I've read both of the studies. But analyze this; Most men think of multiple women ALL the time. I do, most of the men I know do. Women only think of other men "some" of the time. So while it's only natural to find someone appealing. This shows greater regulation of female behavior than male behavior. Also anatomically we see that humans evolved differently; some species can female can be partnered with numerous males and have simultaneous offspring from them at one time. Statistically speaking in the Human species females generally cannot do that (there are exceptions though), it is only one male who can fertilize them. This also bottlenecks reproduction.

Also your scenario where a female will keep a male to have children with and cheat on her partner. Is precisely what I'm referring to. Those women eventually were discovered, because often those would lead to pregnancy. And humans were able to identify by physical appearance who the father is. Those women eventually lost in breeding and the more faithful women stayed in the breeding pool more.
