  • Mawlid or Milad (an Nabi)

When is Milad-an-Nabi or Mohammad(s) birth day?
Is it a bida or not?
Which muslim countries commonly celebrate Mawlid/Milad?
    How do you celebrate Milad?

Growing up the, the qari in the masjid would start referring to it more around rabialawal. when I lived in KSA, there was no mention of it. When I was in UK, the muslims I met, Pakistanis, Banglas, the celebrated mawlid. In Germany, the muslims I met, Turks, they celebrated it. Here in UAE, again, low key event.

    Clarifications please.

It is Milad un Nabi which is on the 4th of Febrauray 2012 its on the 12th of RabiulAwwal,i know there are differents of opinion, but yet i do not celebrate it you ask me why this has many reasons : let me begin with some important reasons.

1.This is the same day when the Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) passed away.
2.His companions did not celebrate it.
3.It is regarded as Bidah to celebrate this day.
4.We would be alike the Nasara ( Christians),they do celebrate the day of the Prophet Jesus (pbuh).
5.The Prophet (pbuh) told us not to behave like the disbelieving people.

It is mostly unknown to the muslims,it is a bidah invented by some radical elements.

But the scholars of Al Azhar agreed on this (so called celebration) with limits,it is allowed to give islamic lecture on this day specially about the prophet (pbuh) and no celebrations or anything else. This is all what they said.

It is low key in the UAE, though in contrast to my time in Qatar, it is acknowledged as a public holiday.

To be honest, the first time I became 'aware' of Milad was when I was in Rawalpindi and they had derwaishes out and a carnival in town.

Yes there is difference of opinion on this but I personally say that if it was so important then Sahaba kiraam R.A would have celebrated it but none of them did though they were the ones who loved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him the most.
I think we should celebrate his every day of life with good deeds and should live our each day the day He (pbuh) lived.
I think it is hypocrisy and show off to celebrate just one day and forget about him for the rest of the year.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has given a fatawaa against this celebration on their website.

According to crescentwatch.org, Jan 24th was the first day of Rabi` al-Awwal, and so the 12th should be on Feb 4th.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) himself commemorated the day of his birth, according to the hadith. Based upon this and other hadiths and Qur'anic verses, the majority of scholars have said that celebrating the Mawlid is permissible. Even if it is a bid`a, i.e. something new and innovated, it is a praiseworthy innovation (bid`a hasana). In the Shari`a, innovations (bid`a) fall under the five headings of law (the obligatory, unlawful, recommended, offensive, and permissible). And so not all innovations are unlawful.

The vast majority of Muslims around the world celebrate the mawlid, as they have celebrated for hundreds of years. One can find videos of mawlid celebrations on YouTube from all over the Muslim world. Some celebrations are grand while others are smaller. And it is not just celebrated on this particular day, but throughout the year. In Afghanistan, there are special Mawlud Sharif gatherings in the masjids where scholars speak on the life of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and na`at is sung, and people make and distribute sweet dishes.

You can find several answers and articles related to the Mawlid at SunniPath.com, SeekersGuidance.org, and masud.co.uk.

If you bring this hadith i will shave off my long beard.
Bring me a single fatawaa based on Ahadith and Quranic ayats which makes this bida permissible.

There is nothing wrong giving lectures, but the rest is to be cut off,it is bidah and The Prophet (pbuh) said :Every new inovation is bidah and every bidah is wrong guidance and every wrong guidance is in hell (sahih hadith reported by Ayesha (may Allah be pleaesed with her)

Sunnipath contains fatawaaa that goes against several ahadiths of the prophet (pbuh) like seeking help from the graves.

It is a innovation and all respected Scholars have stated this, however some conclude that it is a "good innovation" and thus under certain terms approve of it.

There is no good innovation except which was allowed by the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions.

Wrora, this is sincere advice. Please humble yourself. If you want to acquire a deep understanding of Islam, go and seek it with an open and sincere heart from those who have a chain of transmission to the Prophet sallaLlahu `alayhi wa sallam in sacred knowledge. Pa khudai di mi kasam wi, internet forums and youtube videos and such will do nothing other than make you one-sided and eventually either stubborn, confused or burned-out. Just think about it, acquiring knowledge in such a manner is so against the methodology of the Sunnah and the traditional approach that no wonder it is so devoid of barakah and leads to only more confusion. So please, and I only speak from my mistakes and experience, have a sense of accountability when typing because this is the religion of Allah and not of any scholar or group. Please don't take offense, this is as much of a reminder for myself as it is for everyone else.

As for the mawlid, there are GIANTS, and I can't do justice to the word giants, on both sides of the issue. And I'm not talking about contemporary scholars. Therefore, one should stick with whichever position one finds stronger and leave it at that. Insults and criticism are not needed.

From what I've observed, I assume that you are a follower of the noble Deoband tradition. Here is an article by Shaykh Taha Karaan (Allah preserve him) who graduated from Darul Uloom, Deoband and resides in South Africa currently and follows Shafi`i fiqh. He is an open supporter of the mawlid.

In this clip, Shaykh Taha explains the mawlid from around 9 minutes although the whole clip is very beneficial.

The Beloved Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, so beautifully advised his nation when he said:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day let him speak good or remain silent.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Can you show me a single hadees or any other statement in which it is said Sahaba kiraam R.A used to celebrate this day ?
