  • Is love what we think it is?

I tried writing a love poem. It didn’t work. Despite the fact that this is an agenda advanced in many spaces, I was not able to produce a word or two in this regard. For many, this is a topic of choice, one of ease. How do they craft such excellence with no or very little experience in what they call the’ realm of love’?

That is one thing. The other, to me, is that the definition of love has changed. To say it is changing would mean a head dug deep and ignorant to this concept.

And the other is that love, like a tree stands tall and has roots and branches, all of which yield a different fruit; sweet, sour and bitter. And so, what does it mean to love? Is love the topic that is silenced over tea? Is love the idea of indulging in physical pleasure? Is love only defined by the companionship of a man and woman? Is love a sickness that destroys the heart and leads to evil and immorality?

dont over analyze it, when it happens you will know. when it happens it will probably be hard to summarize it in a post.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

One of the responses I expected and thus the question of the thread: Is love what we think it is? I do think this concept needs analyzing and intend to reveal my ideas over time. You see, what if this love has already happened? What then, of its analysis? What does it mean to love? And do we take love as seriously as we should be taking it?

liking someone beyond reason is probably the biggest simplification i can give it.

But is love simple? And is it merely liking someone?

of course this involves complicated actions in the brain, if you really want to get to the heart of it. there is a difference between infatuation and love, the lines of which become blurred sometimes.

love between family, mates, potential mates, religion, and ideals comes in different shades. take for example the love of a parent to the love of a mate, its different but the same. as one type of love developed through a lifetime, the other develops through common ground and eventually a bond which you feel cannot be shared by anyone else but this one person.

in the end, love is always the same. its about why you love and how you got there that is different.

            ps, i hate most people.

Quite right. I like the idea of different shades. Similar to the parable of the tree I used in my initial post. I wonder at loving on a common ground and the question of why one loves. I think they have deeper and more stronger foundations and so, more thought provoking answers and are hinting at intent in the original post. You're getting there.

We haven't yet unraveled love, we'll leave hating aside for now, tsenga?

lol i am not deep enough to unravel the depths of our capacity to love as a species and the why and how. these questions are as deep as human understanding of self awareness and conciousness, which to this day are debated by scientists.

i take my self as an example on the subject of love. i love my parents for raising me, the muslims in my family, and the muslims worldwide. this is the extent of my love, i am not reckless and naive enough to love everything and everyone. you can say i love my parents because of the bond i shared with them growing up, something that can't be replicated elsewhere. whereas i love the muslims for sharing the same ideals as i do and worshiping the same god.

as for non muslims/secularists in my family, i do not love them but i do care for them as long as they are not outwardly anti islam. though i would not consider this love, it is more of an obligation. if we were not related by blood, that obligation would not be there.

Another question maybe, and I continue in English to involve everyone, what does the idea of love being blind mean? I understand the language of love, as they call it, is spoken differently by every individual, however, I wonder why the association of this concept is only linked with a union of individuals of different genders. Surely, there is more to it. And, is it changing?

love evolves as much as society and humans do. many mindless westerners love money, food, and self gratification. it all hits the pleasure points in their brains. these pleasure points are conditioned to be pleasure points rather than "sin points" because of years of conditioning. what gratifies a non muslim may horrify a muslim.

the idea of love can be static or ever changing. i prefer the static version, as it is more constant than human wants. love is faith and faith is love. i believe love is relative to your faith.

Bingo! Well said, in particular the latter part. Very well said. So now, after much conferring, is love limited to liking someone?

Surely, there is much more to love than we know, much to discover, as we grow.

well i think that depends on many things. in people relations (especially boy-girl), do we like someone out of friendship, a bond of similarities or because we expect something more than that?

from personal experiences and what our faith lays out before us, love is not cheap and shouldn't be confused with liking someone. this is why there are no games like dating in islam, as love is sure and if we doubt its sureity (dont even know if thats a word) then we are doubting our very selves.

that is the intimate love part of it all, but i have to say since becoming religious i have found myself loving people i have never of considered as brothers or sisters before. its a great thing.

I'll address the part in your post that relates to the intent of this threads creation. My purpose of analysis is to obtain a deeper understanding of the different priorities in this regard. I end with questions, not answers, because I am looking for more and perhaps want to share more over time.

You mention religion, a twist, I like that. If yours, in some cases, comes down to this as a backbone, what can one conclude about the sources of love? Inborn, with the soul, developed, in the heart, or understood, by the brain? And which is stronger?

the capacity is inborn, its realization comes to being with understanding of God and self which is manifested through the mind and the soul. or rather responsible realization so as not to cheapen the idea of love.

at least thats what i think but what do i know lol
