A more interesting question may be to ponder why and who
killed Abdullah Azzam ?
He was so dedicated to the Afghans in their epic struggle against the Red Army and KGB.
I believe he has been entirely UNDER-recognized by Afghans for his
contribution in getting the Arab world interested in helping Afghans.
Regarding Massoud, back to original question,
I read the account of an American Swiss journalist who was waiting
for an interview with Massoud exactly at that same time as the
2 - I think one was Tunisian? One Algerian, and based in Brussels, maybe -
Though his entire journalistic career with regard to Afghanistan has
been one long paean of praise for Massoud, and cutting down or dismissing Pashtuns - this is my observation, no one ELSE has noticed this --
his account of the events leading up to that Sept 9 2001 event
probably are as reliable as can be found.
Few other foreigners were right there on the scene in Massoud's compound.
This man said, from what I remember reading his non-memorable memoirs ! -
that's ANOTHER story --
that he attempted to draw out the 2 mysterious
supposed Belgian documentary producers.
They were reclusive and refused to open up about themselves
past bare necessities of conversation.
No one had anything to do to fill their time while awaiting a long overdue
Massoud, so this anecdote reveals how nervous these 2 were.
They probably didn't let on how
suspicious they were of anyone paying attention to them.
All the group waiting were beyond bored as the days went by.
Afghan staff who worked for Massoud played
computer games while waiting for his return, which kept being extended.
The problem was high winds which prevented his helicopter to land
coming from Tajikistan, I think it was.
Finally the narrator left without his much-wished for interview
with his hero, which he constantly terms "The Lion" in the most
adulatory way imaginable. Especially for a theoretically
impartial journalist.
It was his wife who actually saved him from near certain death.
Her birthday was Sept 16 or so, and he had promised to be back
in Europe for that.
So he took off.
But the 2 stayed on, claiming they urgently needed to see Massoud.
When Massoud finally did arrive, he had no suspicion about them.
Surely his Public Relations chief
[grandiloquently titled, "Foreign Affairs Attache" or something similar
as though Massoud were running a government ]
should have had his antennae out
and observed that these 2 were acting
extra secretive considering they were supposed to be journalists.
Most journalists fraternize a lot, and drink alcohol if any is near.
So these definitely stood out as they kept to their quarters, only seen
for meals and prayers.
Who was behind these 2 ? I doubt it was anyone usually blamed.
Perhaps Israel, the planet's primary
false flagger.
And why ? Maybe some score to settle.
The 2 Arabs may have been used by them as a cover to hid
the hand of Mossad -
