  • well, urdu is understood by majority of pakistanis already, but not well enough.

pushto is only understood by pashtuns, so why should pashtu be used? if everyone could understand pushto, then i'd agree it could be used.

Actually urdu is an imposed language on the people of the state of Pakistan. It was one of the primary grievances of bengalis...but then again they never learn. You are now arguing irrationally. It is not going to happen that Pashtuns are going to leave their language. To suggest these things is irrational, and entirely unfair. You are going to have to move on.

        • Yeah I agree it's unfair but then again, you can't build up a country without any sacrifices. but i am not being irrational here. if around 50% of the population doesn't cooperate, then please tell me how we're going to have a standard language in the country that can be used for education and work? its not possible to get a language to this point unless a large portion of the country FULLY treats it as their primary toungue, not as a secondary one. We can't continue to rely on english, we can never be as productive with it as we can be with our native language. countries like japan, s.korea, germany, china don't have to rely on english because their own language is in a position to be used for every thing.

and as i said in almost all major cities punjabi, sindhi, new generation speak urdu only, so why whats the problem with pashtuns? we can not make it without their coperation because they form a large majority now.

They are wrong examples. You can't compare Pakistan to them. Again you are wasting time by asking for such irrational demands. No one is going to sacrifice their identity, especially one for a 63 year old state. Move on and please find something else for this state to work.

            • Well, you could say that all developed countries have one thing in common. majority of the people have the same language, same culture, same customs and Not 6 major ethnic groups of these within them. I guess that says a lot for the need to have a common language, culture, customs. etc..also who said they have to sacrifice their "identity" there will be a new identity : PAKISTANI and anyone who lives here should not feel embarrassed to be known only as a PAKISTANI, not urdu speaking, punjabi, pashtun etc

GaB I can't keep on repeating the obvious. German is a thousand year old identity, japanese is even older than that. See these are natural and fluid identities that have taken years to come to shape. If you want to compare these countries you have to then split pakistan into 5-6 portions and then each of those regions can be their germany, korea, etc. Please don't speak illogically. I will tell you what, why don't you all indic speakers sacrifice your identity for Pashtun identity, that way you guys won't have an India complex anymore.

                  • well, all I can say that you have to start somewhere!
also as i told another guy a few posts back majority of pakistanis including pashtuns can already understand urdu but non-pushtuns cant understand pashtu so ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL its far harder for me to adopt pashtu than it would be for pashtuns to adopt urdu. If i was able to speak functional pashtu and if pashtu was the popular tongue in pakistan, i wouldnt have minded 1 bit to give urdu up and promote pashtu.

You are asking for a culture to be wiped out for an artificial identity. It just wont happen anymore...those days are gone. They tried with the one-unit. Concentrate on something that can happen.

You seem to speak perfect English. Maybe they should stick with English to be the professional language. It's a neutral language.

                        • Muslim and Hindu Hindustanis both have a superiority complex.

Hindustan referes to the Hindi speaking belt comprising Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other Indian states. UP folk are particularly known for thinking that they are the true India, the core, the nucleus to which the rest of India are appendages. They also say how the Hindu "gods" such as Krishna came from Uttar Pradesh.

Muslim Hindustanis wanted to create Pakistan as country with them as a ruling elite, a neo-Mughal state.

Hindu Hindustanis go to Mumbai and think they are superior and refuse to speak Marathi and think Hindi is superior.

Musim Hindustanis go to Mumbai and think they are superior and refuse to speak Sindi and think Urdu is superior.

They also did the same in the former "East Pakistan" and we all know what happened.
