This Qais theory has no historical foundation. Just conjectures. Pashtuns are Aryan tribes living in Pashtunland from eternity being the original Aryans. They were Buddhists or Hindus( both were overlapping in past) or even non religious nomadic people practicing Pashtunwali.

At the time of Mehmood of Ghazna, Saljuks and during the Arabs attacks on Central Asia they were forcefully converted not like Sufis or Arab traders who converted people peacefully in parts of India, Malaysia or Indonesia. Pashtuns were converted to Islam in the past but now being converted to Islamism by Taliban, Tableeghis and Deobandis.

The existence of Pashtuns prior to 1000 A.D. as a distinct and identfiable ethnic/cultural group ALSO has no historical foundation. There is no single evidence of Pashtun language or reference to Pashttuns as an ethnic group or Pashtu as a language prior to this time period. There is no academic consensus about the alleged terms that are often claimed by Pseudo-Scholars to associate Pashtuns with ancient groups the Bakhtra or Pactyun, and more evidence that none of these are connected to Pashtuns since they exhibit the hard KH dialect when the soft SHHH dialect is agreed as the ancient version of Pashto.

The Ethnogenesis of Pashtuns being controversial what we do know is this MANY Pashtuns like the Ghilzais became Muslims willingly; but there is evidence suggesting they're Turkic in origin

Where as Karlani Pashtuns were Hindus and Buddbhists who were forcefully converted, Abdali Pashtuns were Zoroastrians and Ghilzais nomadic Pashtuns who were Manicheans and Animists who accepted Islam because of contact with their Turkish Nomadic peoples who converted to Islam
