the resistance and is never to be attributed to the Islamic emirate nor should such acts be tolerated, the world is aware of the crimes carried out by the israeli terrorists and their silent is their support.

Of course they do, what does my fighting them or not fighting them have to do with it? This is a diversion on your part.

? are you saying that the deaths of Saudi manufactured fanatics is equal to the deaths of children playing in a play ground? I am not sure what you're trying to say here.

It is a false attribution that this guy is related to Islam or has an intention of fighting or carring out revenge for the sake of islam.

This is directed in demonizing islam.
