Pakistan army launches assault in tribal area
Army says "comprehensive operation" launched in North Waziristan, killing fighters linked to Karachi attack.

Pakistan says it has launched a "comprehensive operation" against armed groups in the northwestern tribal region bordering Afghanistan, after killing scores of fighters in air raids.

If the history of (Na)Pak Army's counterinsurgency operations in South Waziristan and other agencies of FATA is any guide, let me predict what is going to be the result of the Army operations in North Waziristan (launched yesterday):

1. All 'good' Talibans (who are carrying the dirty work of (Na)Pak Army in Afghanistan or India) will be given safe passage.

2. Innocent people from the area will be slaughtered in indiscriminate bombing and their killing will be shown as those of 'insurgents' and 'miscreants' (Note: Pak Army never uses the term 'terrorist' even for the 'bad' Talibans!). No independent media or other organizations would be allowed to verify if those killed were really the terrorists or it were simply the commission war crimes committed against innocent people (as (Na)Pak army has done in the past).

3. Thousands of houses and hundreds of villages will be wiped out from the surface of the earth. (Remember what happened in South Waziristan!).

4. The Utmanzai Wazir and Dawar tribes would be displaced from their houses / areas and start living a wretched life as IDPs in camps in the settled areas. They would not be allowed to enter Sindh or Punjab and in KP they will looked down upon with suspicion. They will live as IDPs for an indefinite period (Note: the Mahsud tribes, evicted from South Waziristan as a result of an eye-wash military operation in October 2009, are still languishing as IDPs in the settled areas!).

5. The political parties that make hue and cry over the killing the most dangerous terrorists by American drones (calling them 'innocent' civilians) would remain tight-lipped over the killings of innocent civilians by the (Na)Pak army. There will be no protest. There will only be praise showered on the (Na)Pak army for the operation.

6. Not a single terrorists worth his name would be killed or captured as a result of this operation. (We still do not have the name of any important terrorists having been killed by the army in its numerous past eye-wash operations)

7. All Punjab based sectarian and anti-India terrorist groups would be given safe passage to get out of North Waziristan and go back to their homes. No operation of any kind would be launched against them in Punjab or other cities of Pakistan. [Note: (a) the present PML(N) government has electoral alliances with these groups; (b) They are necessary for doing the dirty work of (Na)Pak army in India and Saudi Arabia's dirty work against the Shias of Pakistan; and (c) as one General put it, operation against them in Punjab 'would be like awakening an angry elephant from slumber' that would destroy the peace of Punjab - and that should never happen in any event no matter if the rest of Pakistan burns!!].

8. This operation is not the result of or will follow any change in (to use Christine Fair's term) the strategic culture of Pakistan Army.

Having enumerated the possible (in my opinion inevitable) consequences of the present operation in North Waziristan, I pray if am proven wrong! One thing is clear Pushtun blood will spill!!

Very depressing albeit realistic analysis Toramana especially based on actual facts.

1. The PML-N does indeed have an electoral alliance with the Taliban i.e. the Punjabi Taliban or groups sympathetic to Lashkar i Jhangvi.

2. Punjabi militant groups enjoy the patronage of the Pakistan army.

3. The saddest thing is that many Pashtuns of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could actually care less about tribals of FATA or the 2 million Pashtun refugees.

Pakistanis use the "Islam" card and "Muslim Brotherhood" card for many purposes including against Bengalis but what happened to Muslim brotherhood if a Pashtun refugee cannot even enter the Punjab?

A Pakistani Muslim citizen cannot go to a whole province of Pakistan.

Not a village, a district but a whole province.

I really don't know what will happen and when all this misery will end but I think the US essentially allows the Pakistanis/Punjabis to do all this.

I still consider them terrorists. I am against the operation because it is more of a war of imperialism in which the people of Waziristan are treated like colonized people to be subject to all humiliation, massacre, destruction of property. Were this carried out in a transparent manner involving local people and other Pukhtuns then it would be genuine.

This is what happened to the Kharoti tribe who lived in Waziristan around the twenties, caused by fighting with the British. My family and a lot of Kharots would go on to IDP camps in Ghazni (where one of my grandpa was born in 1926). Later they moved, settled, and became sucessful in Kabul.

Other Kharots moved to Karachi were they also became sucessful.

That being said, I am the sole ruler of Waziristan and will take what belongs to me in the future, inshallah.

North Waziristan especially Razmak,Spinwam and Shawal has alot of tourism potential.

Shawal is incredibly cold as compared to the other adjacent region's and People will surely opt for summer stay in these region's.

Time to clean them from the terrorist and develop them on the pattern of swat
