the Pashtuns who have trouble with "ph" and "f" only have this with words that begin with "f" sound. f is in the middles of the word it is pronounced correctly. In my whole life I have never heard old, young or what ever Pashtun saying Aphghan, I did hear people saying Paisal, instead of faisal. There is diffrence.

As was discussed before in another thread, the letter ف was a later addition to Pashto language so the loanwords from Arabic can be pronounced . Can anyone find a pure Pashto word which contains letter ف?

Although I'm not from Kandahar, in Kandari Pashto, people generally say words with F with a P.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

I just wrote 'Afghanistan' on a peice of paper and told the Pashtun security guard in my building which is originally from Mutta in KPK to read it. He said Avghanistan.. Told him say it again, he said Avghanistan.. Said ok one more time slowly, he said Av..ghaaan..istaan. Now let's add this into the mix.

"Ferishta " as ferishta.........
Unlike Paktia, the area youre from has more educational institutions. People that learn to say "Fay", they do so in school. People that have gone to school can say the "Fay" sound, and people that did not can not say it. My aunt has learnt to read the Quran in childhood and can say "Fay." But she still says Peeqir because her peers say it that way and she says Perishta even though she can pronounce it the Arabic way, she does what her peers do. My mom on the other hand who never learnt to read the Quran and never went to school can not say the "Fay" sound no matter how hard she tries. The speech muscles in your mouth determine how you pronounce words and the sounds in the language that you grow up with determines this.

When I naturally say it, that is how I pronounce it even though I can pronounce the "Fay" sound. But our old people can not say the "V" sound.

The earliest mention of the name Afghan (Abgân) is by Shapur I of the Sassanid Empire during the 3rd century CE,[5][9][10] which is later recorded in the 6th century in the form of "Avagāṇa" (अवगाण)[11] by the Indian astronomer Varāha Mihira in his Brihat-samhita

Pronunciations differ from region to region. I might get that some Pashtuns pronounce "f" as "p", that only ever happens at the beginning of a word. Never once will you hear a Pashtun say "Apghan" or "Awghan".

Thats has more to do with how people see that names and not becuase they have dificulty with the "f" sound, maybe it started like that, but I also heared people say "Apridi" but could say correctly "Faisal", thats becuase they heared so many times "Apridi" that they think it is the corect way to prenounce it. And yes I also hear a lot of Pashtuns use p instead of f when speaking. But I never heard "Aphghan", like siriously khushal is retarded.

What evidence? Providing an anecdote of one or two Pashtuns who can't pronounce "f" doesn't mean all Pashtuns can't pronounce "f". If you can't pronounce ف, it is your problem, not a problem that can be labelled on all Pashtuns.
