Is believing that Allah is One and Muhammad is His messenger enough? Or is there more?

Technically speaking, yes. That's all you need.

        @jasmine

That is understood. I plan on following it in letter and in spirit. Do I have to be part of any group or sect, that is what I am asking?

          ^I like your answer.

Which sect would you recommend, is there a sect that teaches tolerance? I believe that real spiritual progress can only be made with tolerance.

It's hard to fully comprehend what you say, but I do get the gist of it.

So, in other words, you must accept a sect, correct?

Well, I believe that you must belong to a sect or a group. Islam is a very rich concept; and, for there to be an absence of organization is totally absurd. It would render Islam nullified.

I believe that there must be authority, hence a sect or a group.

Most of the people on this forum are so intolerant towards one another. There must be a group that is tolerant due to its organizational structure.

The search continues, until then we'll just keep inquiring.

Instead of using a random forum with a bunch of random people with no qualification what so ever on Islam, why dont you go and contact proper Islamic institutions where scholars can give you answers. Today you can email practically anybody.

You said earlier in another thread that you are a scholar yourself. And that you have thoroughly studied Quran.

yet you ask questions like the one you aksed in the beginning of this thread.

Sects are not created to have a system of authority or organization.

Sects have emerged after later generations of Muslims became arrogant and claimed to know better than the early generations. As a result you have people who are mixing Zoroastrianism, Aristotelian metaphysics, Hinduism, Bhuddism, Mills Utilitarianism etc into Islam claiming they are wise and knowledgeable and moderate. And reject clear and unquestionable quranic verses that contradict their innovations.

The innate quality of a scholar is that he asks questions.

You seem to know the answer to everything, so why are you bothered by questions?

Now with respect to what you are trying to communicate:

Sects are not created to have a system of authority or organization.

Sects have emerged after later generations of Muslims became arrogant and claimed to know better than the early generations. As a result you have people who are mixing Zoroastrianism, Aristotelian metaphysics, Hinduism, Bhuddism, Mills Utilitarianism etc into Islam claiming they are wise and knowledgeable and moderate. And reject clear and unquestionable quranic verses that contradict their innovations.
Instead of putting all of your ideas in a blender and expect me to decipher what you have said, be more coherent and articulate your ideas. Otherwise, it seems to me that you have no clue yourself of what you are saying.

So, let us try this again:

What group within Islam best represents the depth of Islam, and on the same token is able to protect the beliefs of others, the reasons for which Muslims fought to establish their ideological rights in the first place?

rather then asking laymen why don't you send him an email, scholar to scholar.

Al-Islam.org by the Ahlul Bayt DILP - Home I personally would recommend you to visit this site, and click on "Explore Shi'a Sunni" or you can also click on the "Explore Islam" tab. This is a great site with great resources in different languages.
And you can also visit this site Islam and Muslims: to learn more about Sunni Islam from their perspective.
I posted two links to remain objective.

After doing the research, I am sure you can select a group for yourself.

Are you talking about Abdus Salam? He was an Ahmadi? What do you mean by liberated?

                              Need to research on Ahmadis.
